  1. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 28, 2008 -> 10:06 AM) i dont know... it's a hard situation to be in. does the guy have a family he needs to support? if so then he's got to worry about how losing his job would affect them. it's hard to ask someone to give up their job for any reason, even one as deplorable as this. i just wouldn't go so far as to call him an asshole. So...if Scotty had resigned in protest...do you think his book deal might have been worth a bit more? How much more would he have pulled in on the lecture circuit? Once you get to a position like the one he got in to...you're set for years no matter what decision you make. If he resigns, he's a hero of one side and his book deal is worth a fortune. If he stays on the job, he keeps raking in a solid salary and eventually winds up working for one of the party's business allies or as a lobbyist. Pick who's back you'll scratch and they'll scratch yours back.
  2. If you find it offensive and terrorist supporting that they ran this ad, then don't go to Dunkin' Donuts. If you find it offensive that they caved in to pressure over an issue that you find stupid, then don't go to Dunkin' Donuts. I know I won't be. (That's because I don't like donuts and there's not one near me that I know of, not because I care about this).
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 28, 2008 -> 09:36 AM) With a 100 pitch count limit, and Thome leading off, I imagine we will be seeing Perez to start the 6th. 4 innings against Cleveland's "2nd worst ERA in the bigs" bullpen is not a bad thing.
  4. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 28, 2008 -> 09:30 AM) carlos coming back to earth methinks Seriously? He has 1 or 2 bad games and he's coming back to earth?
  5. QUOTE (Brian @ May 28, 2008 -> 10:27 AM) RBI Fielders choice. 2-2, runners in scoring position. They should walk Q. They probably ought to walk Q but won't, not with Dye after him.
  6. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ May 28, 2008 -> 10:25 AM) Hall and Ramirez look like different players from early April. With a youngin' (hopefully) like Alexei, that's to be expected. With a person coming off a serious injury like Hall, it's not surprising, but not unexpected eitehr.
  7. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 28, 2008 -> 10:17 AM) I still Uribe has value since he can sub at 3B, SS, & 2B and play tremendous defense at all three positions. Plus, I think at some point this season the Sox could probably move Juan to a team (not really for anything, but at least they would get someone to pay the contract) needing some defensive assistant up the middle. That said, when Juan comes up he can just replace the spot Alexi had on the bench (its not like Pablo has to be released either, unless the Sox plan on bringing someone else up and I don't see who down in AAA is worthy of coming up; the only exception would be Fields and he isn't coming up until Konerko goes on the DL). If people wanted a lefty bat off the bench, then either Owens or Wise might be another option, if you were to drop Pablo and treat Uribe as the super-IF-Sub.
  8. Here's my problem with that definition though...I don't believe it. I don't believe that in all cases they only look at 2 years, and even when they do they're screwed up. I'll give you some examples, IIRC ARod was not the highest ranked 3rd baseman in the AL last year by their scheme, despite a dominant season. And Eric Gagne wound up being a type A FA when he left the dodgers despite having pitched like 10 innings in 2 seasons.
  9. QUOTE (SoxWS08 @ May 28, 2008 -> 10:14 AM) The Alexei is really coming along. I think it's time to DFA Uribe. OC needs to get him over now. One potential other way to do it would be to DFA Pablo and consider Uribe to be your super-sub/backup 3rd basemen when he comes back.
  10. Stop trying to bunt with OC! Either he forgot how to do it or he's adamant that he's going to screw it up every time.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 28, 2008 -> 07:46 AM) They all make mistakes while speaking publicly. None of the things CK listed really matter in the grand scheme of things. They're just a few miss-statements out of hundreds of hours of public speaking. Here's what would trouble me on any of these...if you keep making them, and then start acting like you actually think that way. If you make a mistake once, then fine, it's a mistake (example, roughly 50% of the things the President says). If you make a mistake repeatedly, then it's no longer a slip-up, it's not that you're tired, either you're lying or you misremember (example; Hillary's Bosnia Sniper fire deal). The potentially worst one is if you keep making a mistake that actually might effect policy matters (i.e. If McCain really doesn't understand the Sunni/Shi'a divide and just thinks that they're all Muslims so they all work together and all hate us), then that's about as bad as it could get.
