QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 6, 2018 -> 09:59 AM) You give money back to the poor and working class and it always moves up hill to business owners. Give money to the rich and hope if flows down hill. It seems like letting the working folks touch the money for a moment isn't such a bad thing. I would love to have a law that when taxes are lowered they must list a corresponding list of true cuts in spending. AND When adding an expense, either the tax increase to pay for it, or again the actual spending cut that is happening to pay for it. FWIW, this would totally sabotage the government's ability to respond to a 2008-like economy wide implosion.

QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Jan 6, 2018 -> 01:41 PM) Well, Jerry Lewis was considered by some to be a genius, and you could find footage of him doing similar stuff. Anyone else wake up every day and check the news just to see what crazy stuff Trump might have done while you were sleeping? It's like when I check my youngest son's grades - a mixture of apprehension and hope for the best. Fortunately, I feel like I can eventually have some influence on my son. The president, not so much. No I don't. Frankly I don't usually want to know. I only am scared over whether or not he'll actually kill anyone this week. Until then, all he's done so far is give me a 3 year tax cut in exchange for a much larger tax increase in 5 years, make my air worse, and potentially make it impossible to buy health care if I lose my job. Next on the list that affects me will likely be allowing a year or two of fraud of the sort that triggered the 2001 and 2008 economic meltdowns in the financial industry, but the bill for that doesn't come due until the federal reserve cranks interest rates up more.

White Sox acquire Joakim Soria, Luis Avilan and $3 Million

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 6, 2018 -> 12:17 AM) What you guys are telling me is you didn't want me to shed some light on the fact KC fans wanted to run Soria out of town last season and blamed him for everything. I should have stifled myself I guess. Everybody from little kids to little ol ladies wanted to run Soria out of Kansas City. I enjoy reading all the stats in these threads. I guess you'll just have to wait and see. Again it doesn't matter cause we are a 60ish win team again so let Soria pitch all he wants. Those of you who root for losses will enjoy seeing him serve up meat ... UNLESS Mr. Coop works magic. ... I'll stop now. But you have to admit you can do a lot of things with stats and apologists have really been trying their best to support Jack with stats in this thread. So basically, either he improves our draft pick or he is actually fixed by Cooper and becomes a useful, tradeable asset. You have just outlined how this is a win/win. And we got an extra lefty! And you save $15 a month! DUDE! -
40 Man at 39, what do you do with the last spot?
Balta1701 replied to Dunt's topic in Pale Hose Talk
They clearly still need a starting pitcher, but the FA market hasn't shaped up at all yet. Until the fairly big names out there move, it's impossible to fill the role that we need to fill. -
QUOTE (pablo @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 02:09 PM) You could probably buy him at his low point right now, right? I'd imagine Indians would be looking for big league help and they could likely use an OF. Would you do an Avi for Salazar deal? Hope to get Salazar right and if so either extend him or trade him. If Salazar got healthy and good, he'd probably bring back more than Avi in a deadline deal. I think if the price was prospects, I'd have to pass on anything in our top 10-12. Given that Salazar is at his low point and Avi is at his high point I'd probably look for 1 more piece coming back, like whoever the Indians drafted in the 3rd round last year or something like that, but on paper that's a reasonable match. Gets us several years of control out of it.

Alec Hansen: The most underrated player in MiLB?

QUOTE (KnightsOnMintSt @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 12:52 PM) I dont want the White Sox to rush Hansen, but I could see him being one of those guys that really forces his way to the big leagues, quickly. Barring injury, I'd be surprised if he didn't make a 2019 appearance. He's one of the reasons I think we're a 100 win team on paper in 2020. -
The head of Intel was informed of the 2 major security flaws announced this week sometime last year. Intel lost $10+ billion in stock value this week due to this release. Their CEO "revised his trading strategy" in early October and he was able to sell off $39 million of their stock in November. He now only holds whatever the minimum amount of stock is that a person in that job is required to hold. I'm sure these are totally unrelated just like in the Equifax case. I'm also equally sure about the likelihood of consequences if they were related.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 10:41 AM) I will always remember that one game against Greg's Royals when if he had not pitched, his ERA would have been about over a run lower. The 2 things I will remember for him are how every year right before he imploded for 2 weeks there was a "David Robertson Appreciation Thread" or something like that posted here, and how in 2015 his implosion was entirely "Josh Donaldson". -
Fake Rumor: White Sox and Moustakas "Close" on Deal.
Balta1701 replied to KnightsOnMintSt's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (WBWSF @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 11:35 AM) 1) Does anybody really think that the White Sox are going to out spend the other teams in signing Machado next year? 2) Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to sign Moustakas?. 3) Is there anybody who wouldn't want to see a 2018 White Sox infield of Moustakas, Anderson. Moncado and Abreu? 1. Yes. 2. No - it isn't cheap to sign guys who aren't that good. You pay a lower overall price, but you wind up like the 2015 and 2016 white sox - expensive and crappy. 3. Yes, would much rather see Sanchez at 3b. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 11:12 AM) On the other hand if bullpen prices continue to climb cease could be just as valuable in bullpen. I will never think that your bullpen will be "Just as valuable" as your starters. 1/2 as valuable maybe. Teams are paying $15 million for a top of the line reliever right now and $30 million a year for a top of the line starter. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 10:51 AM) I think people should quit giving Greg much crap about Soria. If he were so great, KC wouldn't have had to give up Alexander to get rid of the contract. Alexander might be a flash in the pan, Kelly Wunsch style, but he had some value. There's a pretty good chance the guy sucks, but from a White Sox point of view it makes sense to eat the money and gain at least another reliever as the paychecks for bullpen arms are rising very quickly. Isn't your 3rd paragraph doing exactly what you say people should quit doing in the first? -
2018 better or another chase for the first overall pick?

