  1. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 4, 2010 -> 03:15 AM) Keith, this is gaining more and more steam in the midwest in areas of Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc. Basically, it was not economically feasible unless you were separated from natural gas service and had to rely on propane for heat. But with the costs of energy rising, it is becoming more and more a viable alternative, especially in large commercial/government/municipal buildings such as schools, hospitals, military bases, etc. If we're talking about price comparisons with natural gas, I should note from the geologist side that there is good reason to think natural gas prices will actually stabilize over the next decade compared to the wild swings in the last decade due to production from "unconventional" natural gas well sites.
  2. I should also add...holy F***, some time in the last 2 hours ESPN redid their MLB stats/splits pages.
  3. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 06:43 PM) who pitched better the last month? Their ERA's and WHIP are nearly identical in May. 4.76/4.79 ERA, 1.52/1.49 WHIP (Garcia then Danks). D1 pitched more innings, gave up only 2 HR while Garcia gave up 5, D1 walked more and struck out more hitters. The only difference is Garcia went 4-1 while D1 went 1-4. And I'm going to hurt you if you try to blame that on D1. I call it a draw. By the who pitched better in May standard, Mark Buehrle actually put up a 4.03 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in May.
  4. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 06:44 PM) I would really like the Thibodeau hire in a vaacum. But this summer, the only vaacum a hire occurs in is the "what does it mean in the LeBron sweepstakes" one, and that we don't know. I almost hesitate to say this, but I actually feel like I'd rather wind up with a very good coach and scheme rather than a crappy, Lebron-approved coach and scheme. If he wants to come to Chicago, no more of this "Lebron's people run the team" crap that Cleveland's been running out there the last few years to try to make him happy.
  5. QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 06:49 PM) Is there something wrong with the guys that just wanted to play for a little excercise and to see how well they can do? Hippy.
  6. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 05:40 PM) our best pitcher takes the mound tonight. And no, I did not mean to put that in green. D1: the pitching Danks disagrees.
  7. "And arise, Sir Patrick Stewart..."
  8. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 12:31 PM) NASA faking the moon landing is another consipiracy that should be added to the list. Bah, we already had a thread on that one recently
  9. Grady Sizemore may wind up having the infamous microfracture surgery.
  10. The NYT has acquired/rented Nate Silver.
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 03:42 PM) this is just such nonsense. I'm surprised we're arguing over it too.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ May 31, 2010 -> 09:34 PM) G. Jones is a solid player
  13. There is something surprising about this game's pitching matchup. Milwaukee at Florida 7:10 PM Capuano vs Johnson
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 03:11 PM) If you are still looking for work, BP would like to talk to you about being a lawyer... Are you kidding? He's in the prosecutor role right there. You guys are the ones in the defense.
  15. One of the dead was a U.S. citizen.
  16. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 02:29 PM) I disagree that he doesn't need one. Jordan and Kobe perfected it because eventually the legs give out and you can't just beat guys off the dribble. He should be working on that skill now so in 5-6 years he'll be ready for it. Right now his game is simply to shoot long jump shots, threes, and drive the basketball. That's fine, and clearly it works well for him, but he could be THAT much better if he developed an all around game. But that's exactly the problem. Whereas guys like Jordan and Kobe wanted to be the best at everything, always, Lebron seems to be satisfied with settling a bit. The other thing that not having a post game does is it takes away a potential advantage that he could exploit right now. There isn't a small forward in the league that he isn't stronger than, and there isn't a power forward/C in the league he's not faster than down low. Paul Pierce didn't do jack squat the entire Cleveland series even when Lebron had bad games, because he was either exhausted or on the bench in foul trouble. There's no good reason why he couldn't have done the exact same thing to Garnett down low and put their entire front line on the bench. And, if you can draw the defense down low, you open out the outside for your other slashers/shooters even more.
  17. NCAR simulations.
  18. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 01:46 PM) He lacks a post game because he just doesn't need one. Yes, he does.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 12:12 PM) It is even funnier that they are now stealing credit for the bankruptcy idea when originally it was the worst thing ever because it was going to lead to the destruction of the entire industry and how many million jobs was it? You're smart enough to know that there are different types of bankruptcies and that if GM had gone in there its doors would have closed. GMAFB.
  20. QUOTE (docsox24 @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 11:27 AM) jones cant really hit either. all he does is swing for 500 ft bombs That's worked for him for most of his career.
  21. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 10:47 AM) Maybe, but his limited NTC and 10/5 rights (next year?) could severely limit the number of teams in the running. Let's say that the Dodgers, Mets, and Braves all offer really nice packages of prospects for Mark, but Mark rejects trades to those teams. Then a team like the Cardinals (who already know that Mark will accept a trade there) can step in and offer a lot less for him. You don't have to trade him if another team won't meet your price.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 10:36 AM) Interesting how much credit Toyota gets in there... Thanks in no small part to some heavy incentives, the dent in Toyota sales from the recalls as far as I can tell seems to have been surprisingly small; much smaller than the dent due to the economic collapse
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 10:30 AM) You cannot associate the frequency of a black swan event, over a very short period, with any sort of trend. If over 5 or 10 years, you start seeing a big increase in no-hitters and perfect games, then maybe its meaningful. But to look at the 19th, 20th, and maybe 21st events of something happening in about a MILLION games played, and try to draw any sort of conclusion from it, just isn't meaningful. Still...after 4-5 occurrences of a formerly 1/year or 1/5 year event within the space of less than a year, you can't rule out the possibility that there's been a fundamental shift in the probability of that event happening.
  24. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 10:28 AM) Not to mention that thousands of people SAW the first plane hit, and millions saw the the second one hit. I don't think the conspiracy denies that the buildings were hit by planes, but instead denies that the plane impacts were why the buildings went down; especially with building 7, which didn't collapse until later in the day.
