  1. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 09:35 PM) Hey White Sox, stop f***ing up your draft position. Thx. F*** that, get Mark! a win.
  2. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 09:32 PM) Baserunning as well. They put a strict emphasis on taking the extra base, etc. But not doing so foolishly, Juan Pierre style
  3. Nice running alejandro! Took a great effort to beat that throw.
  4. QUOTE (toasty @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 09:29 PM) i'll consider it progress only if it wasnt a call to say that the Sox were not intending to bring Mark back... The only way M56 isn't back is if he doesn't want to be back. If they're callig him, they're getting money talks started, and the Chairman will pay for Mark.
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 09:24 PM) What I'd like to see is some type of direct link or connection between SABR/statistical analysis and Martinez. There was the same debate in the past about Hahn. This one is all about their defense. Since 2008 they've put together the most reliable defense in the league. And they got there by going off of the modern defense numbers.
  6. Love the 56 spelled out on the chairs
  7. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 09:03 PM) ever wonder what the role of social media had in quickening the demise of guillen? I know, not a topic for the thread, but just curious. Personally I think his family became a big part of the problem and twitter was how his family got into the trouble. I think Ozzie has done acceptably with it, but Oney has constantly crossed the line.
  8. Wasn't Quade Pinellas bench coach?
  9. QUOTE (zenryan @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 07:17 PM) Anyone have Lee Corso's contact info? My sportsbook has odds on who he'll pick between Nebraska and Wisconsin. Right now Nebraska is +450. Tell him to take Nebraska for me! You're betting on a corn shaped head.
  10. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 06:20 PM) Good point. I hope he is back though, I still think that is likely to happen. I think Cooper being extended 4 years is a pretty good sign towards that happening.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 06:16 PM) Fair enough. I disagree, but I can understand that perspective. He played less years with the Red Cubs, but he started his career there, and his most famous moment (the '75 series HR) happened there as well. What I'd say is that you need to think about Fisk's meaning to the Sox. This was a moribund franchise that literally he helped revitalize. They meant more because they had Fisk. Same reason I'd give Ozzie a statue...he did what no other manager could do for that org and finished the job.
  12. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 06:04 PM) Ha, I'm an idiot. Ok, I can live with this.
  13. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 06:03 PM) It's really starting to look that way @ChrisRongey Chris Rongey There will not be a new manager by the end of the week, according to Kenny Williams #whitesox #mlb 2 minutes ago via Twitter for BlackBerry® Martinez could leave the club early even if they make the playoffs but still this makes it seem like Sandy is the guy. I have no real problem with it, I'd prefer Martinez but Sandy seems like a solid choice. At least we'll know sooner rather than later. Are you reading the "Not" in Rongey's tweet? If it was Alomar, that'd be done quick, other candidates would be reasons to wait.
  14. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 05:56 PM) ...also let me add that they're overdoing the cigarette tax, and it's starting to come to a head, due to the short-mindedness the government usually displays. They've gone to that well too many times already and the current taxes on cigarettes is at a sticking point where it's almost so high it's priced out of smokers range of affordability (hence why so many people have quit or are simply buying them from Indiana since it's like...you know, 2 minutes away)...raising it more and more every time they need money cuts off more and more revenue from what was once a very consistent stream. Eventually, it'll fall off a cliff and they'll have a new budget shortfall of quadjillions of tax dollars they're no longer getting from cigarettes...because they effectively forced everyone to quit smoking and/or go to Indiana... ...then they'll move that 4$ tax to gasoline, or liquor, or soda...or water...or whatever sells the most, because it's not really being done out of concern for our health anyway...it's done because a lot of people used to smoke. So they need to start looking elsewhere before they totally collapse the tax revenue they're getting from that well. The nice thing though is that as that revenue stream collapses, you also save a lot on health care costs from your employees, as they're not smoking, more productive, not laid up in the hospital, and not dead.
