Sox vs. Indians - 4/5 Game Thread
Frankensteiner replied to Heads22's topic in 2006 Season in Review
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Apr 5, 2006 -> 01:29 PM) A lot of times the pitching takes a while to catch up to the hitting. Happens at the beginning of almost every season through out the league. I always thought it was the other way around. -

QUOTE(ChWRoCk2 @ Apr 4, 2006 -> 02:22 PM) alot of teams would like to have him im sure, its just one game people, he will get in form If he's not throwing hard, this is what you get: a bad pitcher with $19M left on his contract. -

Well, this season's already interesting. I was expecting one of Contreras/Garland to take a step back, but with Garcia turning into Kirk Reuter, I'm hoping both can duplicate last season. -

QUOTE(striker62704 @ Apr 4, 2006 -> 02:19 PM) Freddy Garcia has nothing on his fastball. He's getting traded. Who's gonna take him? -

Is that Larry David sitting behind the Cleveland dugout? -
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 31, 2006 -> 11:55 AM) I think they are priming Brandon for the back end of the pen right now because of his stuff. Thorton is the innings eater right now. Yeah, I agree. Innings eater is a synonym for worst pitcher in the bullpen.

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 31, 2006 -> 11:46 AM) Not a soul would have complained if we would have just replaced them with legit major league pitchers. Also, I think that the crapiness that has been Bobby Jenks so far is showing how uncertain our bullpen is. I don't think we should have approached the off-season with the expectation that Bobby Jenks was going to suck. No team can put 3 or 4 closer types in the pen. What was our alternative, anyway? Giving a 3yr/$18M contract to the Farns?

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Mar 31, 2006 -> 11:34 AM) He didn't just overlook it, he pissed away the depth we had there. Trading for Vazquez is fine and dandy, but if your going to give up 2/6th's of our pen and lose another 1/3rd do to injury I expect to see quality replacements brought in. I have no problem developing a guy or so to start the seaosn or even 2 if we had 4 quality relievers that are proven, but this many, its flat out ridiculous. I have to disagree with you there. The guys we traded away from the bullpen weren't exactly dependable relievers. Marte had confidence issues, Duque had injury questions, and there's a reason Vizcaino was nicknamed jizz-can for part of the season. His overall numbers looked OK, but I could count on one hand the number of meaningful outs he recorded last year. Also, as I've said before, relievers are by far the easiest commodity to acquire in mid-season trades. When teams start falling out of the race, there's going to be a ton of these guys available. Maybe not closers, but dependable guys that a team could use in the 6th-8th innings.

What are Schoney and Scott Sullivan doing these days? I think our bullpen troubles are overplayed. We should still be solid at the top with Jenks/Cotts/Politte, and I'm expecting BMac to perform at least adequately. We can always pick up decent relievers at the trade deadline in July. It's not like we'll fall out of the race by then because our 5th best reliever isn't that good.

QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Feb 26, 2006 -> 06:34 PM) fatass? 6 months ago he was god around here? Am I the only Frank Thomas fan left? No, certainly not.

I don't begrudge either side in this case. Not re-signing, and getting a replacement for, an oft-injured slugger was a wise move on Kenny's part. However, I can understand Frank's dissappointment in having to move on from his only team, especially one that just won the World Series. While the back-and-forth comments don't make either person look good, I can see why Kenny and Frank would both be frustrated.

Buehrle-Garcia-Contreras-Vazquez-Garland. It's not an available option, and I don't see Ozzie starting Vazquez ahead of Garland based on his importance to the team last year, but Garland could pick up some easy wins going up against the other team's 4th and 5th starters as he did in '05. Regardless, the rotation order is only meaningful through the first month and a half of the season. After that, and maybe even earlier, the pitching matchups (i.e. #1 vs. #1) become random anyway. Outside of possibly Buehrle, the starters should have statistically similar seasons this year.

No, not yet. Probably sometime in late March. Spring training never got me excited because it just means I have to wait longer for the real season to start.

Sox visit to White House may be on Monday

This is what sports-radio has to talk about on a slow news day. It's a total non-story, IMO. -
QUOTE(easyw @ Jan 28, 2006 -> 10:54 AM) I just got back from my first and last SoxFest. There is a difference between "fans" and "fanatics". It was creepy. really creepy. These people carrying around stuffed Sox bears, seeking autographs, and coming up with their own long lists for stadium improvements aren't normal. I need to take a shower.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 12:35 PM) He is basically telling his teammates that he doesn't think they are good enough to win anything. Which is really no different than Mike Brown saying "we suck," but if you actually win the division, then you're seen as a great motivator instead of a team cancer.

QUOTE(Soxfest @ Dec 19, 2005 -> 02:41 PM) Paid a little more than I thought I saw 3yr 12 mil package .......I like AJ and glad he is back but may have overpaid a little. I don't think we did, especially in comparison to what the O's paid Ramon Hernandez.

Did anyone notice this in the Sox website article? Getting Vazquez makes a little more sense knowing you'd have him for 3 years as opposed to just the 2 on his existing contract. If Arizona throws in some money, the deal would probably average around 3yr/$33M, the money they had earmarked for Garland.

I liked this signing for Cleveland, it's much better than paying Hoffman $20+ M over 3 years.

How bout this guy instead of Timo Perez?
Frankensteiner replied to maggsmaggs's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It seems like Timo is pretty popular in the locker room with guys like Pablo, Uribe, Marte, etc. -
So they spent all this time working out a trade with Detroit without even asking Vazquez if he'd be interested in playing for Detroit??

QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Dec 6, 2005 -> 02:28 AM) Prediction: Sox will get Pierre for Young. I expect Pierre to go somewhere very soon. And if the Sox sign Pierre- the Cubs will once again lose out on one of there "targets" this offseason. Not to mention it would create a hell of a 1-2 punch on our team. Go for it Kenny! I hope the Sox keep all of their young outfielders. When we start handing out big contracts to retain our pitchers, we're going to have to reduce salaries somewhere else. I wouldn't even be surprised by a minimum wage starting outfield of Owens/Young/Anderson in 2007.

QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 10:01 PM) Hoffman and Nomar would be solid, smart additions to the team. If you lose Millwood and Elarton, maybe you can fill that spot with a Jeremy Sowers-type but you probably need to either deal for or sign a free agent starter. I believe they made a 2-year offer to Paul Byrd.
