  1. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 05:36 PM) Public confidence. How will that be changed by doing something with Ozzie before the World Series rather than after? And why will taking a step immediately be judged to be positive and not flailing? And why does anyone care about "Public Confidence in the White Sox" in the middle of October anyway? The only rational reason why Public Confidence in the Sox when everyone is watching the Bears would matter is if Season Ticket Renewal/purchase deadlines happen at the end of October.
  2. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 05:33 PM) I think we need a fantasy football thread. There exists an entire fantasy sports subforum already.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 05:27 PM) Excuse me, but Ozzie will have a love affair with Mr. Slappy Emilio Who knows if it'll stick...but .295 average, .361 OBP, .754 OPS, 39/50 stolen bases at age 26? That'd be one monster upgrade on Juan Pierre.
  4. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 05:22 PM) Absolutely. In the grand scheme of things, it's much more important to restore public confidence in this organization than it is to wait until November in order to acquire Emilio Bonaficio. Why?
  5. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 05:08 PM) JR needs to make this whole process as short as possible. The quicker Ozzie is either fired or traded the better it will be for the organization going forward. They need to get this done and focus on a replacement and direction for this organization. Ozzie cannot be traded for anyone on the Marlins 40 man roster until after the World Series.
  6. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 04:20 PM) this will definitely be one of the worst seasons ever Seriously, cut down on the descriptive terms. You don't need to qualify that statement.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 03:57 PM) This is the opposite of that though. Soylent Green owes the Cali Dem's money. I'm replying to the part where no one knows why they are on the list. No one knows where money has gone or come from in the California Dem Party for years now it seems.
  8. The California Democratic party's finances had a nuclear bomb go off in them about a month ago when one of their treasurers was discovered to be doing some illegal dealings. They don't have a clue how much money they actually have right now and so I'm not surprised no one has a clue where that comes from. Apparently Senator Feinstein's reelection funds have completely vanished.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 03:21 PM) If you think next year could be any worse then you have to believe that: Morel will never hit Beckham will never hit again Dunn will never go back to the form from the last 8 years Rios will never hit again Peavy will never sniff his old SD days De Aza/Vicedo will be worse than Pierre Now I don't see all those things as turning around, but I can't imagine them ALL failing again. 1 or 2 of those options going the other way and its a different season really. There's still some trouble though...you also can believe that Paul Konerko might finally start showing his age, AJ Pierzynski could have a more 2010 like season, Mark Buehrle could either not return or not have the caliber of season he just had, John Danks and Carlos Quentin could be traded, Phil Humber might not carry this team for 2 months, Santos could fail to repeat his success this year. Not all of those will happen, but a number of them are somewhat likely.
  10. QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 09:58 AM) Red Sox have to win Wild Card for that homer to give Ellsbury the MVP. AL contenders are just so thin. "Thin" is not the word I'd use to describe the AL MVP Contenders. Thin is how I'd describe them when Pedroia won. This year, if Ellsbury, Verlander, or Bautista won it...wouldn't you say that they totally deserved it?
  11. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 03:01 PM) So i just saw on Twitter than the player rep for the Bears press conference was Sanzenbacher. Way to put an undrafted free agent out there in front of the press after losing to the Packers Lovie. Can you think of any other player on the offense who had a quality game?

  13. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 02:45 PM) You've jumped the shark. You are now saying that all businesses in any field with significant regulation are obviously criminals. Seriously? When some people break the law, and the governmental response is that the rules will change in a big way but we won't tell you how yet... then ALL the people in that sector are now waiting, and waiting, and waiting. Not just the criminal few. How do you not get that? Can't I play it a little silly sometimes? And anyway...he's not wrong. Take a look at what he's saying and how it is expressing where "Moral Hazard" has gone. A lot of the big financial firms broke the law wholesale. They are now sitting there worried about indictments. This is entirely true for Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, and probably a host of others. Think about what this says for moral hazard. Charging these people with a crime that they committed quite literally creates uncertainty. He's right. If we investigate actual financial criminality, we increase uncertainty and hurt the economy. Ergo, we must ignore previous criminality for the good of the economy. And if Goldman Sachs or Bank of America are actually charged for what they did...we get another series on how Obama is so mean to wall street and its increasing uncertainty. You cannot say that this is a sustainable situation, even if I poke fun at the "Obama was mean to Wall Street" crowd with it.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 11:49 AM) He is finally swinging hard. That much is obvious. More specifically, he's looking to pull the ball. You could watch the kid learn the whole year. learned how to put the bat on the ball in April and May, started learning to take pitches as the year went on, started learning to pull the ball in August and you're getting the results now.
