Oh no, not only do we have another missing white woman, this one's even named "Peterson". And of course, front and center on CNN.com. Must be sweeps month.

QUOTE(rockren @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 01:21 PM) Eh don't act as if I'm overreacting. I understand that patience is a good thing, however KW isn't fooling anybody and I fear him waiting too long. When has KW ever waited too long on a deal he wanted to do or a guy he wanted to sign & lost out because of it? If anything, a lot more people have criticized him for jumping the gun on deals. Not waiting to see if we could get Vazquez for a lower price, or not waiting more to see if we could get more for Garcia, etc. KW sets a price and when it gets met, he pull the trigger, he doesn't wait for the highest deal if his price has been met.

If Fields will not play LF next year...then Crede has to go.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 11:34 AM) I'd like to send Garland to another team in the NL such as the Mets etc and bring back at least 2 spects that we may be able to package somewhere else. IMO, if the biggest weakness on this team right now is the weakness in our minor leagues and lack of impact guys coming up...with the way the current market stands, it might well be a mistake to trade a guy like Garland for youth and then move that youth...just because our system doesn't have any. That said, I think I've argued for both sides here...that maybe Cabrera could be had for less than we think because of team's reluctance to give away prospects, but that the White Sox would also be smart to hold onto anyone they can get, for different reasons, so I don't know why I'm still talking. Blah blah blah blah, I'm going to the gym. Go bulls.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 10:56 AM) Is it normal for people with HIV to live as long as he has now? Or is this a case of what money can do for you? In this country, yes. If you have decent insurance that doesn't cut you off or the money to pay for the drugs, there is no reason why you can't live an unbelievably long time. If you don't have the money or aren't well insured, then you're dead.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 10:51 AM) I think the key with cities in Cali is that they are actually semi-prepared for those events. I'm not saying you can properly prepare for that one really nasty one that destroys 10k buildings, but, I think the fact that California has been preparing for these things for so long will end up saving a lot of lives. People around the New Madrid are, I have found, either mostly or completely unaware of the danger they are in. Then there is the fact that any quake in California will likely have a much smaller range of effect than New Madrid because of the terrain. Now New York, I have no idea what if anything they've done to prepare for a major hurricane. One of the problems with the L.A. Basin is that while they've done some steps to prepare a response, there is one thing that they really can't do, and that's make all of these buildings that popped up during the building boom in the middle part of the century safe. Brick and mortar buildings just do a terrible job surviving seismic events, and in this city there are an awful lot of 3-10 story brick buildings where people work or live, and there just isn't enough money to start retrofitting them. IT would basically require rebuilding the city of Los Angeles, and there isn't money for that. So, as far as I can tell, the area has just decided, without really saying it, to wait for the buildings to be demolished for free (saving a large portion of the cost!) and for the Feds to wind up having to foot the bill for rebuilding the city.

QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 10:42 AM) Rolen is sooooo 4 years ago. He still seems very productive...on the rare occasion when some injury isn't bothering him.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 10:34 AM) Yellowstone shouldn't be this country's biggest worry for a geological disaster. The one that the country is least prepared for, and which is in fact overdue and semi-imminent (if anything geological can be called imminent), and which is likely to do the most damage (of those events that are likely), is New Madrid. It won't do as much as that supervolcano of course, but its not a 1 in 1000 shot in the next century - its a 800 in 1000 shot that there will be a significant quake there in this century. You know what? Right now, I can actually think of a couple that might hurt more than New Madrid going again. A Category 2 hurricane hitting New York comes to mind, which is entirely possible any one of these years. Both the S.F. and L.A. areas are due for a couple of major quakes out here also. And then there's the Levees around Sacramento; basically that city is protected from a series of rivers by some earthen levees that date back to the 1870's, and we're only just now starting to repair them, so a big storm up in the Sierras could quite literally turn it into NOLA. And there's also a tsunamigenic fault, capable of a Sumatra scale event, sitting off the Oregon and Washington coast that hasn't gone in a couple hundred years (it's recurrence interval seems to vary between 100 and 1000 years, so we don't really have a clue when it will go again) Of course, I think 5 years ago someone made a list of the top few potential natural disasters to hit the U.S., and the inundation of NOLA was about #2 on the list following up a magnitude 7+ event in the L.A. Basin. (You hit the right fault out here and you literally destroy 10,000 buildings.)

