I would say that I am less than impressed by the package they received. 24 year old 3rd baseman hitting .270 in the minors with an OPS around 850, 22 year old pitcher who probably is the most talented player in this package, soon to be 25 year old who put up a 1.60 WHIP and a 5.86 ERA in his rookie season in the NL Central last year, and a pitcher just breaking into the big leagues who'll be 27 around opening day next year, on top of Scott. Seems like the Orioles are just going for sheer numbers and not caring about actual skill.

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 09:14 AM) By: John Cole December 10, 2007 at 10:29 am Would never happen. A writer pitching an idea for free to a producer during a strike. HA!

Which AL Central lineup to you fear more?
Balta1701 replied to Steve9347's topic in The Diamond Club
The Tigers have more "Sure thing, veteran players". But those type of players sometimes wind up getting old or injured all of a sudden. The Indians have more "Risky thing, young players who could tear things up", but those players sometimes have off years or don't develop. On balance, I'm still a fan of that Indians lineup. -
Somehow, I get the feeling we'll be happy missing out on every one of these CF contracts given out so far. Maybe not the Jones one, but all the other ones...eesh.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 05:06 PM) quoted for truth. The guy got a big payday last year (20 million) and when the going got tough, Bobby got going Petrino to Arkansas There's no way he gets more than $5 million of that is there?

QUOTE(rockren @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 02:53 PM) No way in hell that'd ever happen. You just listed all of their top prospects.......no kidding you'd love that deal. I dunno, after signing Jones, they've got to be considering moving Kemp. They have as many starting OF's as the Angels. I doubt they'd move both Kershaw and Billingsly, but if it nets them Bedard they'd certainly give up one of them. The issue might be that they'd have to find something to do with Furcal. He's still a $13 million starting SS for them, even if he's only there for 1 year. I could see them setting up something around Kershaw, Kemp, and Hu for Tejada and Bedard and having both sides fairly happy, but there'd still need to be something done with Furcal.

QUOTE(Cknolls @ Dec 10, 2007 -> 12:55 PM) I think a right shoulder is forming, 1540-1550, should complete the head and shoulders. Then we head back to the downside. These crises usually end when someone, i.e., some company goes belly up. It is just a matter of time. So, the market got a 1/4 point cut today instead of the 1/2 point cut it was talking about, and right now it is hanging out at around that 1490 level Nuke referred to.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 11:15 AM) I think once a Johan deal goes down the rest of the league will get more active. I really don't think anything the Sox would be doing would be predicated on a Johan deal. The Mitchell report, that might be one thing slowing teams down right now, but when the Sox's list includes moving Crede and Uribe and deciding whether they can find appropriately priced upgrades for their last couple positions, there's not exactly anything there competing with a Johan deal. A deal like that might create 1 or 2 more holes on a team that they could fill with one of those guys, but I think teams are just waiting to see what else opens up from unexpected occurrences as the market moves (i.e. Inge suddenly being available).

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 09:51 AM) Fred Thompson is conceding New Hampshire. He has decided to go full time in Iowa from now until the 1/3 caucus, then if he actually survives that, he'll skip ahead to SC, NV and other states. Looks like the death nail for him. I just can't see him having a chance now, with three strong candidates ahead of him in IA and NH (or, in some states, 4). Its really amazing because a lot of people, myself included, thought he'd be an immediate top 3 candidate on entering the race. His campaign just sucked. Full time, for Sen. Thompson of course, is a relative thing.

QUOTE(ptatc @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 09:43 AM) good point, if we were in the same discussions for the trade. If we'd offered Broadway for Young, and the Twins offered Garza for young, right now we'd have been laughed out of the building. I'll still grant that it's entirely possible that in the long term Broadway could wind up the better choice for a number of reasons. Injuries can be totally random and unexpected, pitchers, esp. young ones on the D-Rays, can blow up for any number of reasons, coaching matters, and there are always a dozen examples you can point to of guys like Buehrle having better careers throwing 89-90 than any number of guys who throw a lot harder but with much less effectiveness. But in terms of raw value in trades, it's simply no contest right now.
-
QUOTE(ptatc @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 09:39 AM) Is it a flaw or just different philosophy? I haven't seen enough of Garza or Broadway to make a determination yet. Whether you've seen enough or not isn't necessarily the question. Right now, the D-Rays had seen enough to judge that Garza was worth one of the top position prospects in the game. Broadway certainly is not at that level of value.

