QUOTE(Cknolls @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 09:00 AM) Did they lie about Wilson? Many, Many times. Every time they say that his wife had anything to do with him being sent to Niger, for example.

I'm actually starting to like Aaron Rowand less just because of all these people saying it'd be a good idea to trade for him. Yeesh.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 09:11 AM) Flash and Crash NO NO NO.

QUOTE(shawnhillegas @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 09:08 AM) yes but you have to be concerned about injury. if anything happens and we dont have bmac, we are in big trouble We do have backup options still at AAA. I know Haeger's 1st start wasn't anything to write home about, but if anything did happen to one of our innings-eaters, the guy's ready for a callup. He'd be in the rotation on probably more than 1/2 of the teams in the big leagues right now.

Does anyone else sit here and think that a guy who pitches 200+ innings at around age 30 is more valuable than a guy who might pitch 70 inning and is around age 40, even considering contract disparities?

You know what's really sad? I started typing "Prior to the DL" in the topic title window, and all I had to do was copy from a previous entry. In other news, the sun came up today.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 08:54 AM) The Mets also got burned trading a phenom for a wash-up pitcher in 2004. Believe me, it will take more than Freddy Garcia to get Milledge away from the Mets, and if Milledge is available, there will be teams willing to part with pitchers more attractive than Garcia to acquire him. Well, about the only team I could see actually being able to say that might be the Nationals with Livan Hernandez, who interestingly enough has an ERA of about 6 in the NL this year. Maybe the Marlins with D-Train, but I think they'll still hold onto him as good as they've looked this year. Maybe the Braves with Smoltz, but they really don't have room for Milledge in their outfield with Francoeur. Look up and down the list...almost every team in contention needs pitching to make a run. Boston, NY, Toronto, Detroit, Minnesota, Texas, The Mets, the Cardinals, the Brewers, the Reds, the Padres, the Rockies, the Giants, all of them could use another starting pitcher. The only teams in contention with enough starting pitching on paper IMO are the A's, the Halos, maybe Houston, and the White Sox. And the A's and Halos are in no position to deal away starting pitching unless they're white flagging this whole season. The White Sox are about the only team who is in a position to give away a genuinely top of the rotation starting pitcher, as we have BMac sitting around waiting. Everyone else needs pitching, and the teams at the bottom of the league, aside from Florida, don't have arms nearly as good as Vazquez/Garcia could be.

7/14 Game Thread: White Sox vs. Yankees

Starting pitching, it's time. Take this team to the promised land. -
QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 08:51 AM) Minaya wouldn't trade Milledge for Zito. Why would he trade him for 2 guys that are considerably worse than Zito? Well, first of all we don't know that he wouldn't make that deal and that it wasn't Billy Beane hesitating, but more importantly, the Mets are now closer to the playoffs than they were when Zito might have been available, and the Mets' starting pitching looks much shakier than it did 2 months ago as well, especially with Pedro looking banged up more, and Glavine falling back from the high he started the season on. In May, when Oakland was still struggling, Minaya might have been able to make himself believe he could get by with 2 starters. That looks much less likely today.

QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 08:31 AM) If we got Milledge, i wonder if we would trade him or bring him up and trade Anderson. Send Podsednik out, and guarantee us the best young outfield in the majors for the next 6 years.

Wait a second, broadcasters in Tennessee are talking about the White Sox? Who cares what they're saying, this is actually great news. Hate us all you want, just give us the damn coverage!

QUOTE(qwerty @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 12:52 AM) There are what 8 innings before ''close and late''?... that are just as important as risp. He has done his job with men on/risp perfectly fine... his trouble has been with no one on. I understand how people can say that winning games early by hitting with RISP and so on is going to be equally important, but personally I just can't say I believe it. Why? I'll point to ARod's double play in game 5 against the Angels last year as the prime example. What I think happens with guys like ARod is they beat up on mediocre pitching. This is why he's so much better with RISP...good pitchers allow fewer of those, so ARod's numbers go up a lot then, but he disappoints when he's faced with good pitching. Since closers tend to be pretty decent pitchers, and they make their appearances in close games, ARod's numbers drop then. ARod is a guy who beats up on mediocre pitching and generates you a lot of runs. But if you want him to key a championship run, he can't do it, because when he's faced with good pitching either down the stretch or in the playoffs, he shuts down. That's my theory at least.

