QUOTE(Reddy @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 06:03 PM) right. Edwards beating Clinton is what we're hoping for - and it may just become a reality. all day i've been canvassing and convincing people to go from Clinton to Edwards and it's been working. She's been doing a number on herself on her own - crying and such - and most people i talk to, edwards supporters or no, have said "anyone but hillary!" the newest poll has us within 6 of clinton and with the way she's going down and the way we're shooting up around here... it'll be interesting. I'm reading this as "The Mariners offered us Adam Jones in a Konerko Deal". Anyway, I'd like to add that Edwards didn't do himself any favors by deciding to attack the moment another candidate showed some emotion.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 05:34 PM) You said the same thing about Iowa as well. The last time he predicted interesting results on an election day...the White Sox traded for Swisher. Perhaps he's actually KW, and he's toying with us in this thread, laughing comically as we think all his posts that seem to be about Edwards are actually coded predictions regarding trades.

Heath Phillips was Designated for Assignment on the day that the Sox Traded for Carlos Quentin, and therefore seems to no longer be with the team. So I'd say no. Furthermore, Heath was signed by the Yankees to a minor league deal.

QUOTE(chisox100 @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 03:20 PM) Bartolo Colon and Livian Hernadez are still Free agents both would be good inning eaters as a 5th starter, there both getting desperate to sign so they will both be cheap. I will take every pitcher in the top 2 levels of our organization before I take Livan Hernandez right now. And Colon, on the other hand, supposedly is not throwing 90 on the gun yet and may well be a lot more costly than we think.

QUOTE(Felix @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 02:02 PM) This post could have meant something if it wasn't made on the premise that fielding percentage was a good tool to determine defensive value. It may not be the best tool, but it certainly is illustrative of a trend in this case.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 02:25 PM) I find it somewhat ironic that Gio and DLS are considered by a few on this board as these cant-miss stud type talents, when Danks and Floyd are in the same if not better pedigree rankings-wise. In 2006 Danks was rated as high at the 12th best prospect in baseball, neither DLS or Gio have touched that, and maybe never will. Basically he should have stayed in the minors last year and would have started this year as our top prospect, instead he developed early and gained some much needed MLB experience. Gavin Floyd was among the same if not better pedigree ranking in the top ten and as high as 14 as a 22 year old. He's been listed in the top 50 4 times, and was a number 4 overall pick. Where exactly was this ranking that had Danks as #12 in 2006? It wasn't Baseball America, he's never topped 50 there.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 01:51 PM) From what I recall: Obama finished law school... interned with a major law firm where he met his wife... I think he worked as a PD or some other public sector legal practice... worked on the ground with campaigns of various sorts, during and after law school... then served in the Illinois Senate... before being elected to the US Senate. I am a bit fuzzy on the period after interning and before Illinois Senate, though. I am sure Wikipedia or what not have more complete info on that period, or even his website. BO served about 8 years in the Illinois Senate before moving onto the national stage. Just sorta picked a google link to an NYT article with sort of a summary of his work there. For a good look at Obama's community organizer days, here's a Chicago Reader piece from 1995 (when his book was published) reprinted online.

I picked up one little nugget about B-12 shots that I didn't know beforehand from an ESPN piece a few days ago. Also, here's a BG piece with another witness saying that he saw Clemens inject himself with B-12. Meanwhile, here's a couple doctors asked about Lidocaine usage. They seem to both agree...the strangest part would be getting it shot into your ass.

