QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 12:43 PM) It's probably a good thing that Julius Peppers is a freakishly good football player. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/eye-on-f...t-study-classes Lets be honest, did any of us think he was a member of MENSA? Come on now, he wasnt at UNC to be a student, that is just silly

It looked so not-concussion worthy.

QUOTE (GoGoSox2k2 @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 11:03 AM) Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Mike Aviles has passed through waivers, but the Athletics are unlikely to trade for him.The A's inquired about him before the trade deadline but felt the Red Sox were asking for too much in return for the shortstop. Slusser says the chances of Oakland adding an upgrade at shortstop prior to September are "slim." Aviles is batting .252/.280/.393 with 11 homers and 10 steals this season for Boston. Aug 12 - 9:28 AMSource: San Francisco Chronicle huh, too much. The Red Sox must be asking for 5 bucks back

Nick Punto has cleared waivers Yuniesky Betancourt DFA by the Royals

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 10:59 AM) I don't think we know for sure that Aviles cleared waivers. Even if he did, I can't see Boston getting rid of him with Middlebrooks gone for the year now. Really though, if Boston has no plans for Aviles then why keep him? It isnt as if they are suddenly going to vault into contention, they are 2 games under .500 and going nowhere.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 10:52 AM) When the mayor of Rio was up there with the flag, I couldn't help but chuckle imagining Daley up there, had Chicago won the bid. (You know he wouldn't have retired if they had won the bid) Wasnt Daley already out of office when the bidding was finalized?

Did Aviles clear waivers? I saw he was put on waivers on friday, but I havent read he is cleared yet

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 10:39 AM) Dick Allen speaking a lot of truth in this thread. So many on this board let the tide take them way up and way down. The Danks HR took people way up. Everything else he is should be taking you back down soon enough, whenever he gets back. Thanks much for the HR, but it was one at-bat. Personnel decisions aren't based on small sample sizes, and his defense and athleticism are not exceptional they're just solid. Funny that you should say that personnel decisions aren't based on small sample sizes when his ops in 49 at bats continues to be pointed out. Again, not saying he is gonna be a star, but the detractors are being just as ridiculous as the one homer happy crowd

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 09:57 AM) The league I'm in outlaws bats that are not ASA approved or that were banned following their initial approvals. Still, occasionally you see a team try and bring one out. Generally we are able to catch this and tell and as someone who sometimes pitches, I can tell you I fully support not allowing the illegal bats. The balls just fly off them so fast. Reacting in time on the mouund just becomes more difficult. One of the rules in AHPD is if a ball is hit and strikes a player without the player deflecting it with a mitt, the bat is immediately confiscated by the umpire and not to be used for the rest of the game, and re-tested in the concession stand where the density test machine is. We actually lost a hot bat in a playoff game as a direct result of that rule. My RF hit it box and the pitcher didnt even move his glove hand and it deflected off his glove side bicep. When i say hot bat, I dont mean it was a cheater bat, it just was on fire, it opened up at the right time and the entire team was using it. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 09:42 AM) You'd woo a girl with Steve Stone's playgirl profile? Strange. Are you kidding? That is money. You hold that thing up at a bar and girls flock to you. Well, women. Well.....older women. But it works

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 09:35 AM) Generally, 26 year old back ups don't develop into productive players. Obviously there are exceptions, but the odds are heavily stacked against Jordan Danks being anything but a mediocre major leaguer. Im not saying he will be a star. I certainly think he will have a better career than what we have seen so far, although the defense is pretty good
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 09:12 AM) I bet he wooed her with the PlayGirl profile I would do that.

I think they have the fat reserves for the extra energy needed for playing a lot.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 09:25 AM) What was Konerko, 21 or 22? Danks is 26. So what? You keep riding that, some guys take longer to get to the big leagues. He went to college, he didnt start the minors until he was 22, Konerko went straight to the minors at 18. Look, I get it DA, you dont think he is worth complaining that he is going to the minors. I dont think it is a big deal either, i actually prefer him to get regular ABs for the next 3 weeks as well. But I certainly dont think he is awful and is never going to amount to anything.
-
QUOTE (Reddy @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 09:12 AM) that's a .900 OPS... 49 at bats. That was konerkos line over 3 seperate seasons. After 49 at bats? .195/.277/.195. Ops .472 http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/...b&year=1998

Rios and Dunn not moving in batting order

Dunns good times were pretty much tied to Konerkos. Dunn started to fall off as soon as Konerko's wrist became an issue. -

QUOTE (The Critic @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 03:13 AM) I made the ball go very far by using a wood bat, a well-timed swing, and my large rear end for leverage. If you don't have a large rear end, then yeah, a quintuple-walled bat may be the thing for you. Yeah, but going very far in the 1980s was 275, I have to send it 325 i'll get off your lawn now -

Hopefully the Sox can overcome the house of horrors that the Skydome/Rogers Centre has been since....ever. The Blue Jays are severely depleted due to injury, this has to be taken advantage of. GO SOX!

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 12, 2012 -> 09:54 PM) .621 OPS .347 SLG Danks is awful. Come on, really? 49 at bats? Paul konerko was sitting at .216/.319/.590 after 397 at bats. Let's give him a little more than spot duty before we kick dirt over his grave
