Owners would like to delay season until vaccine
Balta1701 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Yes. that is almost certainly why there will be a delay in the season. There just won't be enough people vaccinated to allow 40,000 people in the stands on opening day, and if MLB starts knowingly letting unvaccinated people in there liability could easily increase compared to this year. -
Owners would like to delay season until vaccine
Balta1701 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
At this point, yes. This disease is a disaster. It isn't ideal that we can't wait, but given the choice between waiting and the current nightmare? If MLB wants an excuse to shorten their season, I'm not going to look at it as a bad thing. Literally as you said above, ballparks shouldn't be open until people have had the vaccine broadly. People shouldn't be gathering at bars and restaurants to watch games. If baseball waits until they can get all their people covered at least, it improves safety for literally everyone. And yes, the owners save money. -

Honestly, some version of “you can’t go to a baseball or basketball game unless you have had the vaccine and all our players who can will do it in a public event on May 1” as a way to push the population to get it, that isn’t a bad strategy. It’s not the government pushing it but a private organization, there’s a reward even if it is “getting to spend money”, and there’s a good press day involved for everyone. -
Sox acquire Lance Lynn for Dane Dunning and Avery Weems

Who else did we prefer? Cease or Rodon? -
Hmph. “The only poll that can possibly count is the one that confirms my bias and if you present any other polls that disagree I will not evaluate them at all”.

1. You said I would prefer banning the less dangerous rifle because I didn't know anything about guns, then played a trick where you named two types of ammunition different from the preferred round of mass shooters, and I wasn't willing to waste my time on your game. 2. I have no issue with redesigning an assault weapons ban to be smarter than the 1994 one. However, one cannot help but note how the mass shootings involving something that could be classified as an assault weapon...rose after the weak AWB expired. https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2019/aug/07/bill-clinton/did-mass-shooting-deaths-fall-under-1994-assault-w/ 3. It is not people like me, who will say that I believe responsible gun ownership to be a myth, who are the reason why gun laws are being loosened constantly. I would have been quite happy with intelligent gun laws being passed and would only push for additional legislation when that did not work. It is gun owners who go along with the NRA and their most extreme positions that are the ones who prevent any gun legislation at all.

I never said they were. I didn't care about the ones you brought up, I cared about the 27 murdered kids and teachers in Newtown that were killed by that bullet. So waste your time with your pictures and quizzes of the other ones. I didn't mistake what you were typing for a .22 LR, I found your examples to be a waste of time because you didn't focus on the bullet causing these mass shootings. I focused on the .223 because there was a whole classroom of kids killed by it and your distraction is less important to me than those bodies. At some point, one notices that a single bullet type keeps being the preferred mass shooting one, and then you ignored that bullet when you ask about the one I'm supposed to ID. Which is how it proves my point. I lived down the street from the Pittsburgh synagogue for 2 years. Same damn bullet. So why didn't I care about your example? Because that wasn't the bullet killing my neighbors.
-
No, but a .223 was used to murder 27 schoolkids in Newtown and 17 at Stoneman-Douglas high school, and you didn't bother bringing that one up. Which pretty much proves my point too.
-
I mean a .30-06 (and tbh no I didn’t know how to type that only how to say it) is a huge bullet with killing power at long distances, but it’s not the kind of carnage weapon where you walk into a school and kill 20+ kids, those bullets would fly right through them. The trick with a .223 is that once it enters a body the bullet doesn’t fly in a straight line, it tumbles over dumping far more energy into the flesh of the 10 year old victim as it tears apart their insides. That’s why it’s an excellent design for a military field rifle because you hit your target at a reasonable range and they’re down, but your average school isn’t the place those were built for, just a perfect spot for them.

I mean this one I had in 2019. Sign Kole Calhoun. His contract was $16 million for 20-21. We have now spent $13 million on RF for those same 2 years (discounted in 20) and given up Steele Walker and in 2020 our production out in RF was S*** while Calhoun could have hit 5th after Abreu and been 2nd on our team in home runs. Extend McCann, spend the same money already spent on RF, keep Steele Walker, and our team is cheaper, better, and just needs a backup catcher (could have been Narvaez but that’s another rant).
-
No, it’s not because I don’t trust gun fetishists that 2 years from now gun laws will be weaker than they are today.
-
Thanks for stereotyping.