David Segui, who spent 8 years of a 15 year career with the Orioles, has admitted using steroids supplied by that Radomski guy who Mitchell interviewed and repeated his admission of HGH use under a prescription. It's certainly interesting to note the clusters that seem to be forming around certain teams.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 09:32 AM) Rowand would be such a mediocre player If it wasn't for him happening to have a career year in a contract year, everyone would think this statement true everywhere, not just in S.F.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 05:53 AM) Who ever emerges from the Republician pack is going to have an assload of cash come flying in to them. With the clog on the right, there is a ton of cash sitting on the sidelines. I read somewhere not to long ago that a majority of Bush's biggest bundlers haven't done anything yet. Money is not what I am worried about right now. If the party nominates someone who has to accept matching funds in the primary race, money does become a concern, because that really hampers your ability to spend money on Ads from the end of the primaries up through the start of the general. It was no accident that the Kerry campaign couldn't go on the air when the Swift Vets first appeared in April/May with any sort of counter-charge. He'd accepting matching funds in the Primary campaign because of his laggard fundraising, and therefore he couldn't spend anything else on ads in most states without breaking the law. If you have limits on what you can spend, it doesn't matter how much you bring in.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 08:55 AM) We should be doing everything in our power to stockpile good minor leaguers. Our minor league development needs to prepare them for the majors or at least make some of them appealing for other teams. At some level, especially with some of these higher risk guys we've picked up, the way to do that is to make sure they get playing time, either in AAA or in the big leagues. Guys like Floyd, Owens, Quentin, Gio, Anderson, guys who people have some sort of concern with either due to injuries or lagging perfomance...the way to make them appealing for other teams is to play them. Right now, people wouldn't give up much for Floyd, but if he had a good first half, bam. Right now people look at Owens as a scrub, but if by some chance he hit .300 for a half season and stole 35 bases, suddenly he's in the good Juan Pierre territory. Right now Anderson is a scrub we want to dump, but a half year of solid hitting by him and suddenly his value could go back up. It's not going to happen to all of them, but if the goal is to rebuild, then playing these guys and not wasting ridiculous sums of money on guys like Rowand is the way to do that rebuilding the quickest.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 08:51 AM) K, that's a bullpen arm and a 200 inning starter for 2009 gone for a 2Bman whose entire offensive game depends upon his average. If he hits .270, he's a bad player. I could, and have been saying the exact same thing about a guy that this page seems to overwhelmingly want to give 4/$55 to.

QUOTE(Colorado Sox Fan @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 08:48 AM) Outbid the cubs on this one. Get Fuku. Put him in left. Get ARow. Put him in center. And bench that talentless fool Quentin.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 10, 2007 -> 04:32 PM) So its going to be Huckleberry Hound... Yick. He's still behind in N.H., and he might not play well with the type of people there. A win by someone else tosses everything wide open, and there's only like 3 days between NH and Iowa this year, so momentum is certainly going to behave differently from last year. And, there's always the potential issue of him simply not having enough money to compete in a national race before super Tuesday. He'd only have 1 month to bring in cash based on his Iowa win, and even less time to spend it. He actually might wind up relying a lot on matching funds (which, if he did, would only help the Dems and him, because he might be stuck in the same boat as Kerry in 04, unable to go on the air for 3 months).

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Dec 10, 2007 -> 05:31 PM) With some guy named Chris Carter #8.... They'd rank 3, 4 in the Sox system. If Quentin and Richar qualified, they'd probably be between 2-4 in our system (depending on where they rank Gio and DLS)

Sox looking at Fukudome, Bay, not Rowand

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Dec 10, 2007 -> 05:18 PM) Since we are talking pitchers here...any chance the Sox will look at Masset as a possible starter? Or will he be back in the pen...I believe he is out of options right? I'd say there's a "Chance" in the sense that if they have to choose, I think they'll carry 12 pitchers with Masset as the last, long man out of the Pen just to try to hold onto both of them, and if he shows anything quality while in the pen, and Floyd/Danks/Contreras implode, he might get a shot then. I think that since they had all these guys last year, they'll probably weight their performance in the big leagues higher than their ST performance, so someone might have to get hurt for Masset to have a starting shot.
