  1. QUOTE(joesaiditstrue @ Mar 28, 2008 -> 03:44 PM) oh, don't get me wrong, i guess i should've been more clear. i'm not against having a long-man in the pen, period, i just don't want it to be masset. because if you're relying on masset to be that long-man/spot starter, then the team is done already. i'd personally rather have broadway in that role, he looked pretty sharp in that last royals series last year is it finalized that it's simple down to macdougal/masset/wasserman for the final spot, or just wass vs. masset? i'd rather put massett on waivers, bring up broadway and keep wasserman & macD in the pen, assuming macD is already set in stone i just don't like the idea of masset being our longman, he's brutal The only way to keep both Wasserman and Macdougal in the pen and also bring up Broadway would be to go with an 8 man bullpen and send down Quentin, Anderson, Ramirez, or Hall. And while we may not like Hall, I don't think sticking Anderson or Konerko or someone like that behind the plate when AJ needs a day off will be that effective. It's a pitching pick 2 of Masset, MMac, Wasserman, Broadway, Sisco, Haeger, Ohka, and anyone else you want to name. There are 2 slots available amongst those guys. The other 5 are filled by Jenks, Logan, Thornton, Dotel, and Linebrink.
  2. From the "awesome headline" category: And CNN, it's POP! (Maybe we need 2 versions of CNN.com, one for soda country and one for pop country)
  3. QUOTE(palehose23 @ Mar 28, 2008 -> 03:16 PM) Where? Chicago Tribune MLB.com/Whitesox.com Northwest Indiana Times. Pravda.
  4. Jerry Reinsdorf is still cheap and nothing will ever convince me otherwise. Why isn't AROD at 3rd!!!!!
  5. Hmmm, my wife's high school in South Bend just turned down an opportunity to have Hillary visit there. Link.
  6. Normally I'm not sure I'd even bother posting a "5 former secretaries of state ask next President to immediately close Gitmo" article, because I feel like I've heard the refrain before. But what caught my eye on this one was a couple of the names. Madeline Albright Warren Christopher...ok, expected, both served under Clinton. Colin Powell...Well, he didn't like it when it opened, but that one is pretty surprising. James Baker...the Bush family fixer and Sec state under Bush 1. Ok, surprising also. Both of these loyalist types essentially saying Bush was wrong. And #5: Henry Kissinger. (Jaw drops). When Henry Kissinger is signing on to letters saying that we should do things to appease the rest of the world and improve our reputation (and mind you, I believe he'll still be arrested for war crimes if he travels to the wrong country)...I think that's starting to send a message.
  7. Radar magazine quiz: Jesus or Barack Obama?
  8. QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Mar 28, 2008 -> 01:47 PM) Crede stated the other day that the Sox have yet to even make an offer. There is a part of me that thinks that Crede would sign for a fair price if it was offered and Boras can't stop him. It is up to Crede to decide what to do. I think they let Fields tear it up in AAA and move him for an top level prospect. I'm pretty sure that the reason the Sox haven't even made an offer yet is that about a year ago they went to Mr. Boras and tried to see if he'd even consider listening to an offer and were rebuffed.

  11. QUOTE(ptatc @ Mar 28, 2008 -> 11:54 AM) for good Lamar Hoyt for Ozzie Guillen Luis Salazar and a relief pitcher Tim....(Studdard maybe?) Harold Baines (although he is one of my all time favorites) and Fred Manrique for Sammy Sosa, Wilson alavrez, Scott Fletcher and I think Wayne Tolleson For Bad Daniel Cortes and Tyler Lumnsden for Mike MacDougal. I really dislike dealing two young pitchers in any deal. Todd Ritchie although we didn't lose much we traded two pitchers again In terms of the Cortes/Lumsden deal, no matter how much you may dislike MMac, what has happened with those 2 pitchers that has suggested that deal will be a bad one? Cortes had a good year last year, but he's still a 20 year old in High A ball, and we've had an awful lot of jokes made here the last year or so about trading people for A-ball pitchers. And Lumsden had a pretty darn bad year last year as a 24 year old in AAA, put up a 1.7 WHIP or something like that. Can I nominate the Sammy Sosa for George Bell trade as a good one simply because it produced a dramatic reduction in the amount of used needles and cork in the White Sox locker room?
  12. I'm a youngin' so I can't talk about anything before recent years...but let me be the first to nominate Esteban Loaiza for Jose Contreras. Since it brought us a nice shiny trophy.
  13. Remember a couple months back, we had that big discussion thread where a lady had purchased a $100,000 BMW with a credit app. that seriously overestimated her income? Seems we've got a leaked memo coming out of Chase, no idea how widely it was used, suggesting that for some people, even at a major bank, those sorts of things might well have been standard policy over the past few years.
