QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Oct 25, 2006 -> 06:00 PM) Maybe not, but PSU beat Ohio St. and was one play away from being undefeated. I'm not sure how you can say OSU was the better team when they lost to Penn St. Home. Field. -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Oct 25, 2006 -> 05:17 PM) That OSU lost 2 games and lost to a Penn St. team that only lost 1 game and was one play away from being undefeated. PSU was the better team last year. Bowl games sure as hell don't support that point. -
QUOTE(thedoctor @ Oct 24, 2006 -> 11:48 AM) let me also pick up for zook a bit as a coach. i'm not going to claim the guy is a great gameday coach. clearly, he has his shortcomings and he makes some head-scratching decisions from time-to-time. most of that stuff is well-chronicled. but, if you are going to hold him accountable for some of the offensive and special teams stupidity, then you also must give him credit for the defensive turnaround illinois has seen. are they a great defense yet? not even close, but they are hugely improved over last year. the numbers are significant. last year illinois gave up abou 470 yards a game. this year the average is 300. last year they gave up almost 40 points a game, and this year they are surrendering 25. last year illinois gave up 54 touchdowns all season, and this year they've given up 17. now those number could go up, considering wisky and osu are next. but, they could also go down with purdue and northwestern following that. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 24, 2006 -> 01:49 AM) The Illini's big issue has been special teams, ESPECIALLY punter and punt returner. If Duvalt was allowed to do PR's and Weatherford was still in school, the Illini win the Ohio and Indiana games and might also have won at Penn State, turning 2-6 into 4-4 or 5-3. Kicking off the ball deep gainst IU also killed us.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 08:29 PM) I have basically come up with an opinion that I think fits pretty well for college football. If you have a unique style, you can win big. When you accumulate the elite talent like USC or Texas, you can then run the normal pro-style offenses and pound people into oblivion. I'm going to be watching to see if Urban Meyer switches to a pro-style offense at Florida as his talent accumulates or if he will be relatively unique like his predacessor Steve Spurrier, who kept a unique style his entire tenure. I agree with this completely. I think it's one of the many things that makes college football interesting and fun, as well. Purdue has their spread offense, Nortwestern has the shotgun, etc. I like watching games where different styles of teams match up.

Like others have said, you need to go in with the "i've got everything to gain, nothing to lose" mentality. You feel a bit nervous, and that's fine - it means you're human, that's all. Just try not to overthink anything, and act as natural as possible.

QUOTE(SnB @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 04:00 PM) i refuse to go to applebee's because of their gilligan's island commercial during march madness last year. Thanks for giving me a brutal flashback. We're together on this one.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 19, 2006 -> 01:31 PM) I know this will be argued a lot, but I guarantee this Illini team will be better than last years. They won't look much better in the final numbers (probably 3rd in the league and sweet 16), but they will be better. I hope this isn't quoted for stupidity later either, lol. I'm not gonna quote you for stupidity one way or the other. I'm just not going to agree or disagree with you before we see what the hell mcbride's deal is (out 10 games? season?). That will make a huge difference, IMO. I think we'll defend fine again..we just need some guys to put the biscuit in the basket, to steal a hockey term. Can Randle shoot this year? Can Pruitt be relied on night after night? Etc. -

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Oct 18, 2006 -> 03:21 PM) Which brings a serious question to the board. Is it ever ok to cheer against your team? Because I am borderline on doing that, just to get Bunting out sooner. The quicker he is out, the better the program will be in the long run, his miraculous win against Miami in 04 saved his job and led to more misery ever since with false hope abound. It most definitely is. If you are rooting against them in order for the betterment of the franchise in the long run, then it is perfectly ok. In a given year if the bears are 3-10, you might as well root against them the final three games, because a higher draft pick will be better for the franchise than 3 more wins could do. By rooting against them in a particular game or games, you are rooting for the franchise as a whole in the future. I actually did this with the Blackhawks at the end of this year, hoping to get as high a pick as possible. Because at that point, what would 5 more wins do for the franchise and the fans? Absolutely nothing. -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 11:56 PM) I think it's borderline, Green screwed up because he didn't really include any memorable lines in the tirade like "PLAYOFFS!?!?" or "You play to win the game." but you just know that this press conference will have some excellent staying power. I think "crown their ass" is a good enough line to put it in the hall of fame.

