The headline of the article "Trump advisor: Global Warming Could Be Disproven Just Like Flat Earth Theory" misses the saddest part.

This is perhaps more disconcerting than Rick Perry's nomination. This s*** can end the world.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 02:54 PM) Good rundown in the Trade section: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/12/find...ext-closer.html Ok, so basically there's a number of guys like Herrera and KRod who could be available if their teams get off to a poor start. That could leave the market having Robertson + a couple other available guys, since some team is going to struggle. Not a loaded market but possibly no longer a seller's market either.
-
QUOTE (bighurt574 @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 02:42 PM) If Robertson can show that he's still his old self, he could easily net a top-50 prospect at the deadline with 1.5 years of control at a reasonable enough contract. He wasn't even that bad last year, he just needs to get the walks down. On the flip side, if we can find a taker for Robertson now, we can try to build Jones' value as a closer. Are there likely to be any other big name closers on the market at the deadline this year? Assuming normal things like "Cleveland doesn't fall apart". Herrera, K-Rod come to mind just from our division as possible if their teams break down a bit.

QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 01:26 PM) What are standards for anyway? Apparently the line they're coming using there also references a 1930s era play written to celebrate Hitler coming to power. Now please tell me again why I should give them a chance.

So, here's an article by the page run by the President's special advisor suggesting I should be shot.

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Dec 12, 2016 -> 06:10 PM) Random people on Twitter are saying that Trump made this statement on TV before he tweeted it. Not sure if that's true or not. He did, but his statements were last Friday. I saw one person yesterday with an attempted debunk of this using a page with different timestamps so it might well be a timestamp issue, just not sure exactly how the timestamp on one is more trustworthy than another, but that would make sense.

Everyone realizes that managing oil and gas reserves, what Rick Perry would do in Texas, is not what is done by the department of Energy correct? Nuclear weapons, electricity grid, etc? The part dealing with oil and gas extraction is under Interior a lot.

QUOTE (Deadpool @ Dec 11, 2016 -> 08:22 PM) The Bears need to make a move at quarterback, but you can't blame them for thinking they would have Cutler a whole season. The administration hasn't tried, but they haven't had to. No one honestly thought Dak Prescott (Dallas' fifth pick in the draft) would be the franchise quarterback to come out of this draft. I can't blame them for thinking they'd have Cutler for "most" of the season, but anyone who thought Jay Cutler would start 16 games based on his history wasn't doing their job. Furthermore, anyone could see that Jay Cutler's contract allowed the Bears an extremely easy out after this season, and there was a substantial probability they'd use that out if he had anything other than a top flight season. Similarly, I cannot blame the Bears for missing on Dak Prescott alone. However, I can state that the Bears have had available draft picks when a number of different QBs went. While I couldn't have predicted hitting a late draft pick, I can predict with ease that you have 0 chance of filling the most important position on the field when you do not select one. They should have at least been trying. If they didn't like the 1 or 2 round QBs, fine, they have Cutler, but there was always playing time available behind him.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 12, 2016 -> 01:41 AM) Cmon. I am an American. I wouldn't vote for Trump, but now that he's in, I hope my wallet expands. I mean I don't think it will; he probably will be a disaster, but I can hope. I'm not rooting for his failure, that's for sure. It's kind of rude of you to suggest I'd move to Russia. I am an American through and through. I love our military and love this country. Yes I despise Hillary. I'm human and she rubs me the wrong way. And yet you're ok with Russia having committed criminal acts in support of the election of Donald Trump and encourage others to leave the country if they have an issue with lawbreaking in support of a candidate.

This morning, someone started dumping Lockheed Martin stock 6 minutes before Donald Trump tweeted negatively about them.

Trade/FA Predictions for Rest of Off Season

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 11, 2016 -> 10:37 PM) I'd go $5-7 million for a Carter or Alvarez, but would rather spend that money on someone like Rasmus that could competently play the field. Would also like to firm up that outfield by making sure Cabrera and Avi Garcia don't undermine the confidence of the young pitching staff too much. Not sure they would consider Austin Jackson again, but someone similar. With Tilson, we just don't know much about where his hamstring injury is right now...whether it's going to be fine or he'll lose a step or two, which would dent his value to the Sox defensively. I don't see why Alvarez and Rasmus both wouldn't be options on 1 year deals. That's basically the same amount of money we just traded away. -
QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Dec 11, 2016 -> 06:27 PM) Bears have to take a shot at one of these young QBs right? It sounds like Cleveland will take the star defensive player. We'll see what s***ty SF does. They're run terribly. I like John Fox and think you'll be alright. Hang in there Bears fans. This isn't a great QB class, so I'm hoping one falls into the laps of my Kansas City Chiefs. (DeShaun Watson) The Bears absolutely need to do something at QB. Either a high draft pick or a trade for a short term veteran, or perhaps even both. The fact that this administration hasn't even tried, despite knowing the clock on Cutler would potentially have him cut after this year, is inexcusable. At least spend a 3rd round pick and see if you find a Dak Prescott.

