QUOTE(southsideirish @ Dec 21, 2007 -> 09:39 AM) This is the exact reason why he doesn't want the option included and why he didn't re-sign with the Cubs. They insisted on the option year. This is the reason you will not be able to sign Prior. You insist on it and he walks away and signs with someone else. He is banking on having a great year and he wants to cash in on that great year. Smart move if he can do. And for a team that thinks it has an outside shot at competing next year but also thinks that they need at least 1 more starting pitcher to do so, it makes perfect sense to offer him that 1 year deal. I can come up with some potential candidates who could fill that role nicely off the top of my head. The Mets, the Astros, the Braves, the Mariners, and to a lesser extent you can throw in guys like Toronto, San Diego, etc. It makes a lot more sense for one of those teams to offer him a 1 year deal than it does for us.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 21, 2007 -> 09:24 AM) We don't have depth at anything except bad players. We could get into it over that, but let me respond by asking this; how does picking up Mark Prior for one year when he'll probably spend half of it on the DL and then certainly walk at the end of the year fix that?

QUOTE(NUKE @ Dec 21, 2007 -> 07:34 AM) Consensus??? LOL!!!!!! Yeah right. http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?Fus...c8-3c63dc2d02cb 400 different climate scientists from a broad range of Universities and Governmental organizations on record as saying the current warming cycle the earth is going through is not man-made. Actually the way you've put it there is distinctly different from what this Inhofe report shows, which is not surprising because that's actually the mistake they were hoping people would make. Here's the first paragraph of what you link: And here's your words: You've made the big jump from saying that these are 400 scientists to saying these are 400 climate scientists. It's also worth noting how they've gotten some of these names. Some of them come from such distinguished institutions as the Argentinean Foundation for a Scientific Ecology, for one example, or "of a Michigan NBC TV affiliate" as another. Heck, the titles of these guys get better and better as I'm reading. It's also worth noting that this isn't exactly a petition. They basically have kept records of every single skeptical sort of statement they could find, of any kind, and stuck that person in there without actually paying attention to what they were evaluating. Now, this statement is in fact true. The cloud model part is in fact the main reason why we're not certain about whether the temp rise will be 2 or 5 degrees C, as of now. But that doesn't mean that the guy is necessarily saying that anthropogenic climate change is a myth. He's making a note about the quality of one particular part of a model. There are more than a few examples of that sort of quote-lifting...finding people who criticize one little aspect of the consensus and pretending tha thte whole list of 400 threw everything out the window.

QUOTE(RME JICO @ Dec 21, 2007 -> 06:16 AM) MCab will never play in a Sox uniform. His next contract is going to be A-Rod like. I actually disagree. The way the Sox are set right now, they could certainly be in the bidding for a high priced guy 2 years from now. They've added a bunch of young guys to their roster to fill holes, and in 2 years, Thome and Contreras will have their contracts cleared, along with Cabrera and some amount of inflation. With one or two more young guys coming along in the rotation or maybe in the OF, and some amount of revenue inflation, we'll be more than in a position to go after a big guy 2 years from now...as long as we don't do something horrendously stupid like blowing $18 million a year on a 33 year old CF.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 21, 2007 -> 08:54 AM) Because we have great depth. No, because we have more pitching depth than position player depth, and signing Prior actually hurts the cause of fixing that. I still would rather take a flyer on Dallas McPherson if we're signing a non-tendered guy.
-
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Dec 21, 2007 -> 08:24 AM) Yes. Prior is saying he will refuse any contract longer than one year or with any team option of any sort. There's no point in discussing anything but a one-year deal. And some team will give it to him. I just don't think it should be us.

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 06:51 PM) Where are Danks, Fields, Richar and Floyd on that list? None of them would count on any prospect list right now, as they've all had too many AB's/Innings pitched to count as a prospect for anyone.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 06:37 PM) Unfair to whom? You? Them? Unfair to the chemists and the drug manufacturers, who toil in obscurity until they wind up in jail. I say they should be honored along with Mr. Bonds and Mr. Clemens! Where would they be without those loyal servants, trying to do nothing but make an honest profit by creating and selling products in an illegal fashion!

