The Economy, stupid
Chart(s) of the day...how this dropoff compares to the 30's. Normalized to 100 at the start of the recession. Figure 1. World Industrial Output, Now vs Then Figure 2. World Stock Markets, Now vs Then Figure 3. The Volume of World Trade, Now vs Then If you want to understand why it's important to take stimulative measures now, there's your answer. The good news is that at least a handful of people seem to have a better understanding of monetary and fiscal policy than was available in 1930-1931 when things were really contracting and when the response of the government was to allow the money supply to contract so that things could spiral even farther downwards. Figure 5. Money Supplies, 19 Countries, Now vs Then All of the x axes are time in months/years after the peak.

Iowa SC legalizes Same Sex Marriage in Unanimous Decision
QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 12:24 PM) Holy s*** this is like a stack of dominoes. Who's next? To answer your question...Silver does some simple numbers with the declining %ages of evangelical whites in each state and comes up with a list of when each state will be unable to get 50%+ votes for a gay marriage ban.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 02:01 PM) and on Getz, given it has only been one game, but I still don't think it's unreasonable (and perhaps it's very reasonable) that someone will have to move, either to a new position or organization, because Getz is that good. And the players I'm speaking of specifically are Beckham and Alexei. Beckham for Halladay later this year. You heard it here first.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 01:58 PM) Yeah, I probably get the majority of things wrong around here, but I am confident that my longstanding faith in Chris Getz is one of the few things that will prove to be accurate. He's just a solid player. He's the kind of guy we really needed to come up with.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 01:57 PM) Meh, the alternative was letting Wise hit again. What was more likely...the Royals making an error or bobbling a ball so that Dye could score, or Wise getting a hit with 2 outs?

Lineup
QUOTE (sweatpants @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 01:39 PM) Instead of taking shots at Wise maybe we should be taking shots at the general manager for not finding a better option. Is it really Wise's fault he is on this team? He's a .214 career hitter, what do you expect. Still don't have a problem with giving him a shot as a platoon player given how he hit last season and in ST. Just don't want him hitting leadoff.

Special thread dedicated to shots at Wise
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 01:35 PM) I can't believe Guillen left Wise out there in the bottom of the 9th on defense. Yes you can. And you know you can.

Official Opening Day Post Game Thread
QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 01:40 PM) I was more concerned with Buehrle struggling against the Royals and Wise stinking it up of course as well as a terrible approach by AJ at the plate with the bases juiced. He tried to pull a ball that if he went away with it, he would've been able to leg out a triple. Buehrle had an off day, his control wasn't there very much and the umps squeezed him quite a bit. He doggedly got through 5 innings and kept the Royals to 2 runs. A lot of guys haven't had their good stuff on day one of this season. How many of them only gave up 2?
