QUOTE (fathom @ May 27, 2008 -> 04:19 PM) Well, there you have it...Toby's batting average isn't the same as his on base pct. Considering he's hitting .368 right now, that OBP wasn't bad before the walk.

Ok, based on this LA Times bit, I'll retract my earlier statements. From what I'm reading now, I think it is actually fact that his Uncle's unit was the first to find part of the Buchenwald complex.

Swisher's got a shot at the Mendoza line by the end of this game.

QUOTE (robinventura23 @ May 27, 2008 -> 03:35 PM) Keep him down there. I don't exactly think he's sporting a lot of minor league options right now.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 27, 2008 -> 03:05 PM) Dodgers brought their split-squad lineup tonight, as they're benching R. Martin and J. Kent. Jeff Kent and his .659 OPS this season? The rookie Luis Maza who they're playing in his place has at least been hot in the games he's played, over a 1.000 OPS in his first 17 MLB at bats. The one they're really missing is Furcal.

QUOTE (flavum @ May 27, 2008 -> 02:26 PM) How about next Monday with the rest of the team? I've long been of the opinion that one great way to increase the odds of a player playing a 120 game season is to try to play them a 160 game season and never give them a rest until they actually do get hurt. No matter how hot a guy is, a 162 game schedule is absolutely grueling. For a young guy like Q, ok, maybe you push him for 150+, but he hasn't had an extra day off since he moved in to the starting lineup on day 3 of the season. Even at that pace he's pushing 156 games, and otherwise, that looks like trying to hit 160.

QUOTE (WSoxMatt @ May 27, 2008 -> 02:02 PM) Would you put Linebrink in the ASG game as well??? Honestly...probably not. Simple logic here...first choice goes to the closers. In the AL, you've got 5 potential top ones. Rivera, Nathan, Jenks, Papelbon, and Rodriguez, all who have piled up 10+ saves so far and have ERA's under 2.35. On top of that, Liney isn't the top set up man in the AL right now. Okajima's only given up 2 runs in 20 innings for a 0.86 ERA. And there's always the potential issue of needing to find a guy from a team that's struggling or not putting up big numbers to take. Liney keeps up the low 1's ERA's, then he's got a case, but when you're going up against closers, middle relief is a rough position to make the AS team from.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 27, 2008 -> 12:41 PM) These potential VP comparisons are pretty meaningless now and they will be until there are 2 candidates left and we are in full general election mode. There's no way to get an accurate gauge of Dems as long as Hillary supporters still think she has a chance. Furthermore, they're even more meaningless in that 2/3 of the people being polled simply aren't known outside of most political circles. How many people nationwide know people like the governor of Arizona, or Pennsylvania? The reason Edwards does the best on all of those is..."Oh yeah, John Edwards, I know him!"

QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ May 27, 2008 -> 01:26 PM) Looks like Thome is out tonight: Cabrera SS Ozuna 3B Quentin LF Dye RF Konerko 1B Swisher DH Ramirez 2B Anderson CF Hall C Nothing wrong with that. Probably should be resting him more. Especially with the lefties. Although I'm not sure how much I like the all righty lineup, lefties are only hitting .077 against Laffey on the season, so that's not that bad of a move on paper. I think Dye and Q ought to get offdays within the next few.

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ May 27, 2008 -> 12:55 PM) 1. Sure up the bench. I read a stat that we only had 7 BB's and 10 extra base hits for all of our bench players so far. That's something KW could look to address at the deadline. One thing I'm wondering on this stat is how much this is impacted by the fact that Ozzie hasn't really given a lot of rest to people yet this year, at least to my eyes. Before Uribe got hurt, people seemed pretty amazed at how often Ozzie was using his standard, everyday lineup compared to previous years. Toby Hall has performed well enough, despite the fact that most of hits hits have been singles. When Anderson gets a few days in a row to play, he seems to start hitting. Alexei's picking it up, although his slow start could easily have contributed to those numbers. Pablo...well, we need someone who can back up 3rd base, and sticking Fields on the bench won't do much unless he's spending time at DH as well, which only works if Thome is out.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 27, 2008 -> 12:11 PM) Investigators, sure, but GI's? Probably not. I'm thinking Obama just gaffed on the camp's name on this one. I could certainly believe that, but it's not as bad of a gaffe to my eyes as saying that they "Liberated Auschwitz".
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 27, 2008 -> 12:03 PM) That article says that the 4th was ordered to tour a different camp, not Auschwitz. I'm really doubting that US Soldiers were allowed into Soviet territory. My error on that one, gotcha, but I'll still bet that the U.S. had more than a few people tour that site.

QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ May 27, 2008 -> 11:07 AM) Would I be crazy in saying Sammy Sosa probably deserves to be in the top18 based off his career in Chicago, he has fallen off greatly with fans now but during his day he was damn good, 600 HR's. If Sammy Sosa had done so cleanly, then he'd probably be well within the top 10.

When has KW ever gone out, targeted a guy, acquired a guy, and then moved him on for nothing? That's what would be happening if Richar wasn't still in the plans. He might well have won the starting 2b job in ST had it not been for his visa issues and injuries. I think the odds are he'll be in the lineup to start next year if he comes back, heals up, and performs this year.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 27, 2008 -> 10:41 AM) Were any American troops ever there after the Soviets liberated it? Unquestionably yes. Eisenhower even ordered the U.S. 4th armored division to tour Auschwitz so that they could all see with their own eyes what the Nazis had done, in the hopes of denialism from springing up. On top of that, you would have had probably hundreds, maybe thousands of Americans going through those facilities in preparation for the war crimes trials.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2008 -> 10:14 AM) Wow. That's not good at all. As far as I can tell, Obama never spoke the actual word "Liberate". He says his Uncle was one of the first Americans to go there. No idea whether or not it's true, but it's certainly true that Americans were brought to the facility by the Russians after it was captured. The word "Liberate" seems to have been added by CBS as far as I can tell, because the WaPo doesn't use it. CBS Version:, note the fact that liberate is outside of the direct quotes. WaPo version: It's entirely possible he was wrong on the facts and his uncle hit some other camp other than Auschwitz, I have no idea. But it appears as far as I can tell he never described it the way the CBS writer did.

Something food related could be cool. Best Pizza, best Chicago restaurant (could be great for Taste-time), etc.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 27, 2008 -> 06:52 AM) I agree that will be among the top 3 or 4 issue for almost everyone. And the GOP will have their usual advantage there, but maybe not to quite the same extent, given their change in tack over the past 8 years. Actually question for anyone who knows this - has McCain indicated favorability on any new or increased taxes? I know about his flip-flopping on the Bush tax cuts, but I am curious if McCain has commented on Soc Sec tax cap, oil-related taxes, etc. As far as I can tell, the answer to that is no. The bullet point summary of his tax plan is that on paper, he quite rapidly drops federal tax receipts from 18.8% of the GDP to 16.8% of GDP and says he'll cut spending to make up the difference by eliminating entitlements and earmarks without any specifics.

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 27, 2008 -> 06:29 AM) Seriously this thread title does look like it's advocating Javy for a Cy Young. And that's a bad thing because...?
-
QUOTE (RME JICO @ May 26, 2008 -> 10:08 AM) Why would a player actually care about something like that "during" a game? Cabrera's clearly only trying to help the team. The fewer errors he's charged with, the better the chance is that he'll wind up as a type A free agent when he walks at the end of the year, and that gets us an extra draft pick!

What No thread on Joakim yet????

I for one can't wait until Jose gets another October shot @ the Angels.

Yeah, like everyone else said, if we're even in the race, and as crappy as the other teams in the Central are doing that seems almost assured of being true...you can't trade him at the deadline. However...This offseason...if Broadway keeps performing in AAA, and perhaps gets a positive couple of starts in the big leagues later this year, then it might well be time to move Jose this offseason. Between saving $10 million in salary and perhaps filling in a hole a bit before Jose hits FA at the end of next year, that wouldn't be a horrible move in my eyes. Broadway certainly seems like he might be able to hold down the #5 starter role next year.