Will the Local Media Shut Up about the Cubs
Balta1701 replied to SouthSidePride05's topic in The Diamond Club
Why would the local media "Shut up" about any team? As soon as the number of Cubs fans drops below 3, they might consider it, but until then, they're news. -

QUOTE(samclemens @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 08:06 AM) from what ive seen in this thread, and considering that there is a conservative court, my guess is the leaking will be found to be in the VP's executive capacity or something like that (rationalized as speaking to the press in an official capacity), and he'll be immune from this suit. to me, its a little different than an act completely outside the scope of your employment, like banging trailor trash a.k.a. paula jones (p.s. dissappointing penthouse photo shoot, paula; very dissappointing). thats my take, for what it's worth. My instincts tell me sam is right here, but also that sam isn't going to be proven right until this hits the Supreme Court in 2 years, and by that point, Cheney will be so close to out of office that it won't really matter.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 04:56 AM) Judging by the religious leanings of Iran's President I think you are probably on a better path here, except I think the purpose here would be to attempt to justify Iran's need for nuclear weapons (what a better time to announce that they have them, but when Israel is attacking people "for no reason") to defend themselves, and at the sametime protect their Islamic bretheran. Well, your logic would make sense, if it was not for 1 key fact: as far as everyone knows and believes, Iran is still multiple years away from a nuclear weapon. If they were close, then this concept would be believable, but right now, Iran doesn't have them, so they can't announce they have them. But if Iran doesn't have them, having Israel lash out randomly against groups that Iran has assisted is very risky for that country, as an Israeli strike against Iran would at the least likely delay their nuclear program (even if it would significantly strengthen their government). QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 06:59 AM) Well to be fair there is also a large difference between terrorist attacks, and some crappy rocket fire from the Palestian territories, and an invasion from another country. To be honest, I feel that Israel always has erred on the side of overreaction versus underreaction, and that is another reason that some of this has the feel of being coordinated vs just random in my eyes. On that you are correct. I think it's probably also worth pointing out that Hamas and Hezbollah on their own both have reasons to desire the Isreali over-response. Hamas in that it strengthens their government and its insistence on Isreal's demise, and Hezbollah in that the Israeli response totally destroys the momentum that was building since the last Lebanese elections which would have forced that group to begin disarming now that it had become a key part of the government.

QUOTE(CardsJimEdmonds15 @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 09:36 PM) Pujols continued his OWNAGE of Odalis Perez (10 for 15 with 5 HR's) and ended this game on a walkoff HR in the 14th.. Cool.. His 7th career walkoff! Ok, I think I know what happened. That ball collided in mid-air with the ball that Pujols hit off of Lidge last year. The collision knocked the Lidge ball downwards and into the crowd, and knocked tonight's ball straight up, propelling it into a higher orbit. Soon, MLB will realize there's potential for profit here, and will market balls being pitched to Pujols as a means of launching new communications satellites at low cost.

Ok starting pitchers, a lot of you acted like kids in the first half. It's crunch time now. We have the best damn starting rotation in baseball on paper. It's time to pitch like it. That goes for all 5 of you. Each and every one of you is capable of performing quite a bit better in the next 3 months. No more relying on the offense to carry you, get out and do your jobs, and the rest of baseball will be absolutely terrified to face this team.

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 07:48 PM) thats definately a fair assesment. the earlier article seemed to use a lot of hear-say, even if some of it is true the guy was a kid when most of the stuff happened. not so sure i would write an article like that about someone who's 17 or 18 and grown up in a situation like that. And in 20 years...he can run for President!

QUOTE(Keystone @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 09:01 PM) Good. One of my friends is a Red Sox fan and he cant stop talking about Papelbon, its pretty annoying. Ill admit Papelbon is good but at least now I can say Jenks is better because of this award. (even though he isnt) Saves blown this season by Papelbon: 3 Saves blown this season by Jenks: 1

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 07:10 PM) *cough*7.5mill in 06*cough* *cough*6.5mill in 07*cough* So we'd be paying rougly 1/2 of Vazquez's contract? Hmmm, if they gave us Milledge, you know, I just might still pull that trigger.

Sadly, I'm not sure either of those are actually right, but out of the 2, the one which makes more sense is Nuke's. Why? Because it's not Israel's fault that other groups decided to take their soldiers hostage. Anywho, I don't think any of those are really true personally. Seems more like these are local/regional groups which found the opportunity to grab people and did so, not some grand conspiracy to gain supremacy. Way too much to risk on the part of either one. Iran would take no action until they actually had the bomb if they were rushing ahead on a bomb program, as they'd have nothing for defense without it, and Israel is risking the lives of a great many of its people, and possibly its own survival, if this operation goes forwards more. Anyway, this mess seems to be getting worse by the hour. Maybe I should wait on buying that first car I was thinking about buying until I know it won't cost me $5/gal.
