NEWSFLASH: Ex-Sox Santo elected to Hall of Fame
BigEdWalsh replied to StatManDu's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 6, 2011 -> 12:04 PM) He doesn't belong in, and neither do quite a few others that have made it. The HOF is becoming a watered down popularity contest, rather than what it was intended to be. Was Santo a good 3B in his time? Yes. Was he one of the best of all time? No. He was not. The HOF is really the Hall of The Very Good. There are a lot of players in there who probably shouldn't be. The Hall just isn't as exclusive as it originally was. I think it's sad though that Santo didn't get in while he was alive, and I hated the guy as a player and a broadcaster. This, just as now it will probably be the case with Minnie, not getting in while he's still alive. -
If I were to revise my list the cigarette smoking man would be on it.

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Dec 1, 2011 -> 01:33 PM) She and her flying monkeys scared my s***less when I was a little boy. The Wicked Witch and the Evil Queen topped my list because they're the only villains to have ever truly made me cower in fear. Those flying monkeys have starred in many a nightmare of mine.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 30, 2011 -> 01:41 PM) I have another Daniel Day-Lewis villain on my list rather than Plainview, Ditto. Go figure.

QUOTE (Cali @ Nov 30, 2011 -> 02:48 PM) Kinda sad at the same time Ya had to bring us down.

Seems like a definite step in the right direction. Hooray!!!

Milkman and I think a lot alike in terms of movies. I began to notice it with the Sports movie list. And now we're the only 2 to pick Dr. Szell and Amon Goethe. It's creepin' me out.

I haven't taken 1st in a Soxtalk basketball league since 2006. It's time to reclaim the championship!

Why is monkey so high on the list?

Your excitement level for the 2012 White Sox Pt.1
BigEdWalsh replied to Cali's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I'm about a 9. I'll be attending my first ever spring training so my excitement level is pretty high. -
QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 07:03 PM) BTW, I just realized I think I have an all-male list. I think I did too. When trying to think of female villains, I just can't get past my ex-wife.

I like favorite movie villains if we were to go with something else. Not sure what I dislike more, animated movies or comic book/superhero stuff. Don't watch South Park. Easy choice here, I went with defunct sports teams. Standup comedians would be my next choice. OK. Changing my vote to movie villains (from defunct sports teams).

LET'S MAKE A LIST OCTOBER '11 - FAVORITE SPORTS MOVIES

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 04:09 AM) Ugh, I feel old. But to me The Sandlot speaks to anyone who grew up playing pick-up baseball games over the summer. Exactly. I'm 61 and I listed The Sandlot for that very reason. I fondly remember playing baseball nearly every day when I was a kid just like the kids in this movie. I was surprised at how high A League of Their Own placed. I had it on my list although not nearly that high. As usual, good fun. Thanks for your efforts Knight!! -

I've never thought Caddyshack was so funny. It has a few moments but for the most part it was a pretty bad movie. -

Six of 15 people on a WHITE SOX message board didn't include Eight Men Out on a list of favorite sports movies? -
QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 28, 2011 -> 08:30 PM) Seeing the Cards celebrate gave me goosebumps. Likewise. I almost always pull for the AL, but the hatred I have for everything that is Texas Ranger couldn't let me do it. I'm happy for St. Louis and happier for Tony LaRussa.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Oct 27, 2011 -> 08:08 AM) I'm surprised only two other people listed 61*. I've never seen it and I call myself a baseball fan...shame on me. -

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 11:29 PM) Poker is not a sport in any sense. I just want to clarify that. If poker is a sport so is Go Fish. -

I've never heard of The Program. I'll have to check that one out. Neither Happy Gilmore or The Waterboy were on my list but would have been if I had thought of them. I'd have ranked Happy Gilmore higher of the two. Oh well. Mighty Ducks 2, bleech! No offense intended. -

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Oct 17, 2011 -> 02:37 PM) I submitted my list. I actually surprised myself and came up with more than 25 movies. So I had to pare it down. As I looked at it I realized that over half of them were baseball movies. A lot of comedies as well. I came up with about 30 and had to pare it down to 25 too. And most of mine were baseball movies also. Like with every list we make I probably hurried too fast and in so doing forgot a few that would have made my list had I remembered them. No Big Lebowski on my list. I don't think of it as a sports movie but I suppose it is. -

Tony Pena: He gawn (thank you Lord!). -
Former Weezer bass player Mikey Welsh, who also found success in his second career as an artist, died in a Chicago hotel room. He was in Chicago to see Weezer perform and hang out with the guys. Sad.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 04:10 AM) Yep. Don't forget about soccer. And if we do the list, would we include teams from the USFL, ABA, WHL, etc.? Tons of teams there...some with memorable names. Soccer is real easy to forget about, but heck yeah USFL, ABA, WHL. I was even thinking about baseballs' old Federal League and the Negro leagues.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 3, 2011 -> 01:48 PM) Best defunct sports team names. I like it.
