QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 11:27 PM) Is there really no Standing Rock/DAPL thread? Is it being talked about anywhere? I know it's "over" but thought I'd check. I'm in Bismarck tonight heading to the camps for the next couple days to help run supplies. It's really insane out here right now. Mentioned it here when they broke out the water cannons in freezing temperatures and blew that one woman's arm off.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 11:19 PM) Not really. It is amazing for a guy who thinks he is so much smarter than anyone, how you comprehend talk about the White Sox moving him. Read it again and all it said was in someone's opinion there was a better chance they traded Eaton than Abreu. There has been nothing about the White Wox looking to trade him. All their players are available including Q and Rodon. Bad attitudes all around I guess. Run with it. For some reason they thought he was such a problem they kept him around for 3 years and have him signed for 5 more. And I find it rather disgusting that you can't avoid making it personal the moment someone disagrees with you and takes a different opinion of available information. I made a point about baseball. You could disagree with it without going after me personally.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 08:30 PM) Marking, the Sox beat guy who the clubhouse, not on the internet reaching for anything negative to say about anything White Sox, says he is great in the. Clubhouse. It's on a CSN podcast on their site if to listen to it. And here is the story about his "bad attitude" you constantly refer to with Arizona.. maybe you need to retire it. http://archive.azcentral.com/sports/diamon...adam-eaton.html And yet, there was talk of the White Sox moving him even before they moved Sale. That tells me something.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
Balta1701 replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (DirtySox @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 10:35 PM) Washington truly seems like a good match for Quintana. Robles+ would still be a great return. What other teams have the prospect power and the need? Atlanta/Houston back in play? Colorado? I'd think that all the teams you just mentioned, maybe throw in the Yankees as well. Probably could even come up with some creative ones with 4 years of control. I'd still say they make even more sense than Washington. -
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 10:35 PM) Ryan Hanigan on minor league deal. Or any other backup type. Great, do that anyway.
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 10:33 PM) Ramos got $12.5 mill over 2 years with potential to make up to $18.5. I would have offered a bit more guaranteed money to get him in. Eh, the problem with Ramos is that someone still has to catch for the first 1/2 of the season, so we still need a catcher somewhere else to go along with Narvaez.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 10:20 PM) Washington was brought in by the A's to work with Siemien and to help improve his defense. Ozzie Drills, 2 and 4 step work, short hop work, clock drill work. Just hard work of taking reps over and over. They did a lot of basic mechanical work with him to help him become better. I am positive that the sox have someone who has a similar role with the sox. I can only hope that they attach that person with our young prospects and focus on their defense. In the minor leagues the only thing I want is the prospects to have the best and brightest talent to work with them and help develop them. From Defense to hitting to our pitchers. The irony is...you just made the correct and convincing case that the White Sox don't have anyone like that, or at least didn't as recently as 2014. Hopefully they've hired someone since then.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
Balta1701 replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (maxjusttyped @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 09:59 PM) I'm surprised we aren't hearing more about Nate Jones. Literally any team that is trying to contend this year could use him. Chapman and Jansen need to clear the market first. Even if he's not a closer, teams are going to grab the dominant bullpen guys first. Possibly Wade Davis as well. -
QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 09:33 PM) Same here as well. The idea of X player will just play this position that he never played before. It requires thousands and thousands of reps to drill in some of this first step footwork for those who never played the OF especially a premier position such as CF. Unless you are okay with your really fast player chasing balls he misplayed in the gap or on the other side of it getting hurt because he is trying to make up for a bad jump and diving. In reality we need to make sure we attempt to develop him at his natural position first. I don't see lots of people complaining that Dustin Pedroia, Javey Baez or Jose Altuve are wasting their talents playing 2b. Middle infield is a premier position and I dont care if my best athletes are up the middle of the infield first. One thing I'm particularly happy about with this thread is that it seems like the White Sox aren't going to play around with him. They are coming right out and saying "we're going to put him at 2b". That's a positive sign and exactly what I would want them to do with him - make a call and stick with it even if they have needs at other positions. The job is to turn him into a decade long all star - everything else is subservient to that goal.
-
IMO, they should be doing anything and everything they can to keep Collins at catcher as long as possible. They still need someone else there this year though.
-
QUOTE (Ro Da Don @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 09:07 PM) Yeah if he was 22, not 28. The Sox sent a clear message acquiring strictly prospects - that this is gonna be a long process. Eaton will be 31 or 32 with a year or 2 of control left by the time we're competitive again anually. The other thing that needs to be brought up in every Eaton thread is that he's a guy we heard the word "attitude" used about even before we traded for him, and he just might not be that good of a guy to have around on a team that is clearly looking 3 years down the road and just traded a guy he's probably friends with.

Your response to Sale getting traded to the Red Sox
Balta1701 replied to Kyyle23's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Real @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 07:55 PM) Red Sox won this trade. -WEEI Host If they win the world series that will be an entirely fair statement that would take Moncada turning into Trout to match. -
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 07:46 PM) If you consider B+ a top 25 guy I agree. Otherwise I want a top 50, someone in back end or just outside top 100, and a lottery ticket Coop likes. That would have been a fair ask...if his 2016 had matched his 2015. Since you can say right now that he appears to be trending down, you have all sorts of other questions that knock that ask a bit down. 50-80 with someone 80-120 would make more sense to me.
-
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 07:33 PM) Because he's turning 30 (at best) this winter, has declined two years in a row, and probably won't be a part of the next Sox playoff team. He doesn't have a lot of value but he likely has more now than next offseason or at the deadline after another slow 1st half. I totally agreed with this but as of today there's one more exception we have to add - Abreu could be a solid guy to have around Moncada.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 07:28 PM) To be fair, Frazier has played plenty of 1B, especially in Cincy Yeah, but only having 1b open for him reduces his value in my eyes...unless your team is clearly 1 player away and weak at that spot. I'd like to say I can't imagine Colorado thinking that but then I'd have to write a Kenny Williams joke. Hell, he makes sense in Cleveland for that reason too. My favorite hidden destination for Frazier is KC - they have a 1 year ticking clock, they just lost their DH, and their 1b and 3b both had down/injury riddled years last year so you could literally rotate the 3 in and out of those positions.

