  1. Depends on the girlfriend...whether or not she understands the rules, whether or not she can figure out when she shouldn't be cheering (my fiance let out a "Come on White Sox" right after BMac's balk on Monday), etc. Sometimes you have to sort of nursemaid them into it.
  2. Because of the way the question was phrased...who is the "Best" offensive player, the only answer that is possible right now is Paul Konerko. Right now, Konerko is 15th in the big leagues with 52 RBI's. No one else on the Sox is even in the top 30. Konerko also leads the team in runs scored, with 44...Pods is a close 2nd at 42, but the same guy is leading in runs scored and RBI's. Now, on top of that, this is not even the first year for Paulie to lead the team in the 2 main offensive categories; he was 10th in baseball last year with 117 RBI's, and 3rd on the team with 84 runs scored (although both Podsednik and Dye scored more runs last year.) If the question was "Who is the most valuable offensive player"...that's a much different question, because it takes into account speed, timely hitting, etc, and Everett, Rowand and Pods become factors, but in terms of simply who the best offensive player is, it's hard not to say it's the guy leading the team in runs scored and driven in.
  3. The Mets had an interesting record tonight. Against the Yankees, the Mets became the first team in NL history to record 3 sacrifice flies in the same inning. Yes you read that right, 3 in 1 inning. Bernie Williams dropped a fly ball, was counted for an error, but it still counted as a sac fly.
  4. The AP recap of the game today (if you can even call it that) contains this little blurb about Uribe that I thought should be pointed out. Hopefully the rest will be good for Juan anyway...he needs something to get his swing shortened.
  5. QUOTE(ScottPodRulez22 @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 06:04 PM) :headshake I hope note. In other news ajp is 6-9 lifetime off of greg maddux. With any luck that gives us a guarantee that Widger won't be told to catch Contreras tomorrow. The guy Timo has always hurt that you might be remembering is Brad Radke from the Twins...Timo's also had an excellent career against Radke, Ozzie played him in that game, and Timo hit quite well, including another long ball.
  6. Putin doesn't need to give it to them. Any reactors that Russia has sold to Iran are pretty much just a drop in the bucket. Iran has large deposits of Uranium that are available to mine, and because our army is totally tied down in Iraq, they've been given a couple of free years to go and build enough equipment to process it into highly enriched forms. They've also received technology from Pakistan that could have been useful in this process as well.
  7. I just checked...no Timo did not face Maddux when he pitched against us earlier this year...he was 8 for 19 against him coming into that game. I think I was surprised he didn't face him.
  8. QUOTE(Antonio Osuna @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 04:12 PM) I'd rather win 12-4 and then have a strong bullpen available tomorrow than win 12-2 and have a short outing from Contreras force us to have to use a tired or questionable reliever in a close game tomorrow. We'd be in more trouble tomorrow if it were a close game and Cotts came out rusty from not having worked in 6 days that we are after him having worked an inning today.
  9. Actually, Walmart's prices as a whole really aren't that low at all.
  10. 28 God damned games over .500, and it's June 24th. 8 game winning streak. 3-1 this season against the Cubs - its now impossible for the Cubs to finish this season with a winning record against the Sox. Twinkies currently 10 games back. Winning percentage is .6944 - if we sweep this series, we'll be back above .700.
  11. I hate to keep pointing this out, but if you ignore May, Joe Crede is having a fine year. He had 1 terrible month. If it weren't for May, he'd be a .300 hitter right now. He's still swinging and missing too much right now, but he's not flying open like he was in May; he's keeping his head down and driving the ball, which is exactly what he should be doing. If we can figure out a way to cut donw on his strikeouts, he could turn himself into an All star pretty quick.
  12. Cotts hadn't pitched since going 2.1 innings on Monday after BMac's outing, Shingo and Marte both got time in before the offday. Usually with a reliever, the longer they sit, the more rusty they are when they come out. I can't find a problem with using Cotts for an inning tonight, and I'm not surprised that he had a little rust on him. I'll live with 12-2 wins over the Cubs any day of the week.
  13. A.J. Pierzynski has just tied his career high in home runs with 11. You think he likes that ballpark he's hitting in?
  14. Come on Crede...just put the ball in play & hope it gets through...just don't strike out.
  15. Frank Thomas has now tied Luke Appling for most runs scored in White Sox franchise history.
  16. Let's go Freddie...let's make us first to 50 wins today.
  17. QUOTE(Yossarian @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 10:29 AM) Upon further review of those attendance stats, we're now above 60% of capacity and that is sure to improve, no matter how the team does the rest of the year. We're making steady progress, but people cling to old and outdated stereotypes. On other notes, Cleveland has fallen off a cliff haven't they? It wasn't that long ago when they had a gazillion or so straight sell outs. How long can the Devil Rays keep up the charade that they are a major league team?. Some minor league teams probably outdraw them. OK, back to your regularly scheduled programming. Didn't mean to hijack this. The Devil Rays are basically the 2nd most profitable team in baseball. We're really sure to improve, because not only do we have the Cubs series, we have multiple series with Minnesota, We're probably going to see the return of Ordonez to the Cell at some point this year, and we have yet to host either the Yankees or the Red Sox.
  18. I don't see this posted anywhere...but there's an update on this story...it seems PBS escaped the knife in the House. Via the LAT
  19. Found it! I found the article I was looking for all day yesterday...on how a pitcher's ERA changes on average when he moves from league to league. It's basically exactly what I said...from CNNSI
  20. QUOTE(sti3 @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 09:38 AM) Fact is if you want to sell a magazine or a website, whom do you put on the cover? Besides Willis' ERA is half of Garland's. Willis also pitches in the national league, where he gets the benefit of not having to face any DHs and gets a nearly automatic out 1 time per order in the pitcher's slot. That knocks roughly 1 run off of a person's ERA. Ah-HA!!!!!!!!!!! I found the piece I was looking for about how a person's ERA usually changes when they swap leagues. From CNNSI Going from the AL to the NL on average causes a pitcher's ERA to drop by .95 runs. Going from the NL from the AL on average causes a pitcher's ERA to go up by .93 runs. I say that from now on...if you're going to compare ERA's between leagues, a "National League ERA adjustment" of .94 should be added to the numbers for the NL pitcher, or subtracted from the AL pitcher.
  21. QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 09:44 AM) I just heard on the radio that Ozuna is starting at short today I like it Guess that means Uribe is still sore...Sun Times quoted Ozzie saying he wanted Juan to play today. Hope this isn't something too nagging for Uribe.
  22. With any luck, the government will finally make something of either the Balco case or his tax case and that won't even be an option.
  23. People who come to mind instantly also include Nolan Ryan and Kyle Farnsworth... Barry Bonds - he'd be chemically angry.
