QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 12:33 PM) I was low balling cause I didnt want to argue the value. There is no way to argue its not worth hundreds of millions. I just didnt want to get in a valuation argument of whether its true a billion dollar company. You seem to be making arguments that I am not making. I never said it wasnt a lame duck job, I simply said that there were other options than either Martz or Tice. I also never said that the options may have be limited because of this. What I did say was that you cant just assume that "it wouldnt have mattered". Because if nothing matters, why are we firing Lovie in the first place? You seem to be giving the Bears FO the benefit of the doubt. I am simply asking, what have they done to be deserving of this? For the last few years the Bears offense has been the weakness. Yet the Bears put almost no time into finding a coach for their weakness. That is terrible. Now maybe it was Lovie. Maybe Lovie wanted Tice ony. But if that was the case, the Bears should have fired Lovie last year, and hired a New GM/New Coach and started fresh. That is the ultimate argument here, that the Bears FO f***ed this up from the start last year, when they did their backwards hire a GM, but cant fire a HC nonsense. And Im sorry, but you just cant blame Lovie for that. Again, assumption. Emery said he wanted to evaluate the team going forward, nobody has come out and said that Emery was given a directive to keep Lovie around.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 12:21 PM) No if it was who Lovie wanted then Id be absolutely fine with the Bears firing Lovie because thats pretty ridiculous to not even look at your options. I dont know who had the power. And this is the point here. You dont know, yet you continue to blame the front office. From all accounts Lovie was very specific in who he wanted around and it rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Just ask Ron Rivera. What was attractive about this job last January? Angelo was fired, Lovie was on an obvious short leash. What coach would want to tie himself to this team only to be looking for a new job in a year? Sure, the bears could have backed up the truck and offered tons of money to a new OC, but it wouldnt have mattered. This offensive line wasnt going to block anything, nobody was going to reinvent the wheel here. It was a lame duck job whether you want to admit it or not
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 12:17 PM) The Bears didnt even look for a new OC when martz resigned. Tice was hired 3 days later. How can you even suggest the bears were stuck with Tice when they didnt even take a week to try and find a new OC? If I said "That is who Lovie wanted" you wouldnt believe it, and you would blame the front office. What is the point in arguing this with you? The Bears FO is to blame for everything, the end. On to next season

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 11:58 AM) Thats just not true. There are plenty of coaches that want an opportunity. Im sure there were plenty of people that wanted to work for the Bears when Martz was brought in. The bears just thought Martz would do well. http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/news/story?id=4877772 The Bears had plenty of choices, they just took the wrong guy, per usual. Chud removed himself from consideration to become OC for the Panthers. Zampese also elected to stay with the Bengals. Jobs where the coaches werent lame ducks

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 11:54 AM) Rob Ryan is actually a really good defensive coach. He'd never come here though for obvious reasons. Havent his team defenses consistently ranked in the bottom half?

Rob Ryan for Distraction Coordinator I mean Defensive Coordinator look at me I have long hair and swear a lot!

Fun Trestman quotes edited and taken out of context: "I first met Jay (cutler) 10 years ago, in a hotel room in Nashville. We had no facilities, and no Wide Recievers. For two days we just stared at each other." "I cannot wait to get my hands on Jay"

If I were Manti Te'os agent, I would try and get him a deal with Skype. "I am Manti Te'o. You should use Skype. I wish I did." The end. -
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 07:25 AM) The idea turns my stomach, but what are you saying? You would cease to be a fan? No, I wouldnt cease to be a fan. But there is just no way I could get behind it, I would just pray that Jay doesnt have a Mark Sanchez meltdown

QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 10:30 PM) Certainly, it is helpful and can be more or less so depending on what you're doing and how you use it. It just bothers me that this kid (much like Marcus Stroman) will be marked as a "user" now. Bears former QB Jim Miller is a user too, lol -
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 11:29 PM) The only way I accept Tebow on any roster is the last man. And in that position his function would be primarily decoy but if you can get the other team to spend time preparing for him that is likely more than you get out of your normal last man. Im sure Trestman thinks Tebow is a Steve Young waiting to be groomed like a Japanese garden. There is no circumstance that I would accept Tebow on the Bears. Lets completely forget the fact that he is a QB that cannot do the basic function of a QB, which is throw the ball, and lets point out how much of a distraction he would bring to the team. No. f***ing. Way.

This rumored coverup has so many holes in it based on Te'os actions, there really is no point. Just come clean. -

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 03:55 PM) Someones ass is going to be on the line here. I just have this strange feeling that Deadspin went a little to far. Youd have thought SI would vet the story a little bit before publishing and actual confirm that the girl was real. When you are dealing with online/public persona's its not always ascertain the birth name. Im sure that some people in this thread have been shocked to find out what their friends "real name" is. And if you didnt know it, you might not be able to find any of their records either. I use Lexis Nexis as part of my job, aliases show up just like regular names. I would find it pretty strange that she both attended Stanford and passed away due to these tragic circumstances and NOTHING is in LN, or the local papers. THen seeing what Tauisosopa was doing, thats seeming pretty shady. And nobodies ass is on the line at deadspin. THis is what they do. Sometimes the dirt pans out, sometimes it doesnt. It wouldnt be the first time something blew up in their face -

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 09:24 AM) I CAN'T BELIEVE DA BEARS WUD HIRE A GUY FROM CANADIA The Score meatheads are in rare form this morning
-
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 08:52 AM) Dave Toub also coached with Reid before. Yeah, Toub mentioned that Reid brought him in to the league, and tried multiple times to hire him away from the bears
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 08:35 AM) This was more the fact that Toub directly competed with Trestman for the job and Trestman was the better man. There could be a lot of sour grapes in that situation. Sounds like one of the guys we interviewed for HC might end up our special teams coach. FWIW Toub was just interviewed on Mully and Hanley and it didnt sound like sour grapes at all. First off, he just became the highest paid ST coach in the league, and second off, he said it was time to try something new and see if he could succeed elsewhere. He was very complimentary of Trestman and of Emery interviewing him, he said it didnt feel like a sham interview, he really felt like he was given the opportunity to earn the job.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 08:04 AM) Eh, other than OL and TE what other needs does this team have? The defense is pretty good across all levels, definitely NFL average or better. The RB's are solid, the QB is set. I'm really not opposed to going after a big name WR as long as there is a plan behind it to fix the OL. A Marshall-Wallace-Jeffery-Bennett WR group with a competent TE and Matt Forte could be really, really dangerous. Thats what I said in the followup post, TE and OL are much more pressing needs. Of course that WR group would be great, but Wallace is going to be an in-demand FA and I dont want the Bears jumping to the top of the bidding before they address other needs.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 07:48 AM) Hester really doesn't count as a WR under contract, IMO. He is, whether you like it or not. Hopefully he is dealt, but still, Bennett was just given new paper and you have Alshon lining up too. No need to go out and get a big FA WR over more pressing needs
-
QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 07:01 AM) Jerry Rice compares Trestman to Bill Walsh. It was a very nice hire for the Bears. I got to meet Trestman when he was with the 49ers, he seem like a great guy Look for the Bears to sign a guy like Mike Wallace, Trestman loves having 2 star WR's lets not get crazy with the cheesewhiz here. The Bears have 3 WRs with big contracts in Marshall, Bennett and Hester, and they have Jeffery. Going out and getting Mike Wallace is not addressing the need of the offense, which is first and foremost Offensive Line. And probably tight end next.