  14. QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 28, 2008 -> 10:14 AM) I just pointed out what I read. And when I cite random, unsupported things that appear on left-leaning blogs, I get pounced on for them.
  15. QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 28, 2008 -> 10:13 AM) Kinda like Jeremiah Wright is a trusted and close advisor to Obama. LOL, do I even need to bother going through all the ways this is different?
  16. QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 28, 2008 -> 09:56 AM) Let me put it this way. What the candidates actually have to say is what's important. What Bush and Bill have to say are, comparatively, irrelevent. Better? What Bush has to say is pretty irrelevant to this campaign, on that I'll agree. And the sooner he's completely irrelevant the better our country is. But I'll contend through the election even if Hillary somehow pulls out the primary that Bill Clinton's words should be treated as the words of a trusted and close adviser to the candidate. He should be considered to be at the "Dick Cheney" level, where he's guaranteed to have a lot of sway in the decision making and will probably be more powerful than anyone who has ever held that position before.
  17. QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 28, 2008 -> 09:48 AM) You know what? Bill Clinton and George Bush are both irrelevent at this point. They are both has beens, and I mean that in the most respectful way as they both held the title of Mr. President. But what they think and/or say should really be ignored as far the upcoming election is concerned. I don't think that's the case at all. First of all, if Hillary Clinton is still running, then Bill Clinton is very much a part of the story, as there's never been a first husband, let alone a first husband who happens to be a former president and who would clearly have some influence in the administration. Secondly, there's the policy matters. If a candidate is advocating restoring a policy of the clinton administration (i.e. returning to Clinton-era tax levels) or advocating continuing a policy of the Bush administration (i.e. a few hundred more years in Iraq) then that puts either of those administrations on the table because there's no better way to evaluate the policies being advocated for than by looking at how they've already done.
  18. QUOTE(BearSox @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 11:47 PM) Garland pitched 5 solid innings yesterday... Now, was the upgrade of Cabrera over Iguchi/Richar (since Uribe will be starting) worth the downgrade from Garland to Contreras/Danks/Floyd? As long as Cabrera performs well enough to remain a type A free agent, I'll still say yes.
  19. QUOTE(Felix @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 09:19 PM) Thats because the Twins got robbed for Santana. If they had gotten a package that came close to his true value, a potential package for Buehrle wouldn't be in the same zip code. For a guy, any guy, with 1 year left on his contract and a payday well over $100 million coming, I think the Twins probably came out with a pretty fair value. The difference with Buehrle is he's on a 4 year contract right now.
  20. It's never easy to judge these days how accurate each report out of Iraq is since the U.S. media has cut back significantly on their coverage over there and it's hard to corroborate anything, but here's the Times of London painting a pretty bleak picture of the last few days' fighting.
  21. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 05:30 PM) Actually, you are suggesting a total re-haul in which the primary ends early, even though no one has reached the necessary delegates. The system was setup to have the super delegates determine a contest such as this. Now if YOU want a total re-do of the system, that is fine. Edit: Unless, of course, you are suggesting all the supers jump in to disenfranchise Pennsylvania, Indiana, and whatever other state is left. Thats fine with me and it would obviously be well within the Democrat rules. And it sounds like a good plan. One thing I don't understand...how is asking whether or not Hillary is going to leave once the math becomes such that it's difficult for her to have a shot any different than asking when Huckabee is going to get out of the Republican race after Super Tuesday, or asking if Romney was going to leave the race after Florida, or stretching back farther, asking when Edwards and Dean were going to drop out in 04, etc.?
  22. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 03:59 PM) But northsidesox72, shouldn't all the voters have their voices heard? Florida and Michigan have already been disenfranchised, should Pennsylvania suffer the same fate? The votes will still be counted and I don't know if/when Hillary might end her campaign, but if the "it's over" meme really takes hold, that's the kind of one that could really kill her in PA. A good comparison might be where the Republicans were after Florida. There's not enough delegates to end it yet, Huckabee doesn't drop out until it's officially over, but everyone kinda starts realizing that it will be soon. Doesn't mean that the last 3/4 of the states were disenfranchised.
  23. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 03:25 PM) Nick Swisher is the guy I think the Sox could get the most for right now. Jenks could net a lot, but he has arbitration looming. The Sox would have to be out of their minds to move Swisher right now. Yes, he has value, but he's coming off a clearly down year and is moving in to a much better hitter's ballpark with a much better power hitting lineup around him. Next offseason, maybe he goes from being a guy who's on the market after hitting 25 home runs to a guy on the market after hitting 35-40.
