  1. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 06:10 PM) As compared to whats getting done now? At least they have it on the record they passed it and president vetoed. Maybe if SCHIP wasn't being expanded to all illegal aliens 25 and under, while cutting aid to seniors, it would have passed. Of course, the compromise bill got rid of both of those clauses, requiring people to at least present a Social Security number.
  2. Btw, does it seem to anyone else like the A's got a bigger haul for Haren than they did for Hudson + Mulder combined?
  3. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 04:07 PM) So does this make a deal for a major bat the next thing they do. Do they have enough prospects to get that bat? We know they have an extra pitcher to deal, but they'd need more than just that, imo. Aside from 1b, where does that squad have room to insert a bat?
  4. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 04:05 PM) Dude thats awesome....his stache in a Sox hat....I think its time for a new Soxtalk Banner!!! Dude, Bonds in one of our jerseys is disgusting enough.
  5. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 04:04 PM) Just look at that pitching: Webb, Haren, Davis, Owings, Randy Johnson, Petit, Edgar Gonzalez, Qualls, Pena, Cruz, Lyon, Medders, Slaten. They'll have guys in AAA better than the 2nd or 3rd best RP on some teams. That is astonishing depth, even assuming Randy Johnson gets hurt again. They don't need to hit with all that, and with that said you assume their young hitters will improve. Might see these guys keep breaking the Cubs hearts for the next few years, and I approve. I wouldn't just talk about them. Aside from the Giants, the amount of young talent in that division is extraordinary. The Dodgers are loaded, the D-Backs are loaded, and the Rockies just went to the series.
  6. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 03:56 PM) I think the Dbacks are a better time now than they were heading into the day. The upgrade from Livan to Haren is substantial, while the downgrade from Valverde to Pena as closer with Qualls in the bullpen isn't that bad. Well, they're certainly better than they were heading into the day at the major league level, but I'm not sure that comes from this trade at all. Was Valverde nearing FA?
  7. Hmm, not sure what to make of this deal. Adding a starter but dropping that key part of their bullpen. Somehow I'm not sure how this makes sense for either team. Especially when you factor in the Lidge deal for the Stros.
  8. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 03:32 PM) Low risk, very high reward. Sox need some type of insurance, at least as a stopgap starting pitcher. I feel more confident in Prior than Floyd honestly. He'll come cheaply, and from a PR standpoint, it can't hurt, especially if he does good. Well, 2 things. If you're concerned about Salary, someone's probably going to risk a couple million on Prior. And there's always the question of 40 man spots, especially now that Gonzalez is gone. We can only pick up so many of these low risk, high reward type guys. There's more than a few of them out there now, Otsuka, McPherson, Prior, etc. We can't possibly pick up all of them.
  9. QUOTE(rcpweiner @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 03:28 PM) From Rotoworld: That can't make you feel happy, knowing we had 2 of the pieces in our system. Well, when I look at it and see that we got Quentin and Richar for that...and that was only what, half of what it took to get Haren, yes it does, because that makes me feel like either the D-Backs gave up a ton to get Haren or that we made out pretty well on Quentin and Richar.
  10. The candidates, on both sides, were asked by the AP what their most prized possession is. I'm posting the GOP varieties because of one person's particularly good answer.
  11. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 02:57 PM) Um this is proving the Bonds "apologists" right. When Bonds was indicted, it was as if he was convicted. When Clemens was fingered, its all "hearsay", "convicted felons testifying", etc etc. Thats the exact same s*** thats happening to Bonds, but back then no one was saying how its totally unreliable. They were treating him like a convict. Its funny to see all these reporters change their feelings now that the precious has been accused. Does it matter if I think he's just as guilty as Bonds?
  12. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 01:42 PM) There's just something in the water in Minnesota. Juan Rincon agrees with you, and would like to call you to testify on his account so as to prove that test wasn't his fault, but was in fact due to contaminated water.
  13. QUOTE(ptatc @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 01:32 PM) If this is accurrate, what an awful year for pitching. Only 7 in the top 20? Well, thankfully, we're drafting high in a weak pitching year and we're much, much, much more in the need of position player prospects than pitching ones.