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 10:52 AM) I expect Kopech up this year and maybe Eloy... although I could see him up next year along with Hansen + others. Unless they're trading Abreu and/or Avi early, and the young guys take a step back or disappoint entirely (or if they bring back Holland and pitch both he and Covey every 5th day) I don't think they'll be THAT bad. I will bet you that Eloy Jiminez will not let you keep him in the minors. His numbers will be too good. -

Balta1701 replied to Dominikk85's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Unless Abreu and Garcia are traded I expect them to be a few games better this year, somewhere in the low 70s would be my guess. If those 2 are moved, they could very well contend for the #1 pick again. Kopech and Eloy will not let you delay them. Anybody else getting called up I could consider them being rushed. Those 2 are going to leave a trail of shattered minor leaguers in their wake until they reach the bigs. They are better. I don't like guys being called up too early, and aside from "The extra year of control" they'll get by starting in the minors to open the year, I don't like guys being kept down if they earn their callup. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 07:49 PM) I tend to agree with you. I thin he is pretty much done. He kept the ball in the park last year, but if he reverts to his 2016 form, it will be souvenir time in the bleachers. But worth the flier getting the lefty. if he reverts to his 2016 form, then it improves our draft pick. At the very least, this gets us out of the "no one in the bullpen knows who will get the ball in the 9th" situation we were in after the trades last year, and if someone else earns the position away from him, great! -

White Sox acquire Joakim Soria, Luis Avilan and $3 Million
Balta1701 replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
As noted before - the only salary the White Sox would really care to shed is Shields, and he's not signed in 2019 so there's no real way the White Sox can send any money back to balance this. That means the only money moving in the deal would be Kemp's deal. The White Sox would basically be taking on $40 million or so in order to get talent from the Dodgers. That's comparable to the price the White Sox paid for Robert, give or take the penalties. In other words, for any version of this to make sense for the White Sox...they better be getting absolute gold back. Not a reclamation project like Joc - or at least not "only Joc", you need a very strong package to make this fair for the White Sox. You want guys who, 14 months ago, would be the top prospect in the White Sox system. -

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 07:50 PM) I would guess a high priced player from our team (Shields) or minor league depth like Jacob May or someone like that. Shields is a terrible fit for what the Dodgers are trying to do - they want to remove payroll in 2018 so that they have space under the tax level. That way they're out of the "multi-year offender" penalties next year when Harper is on the market. That's what they did with the Braves deal - they shed payroll in 2019 but took on payroll in 2018 to stay under the Tax. If they could move Kemp without taking back salary, that could give them space to sign Darvish. -

QUOTE (KnightsOnMintSt @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 07:49 PM) The only reason that I would throw him in is because I am so high on Giolito, Kopech, Hansen and Lopez. I think there simply just wont be room for Cease by the time he is MLB ready. And if that is true, it would be a good idea to deal him sooner before the White Sox have no leverage left with him. Obviously a good "problem" to have. If Cease does break out and the White Sox have no room for him - either we have 6 starters (frankly this isn't a bad thing) or Cease is a top flight trade candidate. Take a look at the Mets for examples both ways. They had a need and a loaded pitching staff and traded Fulmer to the Tigers for Cespedes. This literally put the Mets in the World Series when they probably would have missed the playoffs without him. On the other hand, after that season, the Mets young pitching staff all got hurt and they really could have used the extra arm. -

QUOTE (Moncada @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 06:45 PM) NO, NO, NO, NO, NO Unless it's for penny's on the dollar and I mean penny's In the hypothetical case we had so little confidence in our IFs that we were actually interested in Moustakas, I'd prefer spending less money on a 1 year deal for Frazier to signing Moustakas. It'd still be completely backwards, but it wouldn't be as much of a 2018 offseason impediment.