Russell Wilson has killed me this year.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 11, 2016 -> 02:45 PM) Oh. I thought it was for calling her names. I have a lot of concern for Trump. I think he's a ruthless person, I'd lean toward calling him a very bad person, but that's just my opinion. I am not a fan of 1 percenters who step on the little guy daily to make millions. As far as this issue, I'm not really full of knowledge about it but I'd assume you are all right and it's disgusting, etc. You should quote me correctly. I said if he's not your president then you can move to Canada. I said I always showed Obama respect on here even though I thought he was a lousy president/great Sox fan. I never said move to Canada. I said if he's not your president then you can move to Canada. You guys who wanted Hillary to win were like all the pundits. You underestimated how many Americans (yes we are all Americans) would never never never vote for her. How many Americans despised her. I read somewhere she is the most disliked politician ever. As bad as Trump is, I do stand by my line that he should be showed respect. Caulfield made a good point though that we don't really respect our Presidents anymore so I should consider that in more depth. Perhaps if he's your president you should move to Russia.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 10, 2016 -> 11:53 PM) I would imagine he already has more wealth than he could spend in several lifetimes. What possible qualifications he has, aside from "has received awards from Russia", is beyond me. Apparently Exxon has a $300 billion drilling deal in the Russian Arctic that has been on hold since 2014 due to the sanctions. So this is a multi-billion dollar rapprochement for his pocketbook.
-
QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Dec 11, 2016 -> 12:02 AM) It's hard to say when the team will be competitive because it depends on the development of the young players and we need to how continue to develop at the ML level. But if you put a gun to my head, I would say 2020. Hopefully we get a couple top picks in the meantime If these guys start breaking in mostly by 2018, then 2019 can be our version of the "2015 Cubs".
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 10, 2016 -> 09:27 PM) Why would the CEO of Exxon want to be SOS? That is quite the pay cut. Future potential earnings? Does he have to resign his position as CEO to take the job? IF Russia has made you enough money, you owe them?
-
QUOTE (Ro Da Don @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 01:57 PM) Supposedly STL vastly overpaid to ensure they'd land him for sure. I agree with you, though. Huge contract for a solid contributer. Apparently them going hard after Fowler was in part a response to the talent level the White Sox were asking for on Eaton. Once Eaton moved they jumped in with money to make sure they didn't come away empty handed.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 02:27 PM) Trump transition wants names of Energy Department staff who worked on climate We can imagine who's getting purged first. I'm seeing people I know today realizing they need to scramble to have data that is currently available on US Government servers backed up by or transferred to databases held by universities to protect it from deletion by our government for political reasons.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 10, 2016 -> 11:05 AM) Secret CIA assessment says Russia was trying to help Trump win White House So this really is rather amazing. We have a foreign intelligence industry successfully intervening in a U.S. Election on behalf of one candidate with the tacit approval of that candidate and other top level officials in his party, including one whose wife is now a cabinet level nominee. At this point, the United States system does not have any way to deal with this. if someone successfully intervenes in the U.S. election using foreign resources, a faulty election still stands because there's no mechanism by which we could do anything about the intervention.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 11:46 AM) Supreme court would not let that happen, as one, congress has not declared war. But as much as I hate Ryan for being a flake and pushing a brutal agenda, there is no way that guy does not reach out to democrats to stop that. But nothing has been real for a while. If you're counting on Paul Ryan to save this country's soul, he's made it very clear he'll sacrifice that for lower taxes. And if you're counting on the Supreme Court to save it...we saved Donald Trump a seat so that they won't save it. Our institutions, the norms, the rule of law don't matter when people stop enforcing those things as a tradeoff to get what they want.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 11:37 AM) That is horrifying. That is what you need to keep in mind and compound with his attacks on private citizens for criticizing him. That's why I'm legitimately fearful of authoritarianism coming to this country--it can't happen here, until it does. Pence would just set up camps to electroshock your LGBT friends and relatives, though. He might believe in it but he hasn't, even in Indiana, made that government policy by force. He's made discrimination government policy and yes that's terrible, but he hasn't sent in the police to round up people for that treatment. That's Gestapo s***. The stuff I just read right there is "Every one of you if you are a decent human being, find a muslim and offer them your attic". We cannot be those people.

QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 12:14 PM) Harper wants $400M (which the Yankees will pay) and Machado should be able to get $300M. I could *possibly* see the Sox signing Machado in 2019 if there are "outs" in the contract (like Albert Belle's), but I don't think it's likely. I'm not even sure if Machado would be interested in signing with the White Sox. Unless Baltimore puts $300 million on the table to extend him first which they might...he will go where he gets paid. This is baseball, we have seen that happen a hundred times. Put an offer $10 million more than anyone else on the table and you will sign him.