  14. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 10:50 AM) The only thing that Uribe used was a shovel to put food in his mouth. And maybe a shotgun.
  15. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 10:44 AM) So approximately how much truth is in this? http://www.cobrabrigade.com/2007/12/sampson_gone.php Well, we have no idea yet. Nothing on the Google about it. This is the most recent piece with Sampson's name in it. Sampson there is saying it's academic reasons. Of course, I'm sure he also said "phone calls, what phone calls" too.
  16. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 09:31 AM) If you sue just to sue your going to get burned. My point is...I don't care if they lose. Yes, the standard of proof is high. But at least you're facing your accuser. If you're not willing to do that, if you're not willing to face a loss, why should I believe you?
  17. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 09:05 AM) So are you committing to believe anyone who files a lawsuit? I'm committing to give a fair evaluation to any statements they give or evidence they bring forth. I will say this, I will believe a denial under oath vastly more than I will believe a denial to the press. But it all depends on the quality of the denial. If you have say, Clemens, under oath, and he is asked repeatedly about the statements or documents presented in the Mitchell Report, and all he says is "they never happened", that's not doing that much, and could possibly wind up with some nice perjury charges against him. If he made an attempt to make a case, under oath, that's something I'd be more than willing to evaluate.
  18. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 05:18 AM) Agreed, Balta. What will be interesting is if the nuclear bomb comes out of the closet in the next 3-5 days. If something's going to happen, it will be today, I would think, so the Sunday talk shows could start carpet bombing for Clinton. You don't release things you want people to pay attention to on Friday afternoon. More Presidential appointees resign in disgrace and more documents deserving of investigation are released on Friday afternoon than on any other day of the week. Because people pay less attention to the news on Friday evenings and on Saturday.
  19. QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 08:58 AM) And Mitchell is indemnified, which means if they want to sue him, they have to sue Major League Baseball. Which means you are suing a corporation with an unlimited amount of funds. Like I said, even if you sue for defamation and lose, at least you're putting your money where your mouth is. That tells me something. I feel the same way about all these guys that claim "Oh it was just a tainted supplement" or "Oh it was a vitamin b-12 shot i got from Tejada". Fine. Go to court against the guy who you say wronged you. Even if your case is weak, at least present it. At least say something. Don't just sit there and say "Oh I never did anything" and expect me to believe you if you're not even willing to risk some legal fees on proving it.
  20. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 07:26 AM) It's weird cause everything I have seen reported only states Giambi as cooperationg with the investigation. Why is everyone leaving Frank out? Heck, most of the guys at ESPN are probably dumb enough to lump Giambi and Thomas together as BALCO guys if they hear the phrase "Thomas and Giambi cooperated with the investigation".
  21. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 11:23 PM) The Mitchell Report is the equivalent of an indictment, its not absolute proof, you dont get any chance to defend yourself. Well, fine. Now that they've been named, I want to see someone come out with a counter-case. Not just an "I didn't do it" in the press. They've been named and had evidence presented against them. They could, if they really had solid proof that they didn't do anything, still bring a suit against Mitchell. Or, they could bring a suit against Radomski. Or, they could simply counter Mitchell's report in the court of public opinion by producing evidence that the sales weren't for steroids, like actual doctor's receipts, or products purchased with those moneys that weren't steroids, etc. If a player truly believes he is innocent, there is a lot more that he can do than issue a simple denial. Heck, even if they brought a suit for Slander and lost, that's at least saying something; that's saying that they're willing to stand up and risk the money they've made by attempting to defend themself in this case. For now, I'm going to believe every single thing presented in the Mitchell report as anything factual until someone gives me something that I could say is equally concrete as counter-proof.
  22. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 08:10 PM) Are coupons printed offline valid for stores? I've used online coupons plenty. What is an offline coupon?
  23. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 08:10 PM) It's just another example of KW showing he has no grasp of the market. By not signing Eckstein and signing Uribe? You guys are serious in that you'd prefer Eckstein and Uribe over what we have now?
  24. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 07:15 PM) Maybe not phony. NBC is standing by that list. How exactly can they stand by that being the mitchell report list when we have the mitchell report list and it's different?
