The last dance for Chief Illiniwek?

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 06:37 PM) Youppi for UIUC mascot! The Chief is of a time but Youppi! is timeless. ROTFLMAO. Yes, changing a mascot would make us lose home field advantage and hurt recruiting..suuuuuuuuuuuure. Then again, nothing can really help the Illini football teams. Actually, with all the alumni money they might lose out on, it could hurt the athletic program. Pretty logical. -
This is awesome news. Angled seats are 20 times better than what we have now...because with angled seats you won't have to look through 3-4 sections worth of aisles to see the mound and plate.

Devil Rays @ Sox - August 31 Game Thread

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 30, 2006 -> 10:19 PM) I'm not good with just two. Yeah, because those games are over. Right now we can either go 1-0 or 0-1. Who makes the playoffs isn't based on series wins, it's based on overall number of wins. I hate when people look at only winning series. Just a few weeks ago we couldn't sweep a series to save our lives...how good would 3 more wins look right now? Saying 2 of 3 is ok before you've even played the third game is such a loser attitude. -
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 30, 2006 -> 11:54 PM) So anyone who does not "play the game the right way" shall be hit by a Sox pitcher because Ozzie Guillen wants everyone to "play the right way"? Since when is Ozzie the baseball police? Exactly. And to CanofCorn, they threw right back at AJ, disproving your point.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 30, 2006 -> 10:12 PM) Dan Berstein? Well, i agree with him. This team doesn't need stupid distractions such as an injury or a brawl. I don't think hitting Young accomplished anything for the White Sox.
-
Pretty stupid. Who are the White Sox and/or Freddy to decide how Young needs to be punished? The goal is to win the world series. How hitting Delmon Young contributes to winning the world series, i'll never know. All it could do is hurt our chances, after one of our guys gets hit and injured or there's a brawl. It was stupid.

QUOTE(SnB @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 11:50 PM) And like others have said, don't fall behind........period. That stuff worked in high school, but in college it's just way too hard to catch up. It's easy to keep up if you do one or the other, like i said earlier. I was one of those kids who, when i was home, didn't want to do more work than i needed to because i was lazy and didn't go to class. You think you'll sit down and read, but instead SnB IMs you with a new record-setting sorority girl he saw that morning and you don't get anything accomplished for an hour. Then you play video games. Then you're drunk. So, i decided it was easier for me to go to class and keep up rather than have to do all the readings or risk falling behind big time. Besides, there's no good games on at 10 in the morning...until March. I'd rather have the night free to watch some games/play poker/drink, then have to read to catch up. Just like SnB, i would only not go to the huge lectures. My 2nd semester junior year i had 4 classes, and i think i missed 3-4 combined the entire semester. I just had classes i couldn't miss for one reason or another. That's just how it works sometimes. PS: Don't blow smoke in people's faces in college, unlike us, they will knock your teeth out

QUOTE(SnB @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 09:37 PM) i've definitely fallen into category number 2. My first year I went to almost every class. Last year, not so much. It's all about going to almost every one the first week or so, figuring out which ones you need to go to everytime and which ones you don't. Like this semester, my nutrition class, the lectures are straight out of the book. If i just keep up with the readings, lecture is pointless. While my econ class, I will have to go to everyday just because of the crazy material and the way the class is structured. I've always been the kind that will learn more reading and doing problems than taking notes on a lecture, where all the same info is in the book. Just for the record, i had nothing to do with your attendance problems last year.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 10:47 PM) So, you guys would pretty much recommend skipping the lectures where you could pretty much get the info from reading the books or from internet notes? I had two classes today. One was my English class. Mainly, my teacher -- seemed like a real cool guy -- said that a lot of the writings would be done in class. Plus, it's an 11:00 class, so its not like one of those pain-in-the-ass classes where I have to wake up real early. The other was my history class. This one seemed like a class I could miss a lot more, but unfortunately the professor said that you can only miss a maximum of six classes per semester. Oh well, I'll be sure to use 'em all, I guess... Keith...do one or the other - go to the lectures and take some notes or make sure you do the readings or notes. You fall into trouble when you say "i don't feel like going to class, i'll do the readings later," then you fall behind on readings and it becomes a pain in the ass to catch up. It can be done, it's just more work than you should need to do. If you know you don't want to do the readings this weekend, then just make the trek to class and sit there and pay attention. You'd be surprised how much you won't fall behind at all if you just actually attend class, even if you fall behind on readings. The class will tell you if you can skip or not. If attendance is part of the grade, go...don't piss away easy points. If there are random quizzes...go...you can't afford to give away 20% of your grade because you missed most of them. If it's a lecture where the teacher literally just reads the notes, or even fills in stuff from the notes you bring to class...my advice is to find a friend or two, and you guys rotate going to class to get the notes. All in all it's smart to find a buddy or two in class early on that can save you when you miss a day of notes, or can write your name on the attendance sheet, etc. I was one of the kids who planned my absences a lot, and went to every class before and after planned absences. I went to class the majority of the time because you only have class for like 2-4 hours a day...you have a ton of free time to begin with, so what's another hour. The only hard ones to go to were the 8am classes, etc. In that class where you can only have 6 absences, my advice is to save them. You are better off having 5 in the last few weeks available to you as opposed to burning 3 in the first 3 weeks and be forced to go to class when you're hungover as hell one day, or really need to study for a test that's right after that class. That's another big time i'd "skip" class - if i had a test the hour after it, just to do some last minute preparations and stuff. You'll figure it out in due time. But early on, just go to almost every class, it will make it easy to figure out things later on.

