  1. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 07:20 PM) The thing with the offense is that it has no OL. Tice can only do so much. Should they run more? Maybe. You can certainly make a case, but there's only oh so much you can do other than calling plays up the gut. They can't swing a run to the outside because their OL can barely block their current positions, much less on the move. In reality, until Angelo respects the OLine, any offense is going to stink. Honestly, Martz's offense gives me reason to watch the Bears. There are ways to break a pass rush's tempo though that I haven't gotten the impression the Bears have tried. When you've got a heavy pass rush hitting Brees or manning, they shift into 3 step drops and hammer you west-coast-offense style with high percentage 8 yard completions, and then they mix it up with draw plays and quick screens where the pass rushers overpursue. Martz wants to go down the field and damn the consequences.
  2. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 09:43 PM) 3/4 starter. U can't possibly think he's a 2 at this point. And he's not worth no 12 million. In the NL? Mark is a #2 starter easily. Probably 1/2 the teams in the NL he'd be their obvious best starter.
  3. LaRussa has agreed to return to the Cardinals for next season.
  4. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 07:37 PM) Good move? It'd be a f***ing great move. Problem is why on earth would the Cards trade a cheap, under control, budding all-star for a #4 starter who'll be 32 by the time next season starts making 12 million and a solid but hardly elite prospect? It would no doubt take danks. And I wouldn't have a problem with that if our Gm hadn't sucked the life out of our farm with s*** to show for it the last 3 years. The Cardinals clearly look like they're moving Rasmus this year because he doesn't fit with their team and manager. Mark Buehrle is not a #4 starter in the AL, and he's especially not one in the NL. You have a really odd idea of all these teams having #4 starters with ERA's around 4 and 200+ innings in the AL. The reason the Cardinals wouldn't do it is that they probably can't take on his salary and also have Wainright's money go up and pay Holliday and find another $10 million+ per year for Albert starting in 2012.
  5. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 07:39 PM) False. That would be Adrian Gonzalez. But I get where you're coming from. Really, you don't think we can come up with others who are at least pre-arb? Evan Longoria and his $950k salary this year? David Price and his $1.8 million? Joey Votto for $525k?
  6. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 01:57 PM) The worst case scenario is trying to replace him with 2 cheap guys like they did for the DH. I think he'll be on the team next year. Depends on what we mean by "2 cheap guys". Viciedo, for example, will be kind of cheap next year.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 04:21 PM) Can I just say for legals sake that it was all made up? Do you really think the government will care? This is the government, after all.
  8. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 05:44 PM) More from looney Joe: At least we know he's not a fan of American Citizens fleeing to Mexico and we'll finally get some efforts to stopping that.
  9. There are 3 White Sox players up for "This year in baseball" fan voting awards from MLB.com. Exactly 1 should win. Among hitters: Paul Konerko Among Setup Men: Matt Thornton And play of the year (winner): Mark Buehrle.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 03:08 PM) I doubt they would benefit from a new ballpark. If fans aren't willing to go see them because of the ballpark, they aren't really very good fans in the first place. Really? How many franchises have we seen significantly boosted by a new ballpark?
  11. Aww, you jumped in before me and I had a good one involving the word "Zygote" on that.
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 02:48 PM) And yet, Tampa can't draw. If I were to make a list of the teams most likely to move cities, they'd be at the top. And if they can go somewhere and get some actual crowds, their model may change. I'm torn on that one. Clearly they'd benefit from a new city, but they'd also benefit from a new ballpark in that city. OTOH, neither of those seem to be happening any time in the near future, since it's not exactly a good time for cities to be off bidding for franchises.
  13. Grabbing a Bill Simmons blurb on Anthony/Bulls:
  14. QUOTE (Disco72 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 02:39 PM) I agree on TB but think they are more likely the exception that proves the rule. They built 'cheaply' by losing and developing draft picks, and they've been able to stay with a lower payroll by continuing to develop drafted talent. It will be curious to see how long that continues, especially because of their inability to increase payroll due to attendance issues. There's obviously going to be a limit to what the Rays can do and eventually they're either going to have to trade off a guy or two for a haul or fall back, but there's every reason to believe that they have at least a couple more years, at least with the pitching staff. The other side though is...the Rays aren't the only team who has kept losing, and yet they're the only one who has legitimately taken that losing and turned it into a period of winning. The Pirates, Royals, Orioles, etc., have had long periods of losing, but they haven't done nearly as well.
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 02:28 PM) No way to tell for sure. Seems like the kind of situation that could be a lot of things. Hopefully someone can come up with a video of it.
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 02:25 PM) I don't remember that. But in this case, it sounds like the reporter also shoved the security guard, so there is probably more to the story than just overzealous security guards. The initial story basically suggested that the security guards made physical contact with him first.
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 02:22 PM) Plus they arrested this reporter in a public school. The fact that it's a public school doesn't matter as much as the fact that it was a "public event". You can have a private event in a public school.
  18. Continuing the parade of fun in this thread...guess who will be dropping by "Mythbusters" this December?
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 02:19 PM) I guess the rest of the reporters didn't threaten to beat him up like they did the guy trying to question Rahm. Without commenting on the appropriateness of the behavior described in your post...would you agree that privately-employed security guards should have some level of legal standard that they live up to?
  20. QUOTE (Disco72 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 02:11 PM) I think it would be more accurate to say that you can become a winning team with a lower payroll, but you need a higher payroll to keep winning. Depends on how long you're talking about. The Rays have been at least a winning team for 3 years with fairly low payroll, and there's plenty of reason to think they have more on the way. They lose Crawford this year but have Desmond Jennings lined up next. They still have more pitchers than they know what to do with.
  21. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 01:59 PM) Just as weird. I can't remember though, honestly, did he say that? Or did someone else call him that? I don't think he ever called himself that. He was originally dubbed that in 1998 by Toni Morrison, writing in the New Yorker.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 01:52 PM) Bill Clinton has been called the first black President. I am guessing that goes into the same category. Except...no one ever called her that.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 01:53 PM) Virtually nothing is impossible if you are the most powerful. We could probably come up with a long list of alphabetically ordered impossible things if we really tried.
  24. That's, that's a pretty good one.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 01:20 PM) The types of injuries are the centerpoint. We are talking about major shoulder and elbow problems versus ankle problems from running the bases and a freak muscle injury which happened after he got here, so it had no affect on the thought process of trading for Peavy. Even still, I think in the back of a lot of people's minds, Peavy was something of an injury risk in terms of his arm motion. Just like Sale. Awkward motion that some people thought would cause problems down the road. Awkward enough that Cooper was trying to get him to tinker with it to start this season, if you remember.
