  1. QUOTE (hi8is @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 09:17 PM) And he continues to ignore my questions - for the last 48 hours I've been asking him WHY the brewers would EVER WANT rios. He says nothing. If the sox were picking up a large share of the contract it might be worth a risk. If I went back and bumped the original rios thread here I'm sure most people though hed recover to his earlier success.
  2. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 08:51 PM) Well it's not his creationist position on evolution but that he's got some "god made it perfect" position on the climate. It's an ideological pledge that man cannot cause climate change, period. It really calls into question any supposed objectivity in his work. That doesn't on principle mean he has to be wrong though. Especially if the paper(s) passed a legit peer review (again, I don't know the journal and couldn't get there earlier)
  3. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 09:15 PM) You got it. I think TCQ may have played his last game for the Sox... I doubt he's gone before tomorrow. Kenny can play brinksmanship here.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 08:44 PM) The guy's previous work has been taken apart pretty thoroughly: http://geotest.tamu.edu/userfiles/216/dessler10b.pdf http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archi...e-easy-lessons/ my favorite is this signed declaration by spencer: "We believe Earth and its ecosystems — created by God’s intelligent design and infinite power and sustained by His faithful providence — are robust, resilient, self-regulating, and self-correcting, admirably suited for human flourishing, and displaying His glory. Earth's climate system is no exception." I was trying to avoid going after him personally and just stick to what I could get of the science. Yeah, the creationist stuff did bother me a bit.
  5. QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 08:39 PM) I'm thinking all of this chatter is just KW trying to drum up demand. KW is trying to play teams off of each other in the media to see if some GM is dumb enough to give up their top prospect for Quentin. I doubt Q is traded. If he's trying to drum up demand, that means the guy is available for the right price.
  6. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 08:38 PM) Maybe they feel he can play 3B or SS? Or perhaps they feel Weeks is playing himself right out of an affordable contract? Silly to dismiss. Beckham would be a big upgrade for them at 3b.
  7. If Ozzie believes in this team he should stop gift wrapping games to the rest of the league.
  8. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 06:54 PM) I'm assuming Dayan's thumb injury isn't too bad...? They never put him on the DL.
  9. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 06:51 PM) Uh, did you see Steve Smith's stats last year? I'll help you out: Bennett, Knox and Hester all had better years. Uh, did you see Carolina's QB situation last year?
  10. Safe to say that after a full day of whipping the GOP in the House doesn't have the votes if they're delaying the scheduled vote. This would be great to be a fly on the wall. They're probably close, which means they need to offer some Rep/couple Reps the Moon to get them to agree to vote for the thing.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 06:00 PM) Or he could have been the next Sandy Kofax If Frank's career had ended at the end of 1999, he'd have left with 301 HR and a 1.013 OPS, 2 MVP's but only with 6 seasons of an OPS above 1.000 in an "offensive" era. He'd be no where close to 500 HR's, 81 fewer than Jim Rice. His last 2 seasons would have had sub-.900 OPS's. Some people might bring him up because of how great his top 3-4 seasons were, but I don't think he ensured himself a spot until he got to 500 HR's and the steroid thing blew up, putting him in an even better light.

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 05:22 PM) Maybe, but I'd say more like just the last few years, after he broke his foot in '04. He had suffered foot problems before that, but Frank was a DH mainly because he was BAD First Baseman and the White Sox acquired a pretty good one in 1999. He was a pretty tough guy and at one point had a consecutive game streak second only to Ripken. I think he could have and would have found playing time at 1B longer, if there was no DH. There's another thing to think about though...Thomas started having health problems fairly early in his career, right? 2000 was a "return to health form" season, then he tore something up pretty bad in 2001. If he had to play 1b, it's hard to figure out how he would have stayed healthy long enough to put up the career numbers that got him to the HOF. He might well have been an incredible 5 year stretch guy who started getting hurt because of his insane body type and never returned to form.
  13. Doesn't one of these deals eventually have to backfire for them and destroy that franchise?
  14. QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 04:40 PM) Sounds like someone KW would trade for these days. OTOH, I think KW has to ask for Teheran, and not budge. If they won't trade him, go elsewhere. See if Philly will part with Dom Brown, or Boston will part with top pitching. If the market is there, you have to get top talent for Quentin. The Bravos are much more likely to be willing to do a 3 or 4 player for 1 swap than they are to give up their top guy. We've seen exactly that before, they gave up Andrus, Feliz, Matt "Hawk Harrelson adores me" Harrison, Saltalamaccia, and some dude named Beau Jones to get Teixeira as a 1.5 year rental...but they absolutely refused to part with Tommy Hanson, when Hanson alone might well have gotten that deal done.
  15. QUOTE (SpainSOXfan09 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 04:39 PM) Honestly I wouldn't put it past KW to try and peddle off Rios with either Danks or CQ. It is probably the only way teams will even listen, but we gotta lower the demand and eat some salary. Even if we have to cut back to $100 million next year, I'd still say we're better off taking the talent and keeping the poorly performing guys. We've got a $100 million salary, if we've got a ton of young talent, we can eat that as an expense.
  16. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 04:33 PM) JR wins the Powerball two times prior to the 2012 season. And he already won Derrick Rose...so that means he'd have to win 3 lotteries.
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 04:32 PM) You're likely right. What are the odds that we'd be in a situation that would prove him wrong? We'd have to move a ton of salary to be in that position.
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 04:31 PM) Well, is the 12 inch sub cheaper than getting two 6 inch subs? Somehow this post disturbs me.
  19. QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 04:29 PM) Since things have gotten really funny in here...I figured I'd pass on a little story you guys may like. I just had to post it somewhere: I was at Sheetz (gas station/store) earlier today getting some lunch...And there was some guy there ordering a sub/s. They had big signs showing different types of 6 inch subs and 12 inch subs. I'm standing there and the guy asks the cook/server could he get a 12 inch sub and make each half different. I nearly asked for his autograph. The 12" sub is probably cheaper than 2 6" subs.
  20. At least we wouldn't have to hear about how bad Mitchell was any more, and I could start being angry about us having traded him away.
  21. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 03:34 PM) That's a lot of money, but it's damn near impossible to win without a QB nowadays. If you think he's the guy, sometimes you gotta take a chance. Derek Anderson is just awful, who knows about Max Hall. On top of that, Arizona is a team that still has some legitimacy to it, with Fitzgerald on the outside. Their defense was awful last year, but in the NFC west, an 8-8 team going to the playoffs would be an improvement.
  22. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 04:10 PM) Do you think after Jackson getting traded the team would keep its starters intact now? Especially if we are still "all in" I think it depends on the offer. John Danks would be by far the best pitcher, and probably the best player on the market this year. If someone offered you a similar level deal to what the M's got for Lee, wouldn't you almost have to do so?
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 04:11 PM) Hell no to Chone. His numbers are horrific this season. I'd rather just have Rios rot on the bench than to watch Ozzie give him 600 at bats. That's a good point. He would play no matter what.
  24. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 04:05 PM) There's simply way too many connections. Martz and Marinelli were in Detroit for his best years, plus, I believe Drake and Williams have some college connections. I wouldn't mind it for the right price. Hopefully Martz could re-ignite the spark. I can't imagine any other team would offer him all that much.
  25. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 04:01 PM) So if they need a hitter why are they possibly willing to deal Brown? Because he's still a kid and has only put up a .749 OPS this year. Quentin would be an immediate bat upgrade, and if you look at that lineup, it is missing RH power after Werth left.