Toss up: Michigan St or Arizona?

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 17, 2006 -> 12:25 AM) A-Rod would bat 3rd here. Anyways, I'm not sure if this has been mentioned but at SI.com it was said that Alex wouldn't waive his no trade to come here because of Ozzie. Who knows if that's true but it's interesting with out a doubt. Interesting. Though if it was either waive his no trade clause and come here (let's say yanks tell him it's this or nothing) or stay in NY, he might reconsider.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 15, 2006 -> 10:33 PM) Well, Juice has ran well since he got the job..... vs. Iowa: 17 carries, 39 yards (and the sacks skewed the numbers) at Michigan State: 17 carries, 103 yards vs. Indiana: 10 carries, 53 yards vs. Ohio: 17 carries, 96 yards However, your right. This team has all the ability in the world to just run it a ton with Pierre, Juice, and Rashard, and then only throw sparingly, using Juice's great ability to go play action and throw it deep, but they haven't done it. Oh, and BTW...it's a final, Boise State stays unbeaten, beating New Mexico State 40-28. NMSU does it NIU style with 0 rushing yards, and does it June Jones style, as their sophomore QB Chase Holbrook goes 50 for 65 for 526 yards passing. Sophomore Chris Williams had 12 for 188 and a TD receiving and sophomore Derek Dubois had 6 for 124 and a TD receiving. Hal Mumme, who is a scumbag and used to coach Kentucky, apparently has quite a passing game. I'm not saying it's a bad thing Juice runs, i am just trying to discuss why the backs don't end up getting more carries. My bad, i didn't make it clear enough what i meant. -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 15, 2006 -> 09:42 PM) Rashard Mendenhall this year: vs. Eastern Illinois: 10 carries, 75 yards, 2 TD's at Rutgers: 2 carries, 22 yards vs. Syracuse: 5 carries, 32 yards vs. Iowa: 5 carries, 14 yards at Michigan State: 5 carries 17 yards vs. Indiana: 5 carries, 29 yards vs. Ohio: 7 carries, 94 yards Season: 39 carries, 283 yards (7.3 average), 3 TD's, 10 receptions, 140 yards, TD Now I know he's had a couple fumbles, and that he'll start next year with E.B. and Pierre gone, but can someone explain why he isn't getting the ball more this year? Between that and E.B. returning punts, i'm baffled, even with Zook the goof as the coach, it makes no sense. Does anyone know why Zook doesn't run the ball more, period, this year? Thomas should be getting 15-20 carries a game, and Mendenhall 5-10. EB should be filling water bottles the entire game (and he finally is now for the most part). The problem with Zook is that his spread offense is not the best run formation...and Juice ends up running out of it as much as the backs do. I like the spread offense for certain things, but sometimes you need to do some normal i formations and pro sets and pound the ball. -
QUOTE(Jimbo @ Oct 15, 2006 -> 08:42 PM) No we just had a great late night, hosted a ton of recruitd, hosted a Bulls v. Sonics game and got off the hook for the most part from the NCAA. LOL. Hopefully your recruits can win you more than, oh, zero games in the tournament this year. I'll take actual wins over recruiting 'wins' any day of the week.

QUOTE(Jimbo @ Oct 15, 2006 -> 08:35 PM) I dont think you get the point, Florida won it all and is recruiting strong. This year they have 3 of the top 100 coming into school. 2007, they have the number 3 pg, and 3 in top 50. Illinois makes the finals, and their classes suck each year since. Stop drinking the illini kool-aid, the freshman last year were pretty average as well. I think you have enough s*** at Kansas to keep you occupied for a while.
