QUOTE (balfanman @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 03:32 PM) Mr Bernstein is really going out on a limb with breaking news there! Between Bernstein's report, Terry's "guy" who breaks stories after they happen, and Jason Goff's "immenent" report (referring to his report that Wade/Bosh were going to sign with the Bulls, but, of course, things changed), that show is dripping with breaking information just waiting to burst.

Still wouldn't be surprised at anything the Sox do (or don't do) whether it's nothing given the lack of minor league talent, finding a way to land Dunn, or turning to pitching for a veteran starter who can eat innings.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 10:28 AM) I thought about Branyan during the game last night. I'm surprised his name hasn't come up much. Can somebody post Branyon's numbers? I've never big a big fan, so hoping I'm wrong about him.

QUOTE (chwhtsox @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 09:52 AM) but would Steve Stone think that's significant is the question... We'll get someone but I'm willing to bet, that someone is a name nobody's heard and we didn't even know he was available. That's a good point. Even though Lilly may not be a "significant" player, it may be a significant trade to acquire a guy like him if it fills a hole in our rotation.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 10:15 AM) Did he say this based on what he's hearing or his feeling in how KW has dealt in the past? I didn't hear it, but my guess is that he's probably using a combination of all the rumors combined with Williams' aggressive trades in the past.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 09:22 AM) What else would be huge? (Adrian!) I think it would have to be a move for Fielder or Dunn. I'm not sure I'd call trading for a guy like Ted Lilly significant.

GT: White Sox @ A's 7/25, 3:05 CT, CSN
spiderman replied to justBLAZE's topic in 2010 Season in Review
So, why is it that the White Sox are required to give up their best prospects (Beckham or Viceido) and then we see the best starter remaining on the market go for a bunch of garbage? Are the Sox lesser prospects so bad that they can't get pull off a trade like this? -
QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 05:26 PM) Angels Trade Joe Saunders By Zach Links [July 25 at 5:19pm CST] The Angels have acquired Dan Haren from Arizona, according to Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News (via Twitter). Arizona will receive Joe Saunders, Patrick Corbin, Rafael Rodriguez, and a player to be named later in return. Saunders? Seriously.

Oakland is decent team, but just sucks to lose 2 out of 3 this weekend. Oh well. Take 5 out of 7 at home. -
QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 24, 2010 -> 12:11 PM) Dunn will be a White Sox and Oswalt will be a Phillie by July 31st per someone I know with the Phillies. This person who works with the Phillies knows what the White Sox, Astros and Nationals are doing?

D.DeJesus News: Link The Royals are reportedly listening to offers for OF David DeJesus. It's a weak trade deadline to some degree so a player like DeJesus, who does a lot of things well and nothing outstanding, is drawing some attention. The Royals recognize this and that's why their asking price for DeJesus is "silly", one front office exec told Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports. Kansas City knows that, and its asking price, one interested front-office type said, is “silly.” The Royals want a major league-ready prospect, along with at least one midlevel prospect or a pair of lower-level players. Perhaps it’s not so silly when considering the options Kansas City holds on DeJesus. The Royals can pick up an affordable $6 million option and dangle him again in the offseason or next trade deadline. They can decline the option, offer him arbitration and take a couple draft picks. They can pick up the option, hold on to DeJesus and hope their farm system – quickly becoming the best in all of baseball – starts spitting out enough next year to patch together a contender. As I've said before, the Royals are willing to wait until they get an offer that pleases them. If they don't trade him, then they get a solid player relatively cheap through 2011. Or, as Passan suggests, they can dangle him again. It's a win-win situation. J.Soria News: Link The Royals haven't given any indication they wouldn't part with him if the right deal came along. According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Yankees "would love" to have Soria. Two players Yankees would love to have: Dunn, Soria. Nationals' price on Dunn exorbitant. Royals would need to be overwhelmed. Just because they apparently covet him doesn't mean they'll get him, as MLB Trade Rumors explains. The Royals would need to be "overwhelmed" to part with Soria, who makes $3MM this season and is under team control through 2014. He has 25 saves already and has posted 11.1 K/9 this season, which makes him one of the more appealing relievers available. The Yankees have had inconsistent performances from righties Joba Chamberlain, Chan Ho Park and David Robertson, which no doubt contributes to their interest in Soria.

Can the White Sox really afford to have 3 starting pitchers (Peavy, Buerhle and a guy like Haren) making 40%+ of the payroll?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 10:26 AM) I think there's 2 things missing from our system. We have a handful of guys near the top who look like legitimate impact presences, or at least look like they've got a 50% chance or better of becoming them. Hudson, Viciedo, Flowers, Morel. We've got some talent buried at the lower levels as well, but that needs time to develop. The 2 things we're missing are...1. the sort of in-between, talented, good number guys who have started to establish themselves but who are a while away that KW has been willing to trade before (i.e. Gio, DLS, Carter, Richard, etc.)., and 2., the 2009 draft class. I still think the best bet here is to stand pat unless we get a steal by taking on salary. We don't have the bullets right now. I'm not sure even our top ranked guys, outside of Beckman and probably Mitchell, at least, before his injury) stack up that well against other teams. Are our top guys - you mentioned Hudson, Vicideo, Flowers and Morel - mid level guys on other teams? How do Beckham and Mitchell stack up on other teams? I think Williams is going to do something, and it may be pretty big (Dunn for example). I'm just not sure how he accomplishes a significant move with the minor league talent that he's willing to move (assuming Beckham if off the market). Kenny could do a number of things to improve the team - a DH, another starting pitcher, a left handed middle reliever - but it's now a matter of how much of an impact can he make with the talent he has to trade.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 12:53 AM) Ok, with all the talks of trades, who does everyone think will get traded? Here's how I rank them. Traded in Big Move Only: Daniel Hudson, Tyler Flowers Traded in a Mid-Level Move/Second (or Third) Piece in Big Move: Brent Morel, David Holmberg, Miguel Gonzalez Throw In in Big Deal: Carlos Torres, Kyle Bellamy, Jhonny Nunez, Brandon Short, Jon Gilmore, Eduardo Escobar, Brandon Hynick Not Getting Traded: Dayan Viciedo (I think Kenny looks at him like he did/does Gordon), Jordan Danks (the bad K% and the fact that D1 hasn't signed on longterm), Jared Mitchell (injury), Trayce Thompson (injury) Josh Phegley (injury). Wow. We have some bad prospects.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 09:58 AM) http://www.sbnation.com/2010/7/9/1560810/c...lb-trade-rumors I also saw this on the Sportscenter bottom ticker. This pretty much wraps up a second consecutive World Series title for the Yankees. Don't you just love sports? That's a pretty steep hill to climb to beat that pitching staff in October.

