QUOTE(Damen @ Apr 28, 2006 -> 04:18 PM) You mean the constant statements like... "This is the best 5 man rotation I've ever seen" "This is the best 3-4-5 lineup I've ever seen" "Crede's playin the best defense I've ever seen" "Contreras has the most movement I've ever seen" And the best, after KC beat the Sox to win the Series in April, Hawk said this in reference to the jugernaut reigning in KC. "Don't be fooled, this team is good." "Make no mistake about it..." My personal favorite is his answer to "which manager would you loved to have played for?" Now, I was at least sort of expecting him to remain semi-objective before diving deep into Ozzie's ass by naming some other managers but I didn't even get that. He just said Ozzie and that was it. And of course, DJ, not wanting to be out-homered by his partner, said the same. :headshake

As long as we're on this topic... I love Hawk as much as the next guy, but his incessant slobbering over everything White Sox is becoming overkill. I mean, Jesus Christ, you'd think it's impossible for any major league team to win the World Series without Joey Cora coaching 3rd base. /rant. I guess this is what happens after you win a WS.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 24, 2006 -> 10:09 AM) 99 wins last year was a lot of wins. Let's face it. The division is way better than last year, and we really fattened up on the AL Central We should be thrilled if we can duplicate teh 99 wins of last year, but talking about 116 wins being possible is just insane at this point of the season. I'm not sure if we can say the division is way better at this point. Cleveland and Minnesota didn't do much to improve on paper. If you ask me, Cleveland actually took a step back by losing Crisp and Millwood. The Royal might be worse than they were last year, if that's even possible. Detroit looks improved, however.

Game Thread - 04/13 Garland vs. Verlander

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Apr 13, 2006 -> 02:23 PM) All of them were making a lot more money and all of them were either bad or hurt. Hampton was brutal in Colorado and was 2 years removed from pitching well. Brown was consistently hurt, even in the year before he got traded. Chris Benson has been brutal since his arm surgery, and that's in the NL. The thinking on Hampton was "we can fix him, because he's been very good before." If Garland has a bad season, the thinking will be "he had a career year 2 years ago, he's not worth that contract." Brown was 14-9 with a 2.39 ERA in 211 IP the season before being traded. He made 32 starts. I don't know how "consistently" hurt he was that year. Benson was 10-8, 4.13 ERA last season. I don't know if that qualifies as brutal in my book. -

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Apr 13, 2006 -> 02:18 PM) I don't think anyone has suggested giving up on him. Just take him out when he obviously has nothing and is getting rocked. You never know, you may need a cushion later. Eh, I agreed with how Ozzie handled Garland in this game. You don't have to manage every game like it's the 7th game of the World Series. Ozzie has always given his SPs a lot of rope... his approach worked last season. -

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Apr 13, 2006 -> 02:14 PM) If you can trade Chris Benson, Mike Hampton and Kevin Brown, you can trade Jon Garland. Hampton wasn't a one year wonder. Brown was coming off a good season when traded to NY. Benson had a decent year last season. All their situations are different from Garland's, IMO. -

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Apr 13, 2006 -> 02:12 PM) He is hitting .061, has zero steals, and already has 2 errors this year. I'd say that's not contributing much this year. This year = this week. -

QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Apr 13, 2006 -> 02:12 PM) If he continues to struggle, all the more reason as to why he won't be traded. No one is going to pay $20 M for a below average pitcher. But, for the record, I think he'll start pitching much better and it's foolish to give up on Garland now, particularly when we have so much invested in him. -

QUOTE(Soxfest @ Apr 13, 2006 -> 02:09 PM) I decent season if you think Garland is some upper tier AL starter you are fooling yourself, he is a soft-tosser who had a career year. He is a .500 starter at best take of the blinders on JG. If he continues to struggle, all the more reason as to why he won't be traded. No one is going to pay $20 M for a below average pitcher. -

QUOTE(Soxfest @ Apr 13, 2006 -> 02:02 PM) JG will be the odd man out this winter! No, he won't. -
QUOTE(Wedge @ Apr 10, 2006 -> 09:55 PM) I was one of the "negative people" because I was worried about a 1-4 start and losing four games to division rivals. I'm sorry, but I think that I am justified in my concern, particularly since we lost 3 of those games when one of our former strengths failed us: the bullpen. While I am certainly glad that we've performed so well the last two games, I still think that concern is justified and that it is cleaer that the bullpen is not something we can rely as heavily on this season as last. Trust me, I'm a fan... but I wouldn't be a Sox fan if I wasn't worried! No, you must get a life and die. Only virtual high-fives are allowed here.

Not going to panic yet, but something bothers me

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Apr 8, 2006 -> 06:02 PM) Worry now? Not a chance. If we're struggling like this on Memorial Day then it's time to worry. This is true in many cases but not all. Our 2001 was seemingly over before it started. I didn't need to wait until Memorial Day to make that determination. On the flip side, I remember the Braves were being written off 2 years ago after still having a sub .500 record in mid-June. I'm really not that concerned about the bullpen at this point. It could be better, sure. But our losses are more due to either unexpectedly poor starting pitching (Garland and Garcia) or lack of hitting w/RISP. FWIW, the bottom of our lineup still looks really s***ty to me, especially now with Mackowiak playing and Pods struggling. I wouldn't be at all dissapointed if KW made improving the lineup a priority over the bullpen. -

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Apr 8, 2006 -> 04:47 PM) Going into last season, KW made the bullpen a point of emphasis. With an increased budget, he pretty much ignored it this offseason other than to sign a gazillion minor league free agents, who showed why they had that status in spring training. Its hard to draw any conclusions after 5 games, but it obviously has started out worse than even the most pessimistic would have imagined. Who could we have signed? -

QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 8, 2006 -> 04:27 PM) Here's the biggest problem with our bullpen....some of the guys who are supposed to be our prime performers (Politte and Jenks) have not looked good at all this year. If those guys both underperform this year, the Sox have no chance. This should also apply to Garland and Garcia, who gave us nothing in their 2 starts. -

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Apr 8, 2006 -> 04:15 PM) Logan gave up a gopher ball to Hafner. But that wasn't his fault in all reality because a guy should never jump from A ball to the majors like that, especially being thrown in there against Hafner. The Sox had more than enough chances to win that game after the Hafner home run. And giving up a HR to Hafner isn't exactly an idictment on any pitcher. -

We're not 1-4 because of Logan and Thorton. -

QUOTE(SnB @ Apr 8, 2006 -> 03:58 PM) we lose here's what to take out of this game: DO NOT PITCH TO SWEENEY FROM THE 7TH INNING ON. EVER. Or try to avoid grounding into re-f***ing-tarded double plays with the bases loaded and less than 2 out. -

Maybe Ozzie wanted to throw Logan right into the fire, to see what he's got in close games. Isn't that how Ozzie used Jenks when he was called up? -

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Apr 5, 2006 -> 02:41 PM) Might be all for Count, and if it is, he pitched a pretty damn good ballgame after the 1st. I agree. Very nice to see him maintain his 2nd half groove from last season. Even if the Sox can't win this game, it's an encouraging performance by Jose. -

Contreras is at 96 pitches; will be interesting to see what Ozzie does. If this was the middle of the season, I wouldn't even ask, but since it's Contreras' first start of the season I'm not sure how much he has left.