  15. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 05:35 PM) I agree with your general point. But I disagree totally with the idea that the Martz offense is quick. It's VERY precise, as precise as an offense can be. But it's not quick at all. The Martz offense is about 5 to 7 step drops and multiple receivers with an extensive series of route trees. Let me add a few more phrases/details..."Quick release" and "Quick reaction when a receiver becomes open". From the first 3 games, I have not been impressed with Cutler on those qualities.
  16. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 05:45 PM) Coop would prefer the anonymity of the Marlins to the red hot spotlight of the Yankees. Again, how do you know this? There have been reports connecting him to the Yankees for years. Hell, he gets interviewed on radio in the 3rd largest city in the country and just signed a 4 year deal to stay there.
  17. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 05:33 PM) Coop must've had a similar offer from Florida waiting. No, but he probably had one from New York if he wanted it.
  18. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 05:37 PM) Where's the Phil Jackson statue? He worked for Reinsdorf and won quite a few titles. Phil was an employee of another franchise until last year. He deserves at least what Pippen got, his bust somewhere in the UC.
  19. QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 05:20 PM) If I was KW hiring I'd be asking the candidates if they would want to retain Coop. Of course it is a trick question, I wouldn't hire someone who wanted to get rid of Coop. If you interviewed Bobby Cox and he insisted on Leo Mazzone...?
  20. QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 05:16 PM) If I was Coop, I'd turn it down until I knew who my new boss would be. Coop's supposedly quite the company man, which I'm sure helps...and frankly, I bet the Sox made it monetarily worth his while to stay.
  21. QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 05:14 PM) The new manager should have had an opportunity to at least voice his opinion. I can see why, with the track record, you'd insist on keeping Koop regardless of a manager's opinion. The other, I dunno why. Maybe the White Sox have been doing some tampering as well.
  22. QUOTE (Cali @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 05:01 PM) Import Issue: What happen's with the #13 for the White Sox? Does it get the JaMarcus Russell toxic treatment where no one gets to wear it? Or is it given away right away as a slap in the face? I know greg's answer, but retiring it right away was not one of the options I gave haha Retire it in ~5-7 years, assuming things don't completely break down due to a public airing of grievances.
  23. QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 04:46 PM) Fire Cora via text message with 2 games left in the season? Rediculous, what does it matter if he coaches these last two games honestly? And if you're going to fire someone, do it in person not through a text message. Unreal. Firing an employee is common practice when you learn that they've been negotiating or even accepted another job offer for the next year while still in your employl.
  24. QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 04:27 PM) That Ozzie had changed over recent years, the clubhouse didn't respond to the way he became, and that he thought the timing of his contract extension request a few months ago derailed any momentum the team had. FWIW my co-worker and many here have been saying this for years. I would wonder out loud how you go from WS champion to 1/2 a good year and then to corpseball, as so many here have referred to it. And he would say, as others have, that Ozzie's "style" wore off after '05--that players were tuning him out and that's the death of any team. Maybe all that loose cannon stuff was a novelty in '04/'05, but clearly the team was not responding to him. To hear HAWK of all people blurt that out just confirms it. And Paulie, in the locker room last night, he did not seem one IOTA regretful that Ozzie was gone. I thought that was deafening, that reaction. I'll say it here since this isn't the appreciation thread. I think what changed with Ozzie is that he stopped being "Chicago tough", to use his words, and I think it really started when his kids started getting more involved. For the past couple years, if you listened to the actual words coming out of his mouth, he was constantly harping on people for criticizing him. You could tell, it was getting to him in a way that I don't remember happening in say, 2007. And Ozzie's reaction to this was to start more and more trying to do things that proved he was right and everyone else was wrong. His decisions got more extreme, high risk "See I'm right" kinda moves, he became more and more intent on covering for his guys, and he became much less willing to cover for everyone else outside. I think it was his kids getting involved that really snapped it for him, personally. Suddenly people weren't just criticizing him, they were criticizing his family. It went from being a job to being personal. And since his kids were, let's say, involved with some of the players in certain ways, criticism of the preparation of those players became criticism of his kids. So he covered for those players and left everyone else feeling like they didn't matter.
