Illinois Income Tax to Jump 50 Percent?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 13, 2009 -> 10:07 PM) This data is from 2005 so slightly out of date but it's illustrative. It does not take in to account cost of living or the amount paid by the federal government (i.e. you kind of expect CA to have a higher tax burden than some other states because simply running a school out here costs more, and places like MI get more tax dollars back from the Feds than us) but it is illustrative. The %age given is an attempt to average out over everything, not just income taxes but income, sales, property, hotel, fuel, etc. Ah, here's the new data. In 2008 Illinois was still 30th. some guy was in this thread ranting about how illinois had the lowest tax rates. illinois is only 30th on the high tax list. lets go for #1!

IT Certification
QUOTE (Scwible @ Mar 10, 2009 -> 10:16 AM) Question, do you fellows here who are in the field have a degree that is related to what you do? computer science, etc.... i do, has worked well for me. depends on what you want to do. for someone who is going to push click their way through their career, the computer science education is merely for additional salary and job opportunities. more and more companies want a computer sci/related degree even for easy stuff.

Illinois Income Tax to Jump 50 Percent?
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Mar 13, 2009 -> 09:48 AM) No one likes tax increases, but how do we plug a $9 BILLION hole? Not many options. needs to be big spending cuts too. can't just tax our way out of it. people will spend less, business will look to relocate due to higher tax rates, economy will suffer.

Wonder why? oh yea cause he's a douche and is fine with screwing his kids over for his crazy beliefs; not ready to take that step with his own name.

IT Certification
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Mar 9, 2009 -> 03:47 PM) Everyone's having trouble in this environment. Trust me. This is the longest I have not worked since high school (20 years). That sucks man, best of luck finding a new position. You're right, the job market is really terrible for most everything except some heatlh care industries from what I've been reading.

IT Certification
QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Mar 9, 2009 -> 03:18 PM) I posted this somewhere else as well. Well, without too much detail, I'm interested a ton in computers and networking. I enjoy fixing computers because it saves money, but I enjoy almost anything that has to do with them, especially networking. With that said, I've had people suggest to me that maybe I should get into the IT field. So I was wondering Soxtalk, how do I go about gaining education in IT? How would I obtain a job? What's the job outlook? I heard about certifications, what are the best ones to gain? Where do you guys suggest a n00b like me start? What are some projects at home that I could do to test to see if I would actually like it? What are the most popular certifications? Any more information would be accepted as well. In the current market I'm not sure a cert alone will get you a job, but it's worth a try if you really like technology. It's not that big of an investment to buy the books and study up and pay for the test. If you have time, I would suggest trying to get into a good computer science program. The University of Illinois has a top notch one. Starting school at a community college is good too, just make sure you take a good mix of the math and foundation type classes for computer science. However, I heard even some computer science grads are having a little trouble in the current environment. Of course, nothing is for sure.

"These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis,'' said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ''The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.''