I never said I wouldn’t agree to a middle position. I would fully support one. I have zero issues with compromise and believe it’s a good thing when we find compromises that help people. “Do not let the perfect be the enemy of the good” is a strong motto in politics. Does not change my feelings about the gun culture in this country. Does not have to.

If Grandal is a top 5 catcher and is being paid top 3, catcher money, and McCann is a top 8 catcher being paid top 6 money, that extra $30 million could make a big difference for us. Minor downgrade in the catching spot (with happier pitchers apparently), but Hendricks closing out games. This is the point where all the money we wasted in the past 2 years is adding up, it’s Eaton in RF instead of a better option, and Grandal is an example of a place where we spent more than we needed and could have used the money more wisely.
-
I would be very surprised and impressed if something like what you said happened to these 126 reps, and fully endorse that as a compromise. All I ask is...what do you do when none of that happens and they get off 100% Scot free? I can confidently say I won’t be voting for a GOP representative next election, but will you be? Also, I was a lot closer to Crenshaws district in the past election than to any in IL.

Im too mean to gun fetishists so we can’t have gun laws. Somehow I don’t think this is actually my fault.

Every single one of those is a policy disagreement. I disagree with anyone having guns, I don't trust the judgment of anyone who does. The Iraq war was absolute idiocy and everyone who supported it should be ashamed of themselves, look at the multi decade mess it created. But you know what none of those are? An effort that would invalidate democracy. Had this case succeeded, it would literally, to the letter, have done that. This is not a policy disagreement any more - this is saying that if you disagree with me, you do not count and you should not be allowed to vote. If no actions are taken in response to this, and things get worse, things go to a very bad place. You brought him up, so this attempted smear of a navy intelligence officer who was sexually harassed at a VA facility has led to literally every veterans organization calling for the resignation of the secretary of veterans affairs today, and Crenshaw happily joined in the smear. That should follow him as he wanders through his incredibly gerrymandered district. https://www.salon.com/2020/12/11/trumps-va-secretary-worked-with-gop-rep-dan-crenshaw-to-smear-vet-who-alleged-sexual-assault-ig/

In an offseason where we're signing Adam Eaton to be our RF, the $34 million difference in those contracts matters too. I feel like Grandal is the $100k rims off a Bugatti, and Eaton is the salvaged 1983 Yugo engine you just hope runs enough to get across town.
-
Obviously they didn't. Grandal was their #1 target last offseason. They went out and signed him as the first big signing of the whole winter. There was 0 chance they were going to pay Grandal $18 million per year and then offer McCann an extension at the same time - they bought into the "McCann won't be able to do that again" thinking last offseason, and signed Grandal as a consequence.
-
If you had put 3/$24 on the table for him after 2019 I can’t imagine him turning it down.
-
But you see, right now we are discussing a binary choice. Donald Trump legally lost this election. By 8 million votes and by the electoral college. 126 Congressional Republicans and 17 state level Republican groups would like to say that result is unacceptable, and if people did not vote the way they wanted those votes should not count, votes only count if they vote for Trump. That is not democracy. Should we declare that because the results did not support Trump, we should overturn democracy and keep him as leader anyway? There is no creative middle ground, either the election mattered or it did not. If you have some creative plan for Trump to be a co president, or to have him stay on and conduct a plebiscite in 2 years to verify his rule, you have sided against democracy.

Sox sign Adam Eaton 1 year, $7m plus option
Balta1701 replied to Greek-konerko's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Except he also had the injury prone label when coming to the White Sox and we were surprised at the time that he stayed moderately healthy for 3 years. The fact that he was banged up and played fewer than 100 games in 2013 is one reason why the DBacks were willing to move him at the time (the other was his personality issues). -
Old: Mega Hendriks Speculation Thread
Balta1701 replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
For a team with world series aspirations? Yeah. That's underwhelming. When the Yankees think they need help they sign Cole. When the Dodgers do, they trade for Betts. When the Nats did, they signed Corbin. When the Red Sox were ready, they traded for Sale and signed JD Martinez at his peak. When the Astros thought they were ready, they signed Reddick, Beltran, and eventually traded for Verlander. When the Cubs were ready, they signed Heyward, Zobrist, and traded for Chapman. -

And since they're now fighting it out publicly without the input of a key person it's clear...the manager isn't one of them.