QUOTE(Tannerfan @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 12:14 PM) Jim Rome made a good point about Clemens filing a defamation suit. If he has to testify in front of a Congressional committee, and has a lawsuit filed he can claim that he can't talk about specific situations that pertain to the suit. So instead of taking the fifth and looking guilty, he can say sorry I can't get in to that for legal reasons. And I think a lot of people have heard enough of "We won't comment on an ongoing investigation" from politicians to think that using that answer would be a pretty slimy looking way to avoid answering questions.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 10:05 AM) Maybe not a VP candidate either. May just be making an exit, and if he leaves after NH and endorses Obama, he may get a cabinet post or something. Undersecretary for Fighting Poverty or something. Labor or HHS seems to fit his experience.
-
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 06:28 AM) Lots of NH polls out. Ignoring the usually unreliable ones (Zogby, ARG, Suffolk), just from the 1/5-6 period we have: CNN: McCain +6 Pierce: McCain +9 Gallup: McCain +4 Str Vis: McCain +8 Those are all leads over Romney. Huckabee is still well down in third, no closer than 12 points to Romney. Giuliani and Paul behind Huckabee in all polls but one, which has Giuliani one point ahead of Huckabee. Thompson still no pulse in NH. Thompson admitted a few days ago that they're simply not campaigning at all in NH other than attending the debates. Unless something surprises, it's going to be much more interesting to see what happens when they move on to SC and Nevada with this group.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 06:53 AM) Roger has filed a defamation suit. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3184646 Well, I'll be fair in response to this. This is exactly what I wanted to see Mr. Clemens do if he was named in that indictment. I consider his statement more cloudy now that he's said he had Lidocaine and B-12 (a known steroid masking agent and palmeiro's excuse) injected into him, but at least he's filing the suit. Now we get to see people under oath, hopefully in public, and that's what I want to see.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 6, 2008 -> 03:51 PM) Yep. I sure can. They are trying to bury the fact that Hillary got her ass kicked in Iowa, by focusing on the GOP. You know what, you've figured it out, you're right, we're on to their secret liberal media plan. "This Republican field is so bad, the best way to help the Dems is to put all of the Republican candidates on TV constantly and let them make fools of themselves. That'll build the Dem brand more than anything - giving all our airtime to Republicans!"

QUOTE(lostfan @ Jan 6, 2008 -> 04:03 PM) Because if you are an athlete like Fields, who does have said skills, you can. A 3B who can't theoretically play 1st is pretty much worthless. IMO, if we put Fields at 1b, yes, he could learn to play there fairly quickly, although he'd probably give a few more errors than we'd like this season. But, the value of a 3rd baseman who is average defensively but who can hit 40+ home runs a year is significantly above the value of that same player at 1b, and I think that's what we have with Josh. It's easier to fill in 1b with a bat than it is at 3rd, and you'd pay a premium price to put a bat at 3rd base compared with putting one at 1b. It's cheaper to find replacement 1b's who give you power than it is to find 3rd basemen who do that, and therefore, moving Fields only hurts us.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 6, 2008 -> 03:52 PM) Considering Floyd is out of options, I still think there's a chance Danks could start 2008 in AAA. Of course a lot of that will depend on whether the Sox acquire Ervin Santana in a Paul Konerko deal. I still don't think there's a chance the Angels are going to make a deal with the White Sox. And I think KW genuinely does have some confidence in his young pitchers, and I think he realizes he needs the young pitchers he has right now to succeed for his rebuilding plan to work.
-
QUOTE(lostfan @ Jan 6, 2008 -> 02:35 PM) That's not really that crazy. At worst that's unfounded optimism (or pessimism if you're saying Danks will crash) I think it's entirely possible that both Floyd and Danks will be roughly "Average" next year, and if that happens, we'll consider Floyd more valuable simply because he's almost guaranteed to give us more innings and remain fresher longer.

Hmmm...today's media coverage. Can someone tell me what's missing there?

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 05:01 PM) I don't know about that. Bush was more of an evangelical candidate/president. I think FOX thought Guiliani was more of a moderate, so some people at the network liked that. Huckabee seems more like G.W. Bush jr. Huckabee uses some of the religious language of GWBush, but aside from a few scraps it's hard to say he's acted on those statements though. Giuliani seems totally on board with the war policy, the torture policies, and the unitary executive/Congress doesn't matter at all policies of the Bush admin, and I think that's why Fox likes him.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 04:43 PM) The fact that there are so many leaks coming out makes me feel like this is BS. I know the Angels have been accused of having some leaks in the past but Kenny rarely has a deal that gets leaked this far in advance and actually happens. I'm thinking they would consider dealing Kenny but I would reckon teams like the Dodgers, Mariners, & Giants are more realistic options. I think a lot of people here seem like they'd like to deal Kenny, but we all know that's just not going to happen.