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 08:11 PM) Do you really think that's sustainable federal policy to keep jobs here? Negotiate on a case-by-case basis? I understand how this works at a state or local level, I really don't see how it works as national policy. The company it happened with was in the same state as the VP so they could get tax breaks directly, and the company it happened with also has a larger conglomerate that has huge contracts with the federal government. It's clearly not a model for policy that can move to many other places. It's not a big deal, but saying "it's not a big deal" is an attack on the people who insist that it's a big deal, so saying that it isn't a big deal is a partisan thing that only dirty hippies like me will say.
-
I can't see Frazier being a fit for the Rockies at all. You're overspending on a guy who can play 3b in order to move him to 1b and then let him walk as a free agent? I can come up with probably 10 teams Frazier is a better fit for. The point of Abreu is that he's on your team for 3/$45 ish and you can even cut that to 2/$28 ish if he gets hurt so his contract is nice and insured. That makes a ton more sense for the Rockies, as with several other teams. I've felt for a while that he's a perfect fit for Cleveland. Lots of talent in their org, opening at 1b, would prefer the cost controlled guy compared to the big splash, no draft pick to give up as with EE. But you'd have to trade in the division.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
Balta1701 replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (daa84 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 04:39 PM) jeff passan from yahoo on with waddle and silvy said the sox are getting offers about 95% of what they got for sale. some teams preferred Quintana. Sign me up for that. The key to all this is to sell high on these guys, and now feels like the peak value for Jose. Same with eaton. If the Pirates were in on either of them I'd have expected them to go after Quintana. Ditto the Astros. The Dodgers, Red Sox, and Nationals made more sense with Sale. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 04:36 PM) Mazara is the only remotely interesting guy out of that bunch. I think Gallo is a lost cause. He just doesn't make enough contact. Profar's been around for a while and still hasn't panned out. Gallo and Profar would be interesting as pieces 3-4 in such a deal. If you stuck Mendez in there (MLB.com's #55 prospect) to make it a 4-pack, you've got a deal that intrigues me enough that I'm sitting down and talking to my scouts about it. -
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 04:26 PM) I saw him carrying the pink backpack his rookie year in Baltimore pregame, in a game that Viciedo actually started at 3B. Then he came in in relief later in the game and was all arms and elbows, IIRC that was his MLB debut. Proud to say I was at the game. That will be my lasting memory of him, all promise and mostly fulfilled individually but not as a team. But he is only one of 25. I will never forget that first at bat he had against Joe Mauer out of the bullpen in 2010. In fact I think this is the at bat right here. Mauer's 3/3 at the time with a HR, and he's a foot away from the 3rd pitch sale throws. You can see Mauer visibly exhaling or something like that after the last swing.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go

QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 04:17 PM) Tbh, it is possible we could still be contending while Q is under contract. Unless I'm blown away with an offer, I'm not so sure it makes sense to rush into selling Q. I would probably be interested in a Robles/Reynaldo Lopez ++ package, but it's a gamble. More incentive IMO to hang on to Q. There's "asking to be blown away" then there's "asking for a fair value for an exceptionally valuable piece". Asking to be blown away was the White Sox asking for Betts and Benintendi for Sale last summer - if that was our reply, that is tantamount to "There is no chance we're trading this player at this time". I would not do that with Quintana. If we receive a fair offer for him, there is no reason not to move him. A fair offer for him is comparable to what just came back for Sale, due to the extra year of control, give or take. If a team puts that up, then you make the deal. If not, you may take a lesser price in a couple years, but he's still a moveable asset in a year or two. -
Man it was fun watching that guy pitch when he was on.

Red Sox acquire Chris Sale, White Sox get Moncada+
Balta1701 replied to Southwest Sider's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 04:15 PM) My understanding is that he was hobbled by a leg injury early last season. If that's true, it would explain why he was still getting on base but couldn't hit with power early on, and then began tearing the cover off the ball in August. So I don't think that there's a skills loss yet, but I agree that he may become more of an injury risk over time. (I'm also skeptical of his age, as players who come out of Cuba are sometimes older than what their documentation indicates.) And that's why I'd want to see him play a full, healthy season next year and put up 2015 numbers before extending him through 2020 or 2021. I recall reading that Jose opted into arbitration recently. Is that true? If so, does that mean that he's out of his current contract and year-to-year now? Yes, Jose has opted out of his contract and will have an arbitration/1 year deal each of the next 3 seasons, unless a contract extension is reached. If his issue was injury last year, then he hit the DL his first season with us, had some days that he missed with injury and some days at DH with LaRoche playing 1b in 2015, and then had injuries sour a full 1/2 season in 2016. That kind of trend would not augur well for a recovery in 2017. -
Red Sox acquire Chris Sale, White Sox get Moncada+

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 04:13 PM) Yes you do. Of course, if he bounces back this year that throws a wrench into my argument. But his decline so far looks like a pretty standard aging curve from late 20s to early 30s. It's definitely early if he's only 29. -

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 04:10 PM) As I've said before: the simplest explanation is that's he's not 29, he's 32. If they even suspect that is possible, then you take the best offer you can for him.
