NATO should not do this unless there is an attack by Russian forces on NATO forces somewhere or there is a resolution supporting military action by someone like the UN. Since Russia has a UN Security Council veto, the security council authorizing such military action is unlikely. NATO should not join in a war against Russia directly without specific cause. NATO should not be the aggressors. If we think this is Bloody, marching to Moscow and conducting regime change there would be monstrous.

Both sides could have accepted the others offer on face but it would have stung. An appropriate negotiation should work exactly like that. You submit your ideal offer…and find a compromise that neither side loves but they both accept. Maybe without a 43 day delay, but that’s unimportant. There was about a 1.5 week period where the players weren’t moving on anything prior to yesterday, but outside of that, the players have consistently shown a willingness to compromise on their original offer while the owners have shown no willingness to do so, and that is why we will be missing opening day.

A mediator could have been useful right now, because they are legitimately at an impasse, if there were time. It was not appropriate when it was asked for previously. Since one side called for a mediator, each side has tweaked their offer multiple times. There was clearly plenty of work that could be done without a mediator at that time, calling for a mediator at that time was a way to try to avoid having to do that work. Had they gotten to this point a month ago after having gone through about 10 versions of their main proposals, a mediator could have possibly been useful in breaking this stalemate. Now, mediation under a 3 day deadline might not do much. Its a good thing neither side wasted a month and a half, because if one side did, they single-handedly ruined any chance of mediation helping.