QUOTE(Elgin Slim @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 05:16 PM) Haven't you guys learned? Everyone who plays for the Sox organization sucks and every other player in the majors or minors is so f***ing awesome. We can't get better because no one will take our s***ty players. We can only get worse. By 2020 we will only win 15 games the whole season and by 2025 we won't win a game. I want to see the Miami Dolphins beat us!

3 more names, unmentioned in the Mitchell Report, are noted in the Jason Grimsley affidavit, which has been unsealed. Pete Incaviglia, Geronimo Berroa, and Allen Watson.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 04:32 PM) That depends on how strong Mrs. Bill Clinton comes out of the gates. If she's "popular" they all will endorse her, and if Obama is "popular", he will get the endorsements. Everyone likes a "winner." The only endorsements I really care about right now are any that are offered pre-Iowa.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 04:06 PM) Willis, who is significantly better vs lefties than righties, should do decent against a lot of the top hitters in the AL Central. I really don't care whether the best hitters in this division are righty or lefty...If he puts up that .913 OPS against righties again next year, he's toast. Put up a .760 OPS against righties in 06. We'll see which one harkens to the future better.

QUOTE(G&T @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 03:35 PM) He's also going to miss, what, 25 games for amphetamines? And another 50 the next time he tests positive. And considering he's tested positive 2x so far...

Link. I really hope that Willis is actually declining as much as he looked to be last year.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 02:55 PM) He wasn't? Was he close? Who was? Yes I am. Bobby had issues. Pierzynski - Possibly one of the worst trades ever in the history or MLB. Then he supposedly had issues. Your comparisons are funny. Milledge peaked at #9 on the Baseball America list before 2006. Just above guys named Matt Cain and Prince Fielder. And right behind this Verlander dude.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 02:45 PM) Yeah there's enough interest in guys such as Jennings, Garcia etc. who have had surgery, so that shows precisely where the pitching market is at. I mean would you rather Carlos Silva at 4/44, or rather take a 1 year flyer on Prior? I'd go the latter. If it pays off, you either try to re-sign, or trade him at the deadline for some nice value. If it doesn't, well it was worth a shot. With a spot on the 40 man, I agree with that sentiment...I just think it makes more sense for the White Sox to go that route witha position player rather than a pitcher, since we at least have a boatload of pitchers who could benefit from seeing that time in the MLB already. Which is why I have more of an interest in McPherson, especially if Crede is moved, as I think he's more likely to be healthy and he fills the need of a bat in the future (esp. if Jim Thome were to leave).

QUOTE(knightni @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 02:15 PM) Why would anyone sign him if it is only for one year? Seems to me that Prior needs at least one year of rehab first before they can fix his pitching flaws. Because Prior wants only 1 year so that he can hit the FA market next offseason again hopefully having improved people's view of him. And out of the entire MLB, you think that there isn't one team that would offer a 1 year deal to a pitcher who they're not sure will be healthy? Someone will do it. If I were someone like Baltimore, Houston, San Diego, Washington, Pittsburgh, some team like that which could either use a pitcher or use trade bait, why not.

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 02:05 PM) If they get Roberts...they are going to start looking like the Yankees. Go out, get juiced players, throw them on the field and see what happens. Fixed that for you.

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 01:10 PM) Clinton Launches Obama Attack Web Sites http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/st...2659&page=1 I'm really curious to know the answer to this question...if Obama makes it to the general, will he be able to do the same sort of "all negative ads and statements against me are dirty, underhanded tricks by my opponents" that seems to keep working to turn every attack on him into a ding in Hillary's armor.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 12:33 PM) I hope the Cubs win the World Series just to spite you. I think that saying those first 8 words together should be a bannable offense.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 01:06 PM) He just needs to be fired before he screws up more this offseason. What exactly has KW done wrong this offseason? KW has done 3 deals this offseason; Linebrink, Quentin, and Cabrera. Clearly, if you're referring to screwups, you must think a couple of those are mistakes. Please tell me which ones.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 12:36 PM) Update: Tancredo officially drops out, and endorses Romney. Not sure if that helps or hurts Mitt. Tancredo was getting 2-3% in Iowa, which is something I guess. But he is awfully divisive. IMO, that absolutely helps Romney, especially right before the Holidays. Huckabee really was helped by the Brownback endorsement, which helped solidify him as the candidate of all the Christian folks. But Huckabee has been seen as vulnerable on immigration, especially in a Republican primary, and this reinforces that.