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 28, 2008 -> 07:02 AM) Probably. When I say "in play", I mean that an Obama/Bayh ticket makes it close in IN. Probably not a win, but a race nonetheless, and the outside chance of a win. Bayh may also help with OH. There are much better VP options if you're focused on picking up Ohio.
  13. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 28, 2008 -> 08:55 AM) Depending on the extent, yes. Seems to me, at least from the reading I have done, that most people that weren't in the inner circle were told things that made it all seem logical, even if it was some seriously poor judgement. Now, one could say that people like McClellan may have intentionally turned a blind eye, just going on what they were given - probably true. I'm not saying he's golden on this, but, I think his sins pale in comparison to the decision makers. To paraphrase a quote from the captain of the Enterprise..."the phrase 'I was only following orders' has been used to gloss over too many tragedies in our history".
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 28, 2008 -> 04:46 AM) The thing that bugs me about Ramirez is that he really seems to have a low baseball IQ. The thing that bugs me is that he'll go from making a very smart play, like pulling back the bat on a bunt and singling over the head of the drawn in infield, to making a dumb play the next day, like not counting the number of outs.
  15. Probably Wise's last chance to show anything today. Hopefully he doesn't turn out to be Mackowiak in CF. Give em Hell, Gavin.
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 28, 2008 -> 07:11 AM) If Konerko is DL'd, since I'm pretty sure we're not playing Thome at 1B except in interleague, the only real 1B on the team to back him up is Swish. Playing Swish there and Anderson in CF isn't a bad idea either, but picking up Hatteberg or Eldred may be equally useful. And I forgot to add earlier, Eldred can just be called up then sent back down - Hatteberg needs to be signed to a contract, and may not have any options left. Playing Swish at 1b and Anderson in CF is probably actually a preferable option in my eyes. But here's the kicker...if you go that route, you have no backup 1b on the roster. Unless you're going to take Thome out of the DH slot if Swisher gets hurt or needs a day off, the backup 1b could be quite useful.
  17. QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 27, 2008 -> 01:59 PM) It seems Obama has been telling stories about how his uncle was an American troop whom went into Auschwitz and liberated it. Uh, the Soviets liberated Auschwitz and it appears Obama didn't even have an uncle in the armed services. oh Barack, you so crazy I know it's the GOP only thread, but FWIW, it turns out it was Buchenwald and his Great Uncle, both of which have been confirmed. He messed up 2 details. Figured you guys might not see the details in the "Hillary" thread if I didn't mention it here.
  18. QUOTE (ChiSox35 @ May 27, 2008 -> 08:09 PM) Skimming through the Trib sports section today I read a comment from Konerko to the tune of him being able to try and grind it out or he could take time off to let it heal to the point where he's comfortable. I love Paulie and all, but this is painful to watch and there's no other way to put it. Give him 2 weeks off, bring someone up, maybe Fields, and see where that takes you. A half inning with Paulie scheduled to bat at this point is a 2 out inning for the opposing pitcher/defense. The big problem is, 2 weeks off seems like it's not going to make a difference according to the diagnosis people.
  19. QUOTE (Jim Spencer @ May 27, 2008 -> 06:25 PM) How long can someone be on a Rehab Assignment? Couldn't the Sox just leave him down there like they did Ross Gload 2 years ago? No, they can't. He would have to have a minor league option remaining or be signed to a minor league deal, neither of which are true. The plan according to Farmer tonight is to give Uribe 3? days in AAA and then have him rejoin the team in Tampa.
  20. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 27, 2008 -> 05:10 PM) Yeah, but they would have had the runner before home plate was crossed. Hell, at least the inning would have been over.
  21. Official scorer did not give Paulie an error on the throw home. Yet anyway.
  22. Konerko trying to top the league in Errors from 1b. Ozzie, it's time to throw a chair or two.
  23. QUOTE (daa84 @ May 27, 2008 -> 04:50 PM) i guess he thought it was gonna drop Lost track of # of outs more likely.