QUOTE(SnB @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 02:00 PM) i wonder if he's transferred the legend of his title reign to a new state? My guess is he hasn't met a challenge yet. The belt is still in a box, yet to be unpacked.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 03:42 AM) All I can say, that's hard enough to remember now, I dunno how the heck you would do it if you were actually drunk. LOL when you are sober this game is easy, it's just remembering 4 cards and telling people to drink...it's still fun, but it's even better once everyone's "feeling it." Once you play it once you would remember the rules even when completely tanked.
-
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 03:23 AM) Alright, I need rules to this game, it sounds like fun. You need like 4-6 players and a deck of cards. Make a pyramid of cards, face down, in the middle of the table. A pyramid with a row of 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. Then deal 4 cards, face down, to each player. The players then can look at their cards ONCE, for however long they want. They need to know number, but not suit. They then put them face down in an order in which they can remember them. Then the game begins. The dealer picks up the first card from the row of 5 and puts it face up. Let's say it's a 9. If anyone has a 9 they point at someone else and say "drink." However, even if they don't have a 9, they can try to bluff it and tell someone to drink anyway. So the player being told to drink has two options: 1) Drink and give him credit for the card or 2) Say "bulls***" If the "drinkee" doesn't challenge by saying bulls***, they drink their beer. For each card in the row of 5, they drink one sip. Row of 4 is 2. Row of 3 is 3, Row of 2 is 4, and the last card is 5 drinks. If you want to speed it up, you make the drinks 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 for each row. If you have a double 9, you can tell someone to drink twice or tell two people to drink once. If the giver of the drinks is told "bulls***", they must correctly identify the card and show it to the group. If they are able to do this, the drinkee drinks double the row (in this case, 2 drinks). So if this happened on the final card...10 drinks. If the drinker is told "bulls***" and lifts up the wrong card...or doesn't have it and was bluffing, they now drink double that row. So once "bulls***" is said, someone's drinking double. When you end up getting rid of a card because you were bulls***ted and had to show, you put it at the bottom of the deck and pick up a new card. You can look at this card once, and put it down with the rest of the cards. HOWEVER, you are not allowed to look at the other cards you still have. You flip over cards starting with the first row, all 5 of them, then move onto the 2nd row, and do all 4 of those, one at a time. When the entire pyramid has been flipped over, there's one last bit...each player must name the cards they have in front of them correctly. For each card they call incorrectly, it's 2 drinks. That's pretty much it. This game is a lot of fun, especially when you start to get drunk and forget what cards you have. Then a jack comes up, and you know you have it...and mess up where it was in your order of cards. Also, there is strategy with the bluffing and setup...if you can tell someone to "drink one" in the first row of cards because you claim you have an ace, and then the ace comes up again...you have them set up. Or, what if you tell someone to drink twice? There's no way the person would say drink twice if they didn't actually have two of those cards, right...? Again, this game gets real run after you've had a few in you and you literally space out on all four cards you have at random points in the game. Questions, just ask...it's really not that hard. Hopefully i didn't leave anything out.
-
Because i'm a vet, and i play that game random as hell with what i say and my antics. I mean it's not poker, it's a drinking game
-
Hey hey...it was Steve who got dominated, not me...until i forgot my own cards.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 03:06 AM) They've officially driven me to drinking a crap load but what are you going to do. Time for some beeramid
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 03:08 AM) Eh, there is no correlation. The point is just that Widger got blamed a crap load for stuff he really shouldn't have been blamed for. He was not good, but he certainly wasn't deserving of getting blamed for every crappy outing our starters had with him behind the plate. There could be some i guess...wasn't their grumblings about guys in the clubhouse being upset? Who knows. And that is impossible to put into numbers/record. I never blamed Widger for much, i put the blame elsewhere, so i guess it's not a big deal to me either way.

McCarthy must be inserted into the rotation...

QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 02:13 AM) With all this McCarthy support, why does the fan club only have 12 members? I'd say owning the only McCarthy jersey that BMac's parents have ever seen qualifies me, so make it 13 -
We're under .500 since the all star break...i don't see a ton of correlation between the two, especially if Widger was a terrible game caller.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 01:28 AM) It was probably slotted that way before the season in case ESPN wanted to pick it up for two teams that were supposed to be two of the best in the AL in the middle of the stretch drive. Yeah, i figured that...but saw that Pads @ Giants is a 7:00 start, so i figured that was the ESPN game. -
