  1. QUOTE(Texsox @ May 2, 2007 -> 09:21 AM) They were state subsidized, have they stopped that? The subsidies were slightly altered in 1999, first. Last year, the price on them rose 15% or so in Mexico City. The new government recently instituted new price controls on top of the older ones to try to combat the price increase.
  2. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 2, 2007 -> 08:03 AM) Holy s***! So much for the myth of "law abiding" I had no idea the #s were this high. So, I have some problems with that number, but given that it seems like a very odd number, I'm not exactly sure how to interpret it. Couple of points: First, here's exactly what Malkin says: "foreign-born individuals admitted to state correctional facilities and local jails during the year for committing crimes in the U.S." I'm not exactly sure what all that includes honestly. She doesn't say anything about being convicted of a crime, she doesn't say what sort of crimes are being included. It could very well be that she's picked out her number in such a way as to make things look as bad as humanly possible, i.e. by including the 200,000+ folks picked up solely on immigration violations, or including people who are picked up but never charged with anything. Secondly, if we assume there are roungly 12 million illegal immigrants in this country, that gives a rate of 5.4% If you assume the other end of the estimates, 20 million, that comes to 3.25%. According to the U.S. Census bureau, the U.S. prison population may rise to 7.7 million, or 3.4% of the population, by 2010. Amongst the African American population, for example, the rate is even higher, although for some reason I can't seem to find the data I want using Google. I'm amazed and frustrated. And beyond that, this number clashes with other number sthat have been recently published. Citing a study from about 2 months ago: To my eyes, this number just doesn't pass the smell test. It seems like something has been done to artificially inflate it to make it look as bad as humanly possible, without giving appropriate explanation of where it actually comes from.
  3. The exploding price of corn tortillas has become a major political issue in Mexico.
  4. QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 2, 2007 -> 08:46 AM) Remember, Terrero did homer yesterday. That could earn him a few starts in a row. Only against left handers, I'm sure. Just keep freaking Ryan Sweeney in the lineup. Every bloody day. PLatoon Terrero with Erstad, but keep Sweeney in the bloody lineup.
  5. We really need to find a way to get him and Richard Gere in a room.
  6. QUOTE(Jimbo @ May 2, 2007 -> 07:13 AM) They will have Clemens in no time. Why would Roger want to come back and help this team go from last place to 3rd place? IF he wants to win, he's not coming back until the Yankees show him something first.
  7. I think it's time we demote Brian Anderson to AA so that he can get some at bats.
  8. QUOTE(Jimbo @ May 2, 2007 -> 08:27 AM) Until Danks has a complete meltdown when he is 0-18, because his team has given him 10 combine runs in 25 starts. If Bonderman and Maroth can get past the 03 Tigers...
  9. QUOTE(fathom @ May 1, 2007 -> 07:45 PM) I'd be happy if he could come up here and hit well. I'd rather see him in LF tonight than Mackowiak though. I wouldn't care where he was playing...just still want Sweeney in the lineup. You know, there was a time when Rob Mackowiak was considered a utility guy and not a backup OF.
  10. Terrero just guaranteed himself 40+ at bats this month.
  11. QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ May 1, 2007 -> 07:39 PM) AKA... 2:35?? color me confused. 10:35 CST = 12:35 PST.
  12. QUOTE(winninguglyin83 @ May 1, 2007 -> 07:39 PM) for the record, just checked the Charlotte box score. BA must be surfing down south. not in the lineup. What's the rush, dude? makes me pull for terrero Give me 5 minutes...i'm going to go start the "BA to AA so he can get some playing time" club.
  13. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ May 1, 2007 -> 07:38 PM) weird...why wouldn't AJ play tomorrow and take tonight off against the lefty? Not sure, but i'm guessing the answer is "Gustavo Molina".
  14. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ May 1, 2007 -> 07:36 PM) We're going to have 9 (or how ever many there were) all stars one year followed by the 1 token guy that the team will be required to have. Sad. Right now, my money's on Aardsma. Buehrle and Vazquez both have decent shots, but need some help from their offenses.
  15. Last year, the Lakers had the suns on the ropes, but couldn't finish the Suns off in game 5. Suddenly the Suns found a little bit more confidence, and it was the Lakers on the defensive.
  16. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 1, 2007 -> 07:17 PM) He had to come out due to a strained hamstring. No hitter still alive for now. Well, excellent work all around by that organization.
  17. For either or both of them. I'll give the hard one I'm interested in and worried about. Recently, a number of White Sox prospects have had trouble adapting and fitting in at the big league levels. I.e. Brandon McCarthy, Brian Anderson, Sean Tracey, etc. Have you paid any attention to the situations involving these players, has the organization said anything to you about them, and have you any reaction to the way the organization has dealt with them?
  18. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ May 1, 2007 -> 06:23 PM) Exactly. It makes absolutely no f***ing sense. What a waste. But at least he hits Arbitration/FA earlier, so it's good for him.
  19. Why is Ryan Sweeney even on this team if he isn't playing? QUOTE(Brian @ May 1, 2007 -> 06:17 PM) Crede is obviously better defensively than Ozuna, so why not DH Pablo instead? To give Mr. Crede some rest?
  20. Mitt Romney's favorite novel? Battlefield Earth. Yes, that one.
  21. George Karl is benching JR Smith. Every so often, Pax looks like he knows what he's doing.