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 10:14 AM) So burying the food producing plains states is any better? Also, what were the odds of a 9.3 earthquake in the Indian Ocean causing a tsunami that would kill 250,000 people? Just because something isn't likely, doesn't mean we shouldn't be aware of it. I'd say that the odds of that happening, if you give me a 100 year timespan with no preparation, approach 100%. That subduction zone produces on average several events of nearly that magnitude, some of them tsunamigenic, every 100 years.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 10:01 AM) Saying he will "re-commit" resources is no better than saying keep the status quo. I know, but you have to figure whoever is actually responding to policy emails for the campaign is going to take their material from their issues page as a start for anything.

Despite the Boras factor, I think we all might take a moment and think about how this would be one of those classic KW moves. Everyone thinks his #1 target is Hunter. Everyone thinks he doesn't want to deal with Boras. Then suddenly, we hear KW has made a move, it's a move no one expected, and it just so happens to bring the Sox a guy that KW had tried to acquire in the past.
-
Just FYI, it's a bit buried and lacking specifics, but this is sort of what his "Issues" page brings up on the Transit issue.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 09:53 AM) If Jones is really 5-80, as Heyman suggest today, you sign him. I think I agree on this one. If Hunter and Jones cost roughly the same amount, Jones is probably the right choice, given the ages.

If Josh Fields is not going to be playing LF next year...then we will be signing a CF. And I really don't know which one will be the best option until we see the deals everyone gets. It's entirely possible that the sheer number of quality guys on the market could force prices down at this position. Because there are an awful lot of CF's out there right now.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 08:59 AM) I wouldnt worry about the Ash hitting Chicago. The reason that map looks like that is that the direction of ash fall is a very strong function of the wind direction on the days of the eruption.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 08:09 AM) I have said it before, and I will say it again. If you REALLY want to get people out of their cars, you HAVE to give them an alternative mode of transportation. The decay of the Chicago mass transit system, and the neglect of mass transit in the US is a joke. It sends the message that all of the talk about going green, is just talk. The federal government spends, IIRC (too lazy to check actual numbers) something like $40 billion a year on upkeep of the roads and around $1 billion or so on Mass Transit.

QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 09:13 AM) Soriano. Latin American players try and lie about their age quite often. Beltre and Furcal as two examples. That's who I thought...but the way it was phrased it at least sounded like a slap against Hunter, which confused me.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 09:17 PM) He's listed as 1 year younger. Which one are you alleging is older than listed?

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 08:42 AM) Yes, Fields would most likely be included in any trade, unless they would take Crede and half of our minor league system. Oh and we would have to pay Crede's salary. LOL, if they'd take Crede as opposed to Fields...I think they could hold a bake sale for the fans and come up with enough money to cover Crede's salary.

This does not just mean that Josh is done in LF. This also means we're signing a CF. 100% guaranteed. Because if Josh is not a LF...if we're prepared to put him in AAA as opposed to LF...then our OF is Owens, Anderson/Sweeney, Dye. And I simply can't fathom KW right now thinking that Anderson or Sweeney will be ready to handle CF on opening day.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 07:47 AM) I have a question... Would signing Mark Loretta make too much sense? 2 points. 1. Yes it would. 2. I really hope we don't do it. I just think that next year, we're going to live and die by the quality of the kids we have. Fields, Richar, Wasserman, Logan, possibly Owens. It makes a lot of sense to sign a guy to platoon with each of them, but if they'r enot good enough to play on their own, without a platoon partner, then I don't think we're going anywhere anyway, and I'd rather the kids get the AB's to develop. If you want a platoon partner, find one for Uribe.

Some damn fine numbers put up by TT tonight. Double Double in the 3rd quarter. Career high 14 boards. Skiles had TT and Smith on the court as his 2 bigs down the stretch.

A lot of teams that aren't the Yankees look like a mess until a couple guys step up.
