  1. Democrats respond to Arizona law with an immigration proposal including an electronic nationally required ID card that would be required for everyone applying for a job. I'm sure the people who defended the Arizona law will be bullish on this proposal. BTW...whoever's writing the Democrat's acronyms lately deserves a promotion.
  2. So, I think that stat is wrong at least how its phrased. Paul Konerko has 18 RBI, the Sox have scored 88 runs. That means Konerko has driven in 20.4% of our runs. He has a larger percentage of our RBI, however. The Tigers have 100 RBI and Miguel Cabrera has 25 of them, so he has to be the one PK14 is "Behind", but the Tigers have also scored 110 runs, so when you do the math that way, they're both basically at 22.7% of the team's total runs scored.
  3. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 10:46 AM) I'm just saying they designed the system against what Obama just said. They wanted free reign to do whatever they wanted to do. They were tired of being forced to give back portions of their earnings. They were all businessman, and I guarantee you most of them would take issue with the fact that a President told them they made too much money and had a responsibility to give some of it back. And when a group of businessmen objected to the federal government's placing a tax on Whiskey...we had President Washington putting down a revolution using the army.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 10:35 AM) That actually makes it clearer in my mind that he has no belief in the rights of the individual. It's scary how far you guys are willing to go to defend the rights of a few people to ruin the lives of everyone else.
  5. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 10:34 AM) No, they didn't. They gave power to people with money and land. They designed the system so that small groups of elite could always control what was going on to protect themselves from government. They gave power to individual states to decide what worked best for them. That's why I said yesterday they'd be spinning in their graves if they knew how much government invaded everyones lives today. So, basically, your argument is that the real mistake we've made was taking power out of the hands of small groups of elites and giving it to the masses. Anyway...you're right to some extent but you're wrong to another...yes they tried to restrict voting to landowners...but they could easily have made things much, much more restrictive to protect their own influence and power. That was not done. And unless you'd like to argue against the 14th amendment, the trend from there has been to try to move power away from the elites by legislation/amendment (although there are steps taken the other way, like Citizens United)
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 10:27 AM) But now the season has started, and I think that changes the picture a lot. If TCQ has a real injury of some kind, I say you call up Dye and offer him 550k pro-rated, and a slot in the OF/Dh rotation, if/when he can pass physical, and do a few minor league games to get up to speed. If he is unwilling to sign under those conditions, fine, see ya. If he is, great, we have another option. The last "Nationals make offer to Dye" thread was posted on April 13th, 1.5 weeks into the season.
  7. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 10:28 AM) The country wouldn't exist if this thinking was prevelant when it started. All the founding fathers were some ubber rich mother f***ers that were pissed because big government was trying to take that away from. Interesting how back then it was a horrible thing, but now it's a good thing. And then...they set up a system that gave a disturbing amount of power to the masses.
  8. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 10:24 AM) If TCQ goes to the DL, or any of the OF/DH rotation guys appear to have an injury, then I'd be for it, if its a cheap deal (like the Jones deal). Otherwise, no. And considering he's already turned down what, $3-$4 million for the year from the Nats...
  9. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 10:10 AM) Anyone have thoughts on the Dye article in the Sun Times today? "Where would he play?" seems appropriate. It burns...
  10. The question I'd then ask next, evil communist that I am is...is it a good thing or a bad thing for the rest of the economy if people keep making money past the point that they'll never be able to spend it? If the current market setup was actually allocating funds efficiently, you might be able to give me a coherent argument that it's not a problem because even then those funds will be re-invested and continue creating jobs. Right now though...you're going to have a whole lot of issues arguing that one...because of how many vacant, collapsing, unsold houses that this country is sitting on.
  11. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 10:13 AM) What's another meaning you can take from what he said? 2k5 interpreted it as saying that "you should only be able to make so much money". The key word there to me is "Should" which stresses that 2k5 believes Obama is suggesting there's a limit to what should be allowable. Another obvious interpretation is...at some point, you've made so much money that another few hundred million makes no difference to your lifestyle and you'd never notice the difference or be able to spend it.
  12. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 09:20 AM) It's nice when you can charge WHATEVER YOU WANT PER HOUR and call it "labor costs", when in reality it'll be fines. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 08:43 AM) What's much, much, much more likely is that any fines or settlements get hung up in court for 20 years, and eventually get stripped down to virtually nothing by some combination of a pro-business supreme court and the next "Drill baby drill" congress Wonder where I got that idea.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 09:35 AM) Read the statement again. He pretty clearly stated he believes that people should only be able to make so much money, and they should be forced to give their own time and efforts to things they aren't obligated to. And you guys accuse me of taking things out of context.
  14. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 09:15 AM) Right, but almost all of New England hates them, a third of the NY metro area hates them and a good portion of the rest of the country hates them. Any list that doesn't have them and the Red Sox at 1-2 (or 2-1) is a flawed list IMO. There's 2 ways to do the questioning though...it could be Amount that like them minus the amount that h ate them, or it could be total raw amount that hate them. IF you do the former...you're going to possibly get teams like the Astros or Indians up near the top...because, thanks to repeated dismantlings and poor management...their hometown people don't like them.
  15. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 09:18 AM) f*** that. Cold Stone Creamery is awesome and I will now eat 1500x more than I did before to make up for any lost business they incur. All part of our insidious plan to remove as many Republican voters as possible...
  16. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 09:16 AM) Ok, this thread may have existed, and there would have been three people in it. Again, I repeat, the world is MUCH more environmentally aware than it was 10 years ago. For you to even try to pretend otherwise is ridiculous. That I'll grant you. But it's not like Prince William Sound wasn't big. I was what, 8, and I remember hearing about that on the news. That's like 1 of 2 news stories from that decade I can clearly remember. Maybe 3, counting Noriega. Besides...whether or not "Obama" may want BP to pay through the nose...there's very little he can do directly to make it happen aside from EPA fines...but if they didn't break any rules, then it will be up to a court to get them. For all we know they may have followed every rule/requirement to the letter. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they did, given that we've just spent 8 years dismantling as many rules as we could.
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 09:13 AM) I agree. Sort of the same thinking with having Lucy replace Castro, instead of Flowers. That said, I doubt this is a DL trip for TCQ.
  18. Really, this thread wouldn't have existed 10 years ago? You and I have different memories of 10 years ago. Hell, Kyoto was 1998.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 09:16 PM) No joke. Any list that doesn't start with the Yankees is garbage. The difference with the Yankees is probably that there are a lot of people who like them.
  20. QUOTE (hogan873 @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 09:05 AM) I don't think I know anything about Gartrell. How did he perform in ST? 5/18 with 3 doubles in A games.
  21. Anyone who thinks the Rays will keep up a .773 winning percentage for the full year is a fool. That said...they're pretty darn good.