  15. Here's one reaction which appears to be a doctor...it's from his blog though so yeah, as usual it only counts for about 40% of the people here.
  16. I almost want to put this in the GOP 2012 thread...because this is absolutely a primary gift to Rick Perry. And I bet whoever wrote the line knew that.
  17. QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 01:18 PM) Unfortunately, Knox and Hester are either in the wrong place or don't have the hands in order to make this sort of offense work. And Cutler can't put the ball on their hands reliably enough, especially on tough routes.
  18. Usually, the talking heads on the TV take exceptional care to cover their words, and that trickles all the way down to internet message boards. They say and type things like "Obama needs to stop being mean to job creators" or "Obama shouldn't call out the job creators, that just creates uncertainty!". Then occasionally...one of them lets slip the truth. Yes that's right...the problem isn't that Obama was mean to them...it's that they broke a ****ton of laws for 10 years. But threatening to punish the "Job creators" for a decade of systematic lying and lawbreaking, why that's terrible for the economy, it creates the uncertainty over whether they might have to go to jail for a decade of systematic lawbreaking. If we want the economy to grow, we can't obsess with which laws were broken and which weren't. And I'm sure next time, they'll have learned their lesson.
  19. QUOTE (Lillian @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 10:52 AM) I didn't read all of the posts in the entire thread, so perhaps someone has already made the following suggestion: Keep Walker, and ask every underperforming, struggling hitter to use Konerko as a working model. They could all do much worse than simply copying his mechanics, with Walker as the instructor. Is there a more sound approach to hitting anywhere? It looks as though Lillibridge already has done that, after working with Walker over the winter. It would certainly represent a big improvement over Dunn's long swing, and whatever you call that abomination of Rios', earlier in the season. Biggest issue with this concept is...PK14 might be the best in baseball at recognizing the fastball early. If someone else tried to adopt his exact approach but couldn't respond as effectively to the fastball, then that other hitter might be completely worthless.
  20. Colts owner doesn't expect Manning back this season.
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 09:44 AM) But yeah....it makes sense to have one dominant company in this area that everyone looks to. Like books, you go to amazon.com or online auctions, it's e-bay, etc. Especially if you had a national corporation that really wanted to integrate itself with one of these companies. You get something that happens in an area, traffic jam or sporting event or something, suddenly all of the Olive Gardens in the Nashville area are 1/2 empty on a saturday night, you put out a coupon there in real time to make sure those seats stay full, you can't do that with a major company in real time unless you have a national option. Or, I'm traveling to Minneapolis for a conference, want to eat somewhere, no idea where to go, don't want to have to figure out what the local discount company is, etc.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 09:28 AM) His statement wasn't nearly what it has turned into in urban legend form. Where was the line where he called him an "NL-only hitter"?
  23. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 10:57 PM) Being a non-Bears, non-Packers fan, I don't think you can blame Martz either. The run simply wasn't there. They were getting stuffed. The pass was there. Cutler made some mistakes, the O-Line made some pass blocking mistakes and the WR's made mistakes. Fact of the matter is, this is a game that falls on Jerry Angelo. You didn't address the OL, CB position or WR position when you had the money to. In fact, you lied to Bears fans and said the dumbest thing I've ever heard a GM say with that much money under the cap and with as big and glaring holes as the Bears, "Who else is out there that's better?" Hell, I'm better. Anyone you would've picked up is better. By simply picking up Carimi and calling it a day on the O-Line, by simply picking up Roy and calling it a day for the WR and not even bothering to improve the CB position just baffles me. But I'm sure he'll get another DLineman soon. If you want a coaching staff to blame for this one...I think you look at the preparation. Cutler came into the game...off. He had time to throw but he was totally out of sync. His INT's came on poor throws. His WR's weren't where he expected him to be. And when he hit one or two in the hands they'd drop it. Similarly, the Packers came out and really outdid that defense which performed better against them 3 times last year. They had some big running lanes early and they weren't forcing turnovers until they were desperate. Rogers didn't really take the beating you need to deliver to him.
  24. Whether this particular company will survive...i think the business model has been firmly established, and it certainly seems like 2-3 large national firms providing those services, some in real time through apps and such, is an entirely plausible future. If nothing else, it makes a lot more sense than having 16 different companies doing it in every city (Dealchicken.com? Seriously? We get dealchicken.com?)
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 09:02 AM) I wouldn't even say he was the best coach ever, but the best manager of men. X's and O's were never his thing (he pretty much left that to Tex and the assistants), but he knew how to get into the heads of his guys and to get everyone else to play together, even nutcases like Artest and Rodman. It's also worth noting...having really good assistants who are really good at X's and O's reflects well on a manager too. As does letting them do their jobs.