Let's just take 2 of 3 (or even sweep KC), and we'll pick up ground on somebody hopefully.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jun 28, 2010 -> 10:32 AM) Yes, tanking right away coming back to playing AL teams will definitely take away the optimism. And I agree that I don't think they will do a 180 and start losing a bunch of games. NL teams (okay, weak NL teams) or not, the Sox still had an 11 game winning streak. The Sox of 3 weeks ago would not have won 11 in a row against the Toledo Mud Hens. The winning streak was characterized by outstanding starting pitching, great relief pitching, stellar defense, and some timely hitting. The hitting is what concerns me about going back to playing AL teams. The Sox will need more hits, more RBIs, and more HRs. Do we think that the Sox could have won all those game without hitting a HR against AL teams? Maybe because of the pitching, but maybe not. My biggest concern is the hitting as well. I feel on most days, the White Sox are going to get a quality start from the starting pitching, and the backend of the bullpen is a major strength of this team. If they can muster 4-5 runs, they are going to win their share of games.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jun 28, 2010 -> 06:15 AM) Who knew that winning 15 of 18 and having an 11 game winning streak would create such hate and discontent. Take it easy guys. Granted the Sox beat up on a bunch of NL teams, some of them bad. But before this winning streak the Sox couldn't beat a bad Indians team and couldn't string together more than two wins. The Sox need to continue winning series, that's it. Another 11 game winning streak would be great, but I'll take 2 of 3 from KC and then 2 of 3 against Texas...both series on the road. And the way the team has played, I think it's a possibility. I for one think that the Sox are a much better team than they showed up until about 2 weeks ago. They may not be as good as they've looked recently, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them take over first place soon. I'm more optimistic than I was (obviously) a few weeks ago, but if they go back to the AL and go 4-10 in the next 2 weeks or so, a lot of the optimism is gone, and it becomes clear that the White Sox benefitted from playing bad NL teams (outside of Atlanta). Now, I don't think they will go 4-10 as long the starting pitching keeps them in games which I believe it will for the most part, outside of the occasional bad start.
-
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jun 28, 2010 -> 12:43 AM) No we didn't and I'm sick of people saying that. We beat their bullpen, we beat the team despite him pitching well, sure those answers are fine by me... but we did not "beat him." He pitched really well and even though his offense had nothing to back him up, he still got no L in his loss column. BTW I agree with Tru.... up until the Atlanta series where that was the true test for me on this club as they are the "legit" team they beat in this stretch so I'm sold. Now... if they get swept by the Royals, then I might have to rethink things with the "beck to the AL teams" argument. True, we didn't beat him directly, but getting to the bullpen is sometimes the only way to a legitimate ace pitcher.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 28, 2010 -> 09:48 AM) Why would be be interested in Zambrano? We don't make moves for the sake of making moves. We aren't. This was just conversation for the sake of having conversation.
-
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jun 27, 2010 -> 10:53 PM) Then again they might say yes if the Sox took all of Z's contract. They have a lot of bad contracts. Don Cooper has admitted he doesn't want him. His immaturity is making Bradley to out to be a saint. I can't imagine any ML team taking him. The Cubs wouldn't want anything back if they found a team stupid enough to pay Zambrano's entire salary. The Cubs would be overjoyed to find a team willing to do that, but it won't happen.
-
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 27, 2010 -> 10:49 PM) You MIGHT take someone as polarizing as him, if he was the Zambrano of old that was pretty good. No way you screw your team up now with that mess, regardless of the deal. Unless it was for Randy Williams, then you think about it. If he was pitching like the Zambrano of old, I don't think the Cubs would be looking to trade him, and, even if they were, they probably wouldn't be picking up any of his salary and wouldn't take back our garbage (for example, Linebrink).
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 27, 2010 -> 04:11 PM) If you really think the Royals are better than the Braves or even the Cubs, you really need to get a bit of a reality check. Go look at interleague records this year, it's almost even. Atlanta is better than KC, and I won't argue if you have the Cubs as better than the Royals (on paper, they should be), but I think it's pretty close.
-
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 27, 2010 -> 08:29 PM) Plus there is no place for Zambrano. He would not start for us right now, nor would he unseat Jenks, Thornton, Putz, Pena or Santos in the pen. I'd have a problem making such a deal for a long reliever. Plus, don't be so ready to give up on Teahen after a bad couple of months. I'm not giving up on Teahan, he'll probably return to a primary role at 3B after he returns, but I hope next season, he's seen as reserve player.
-
QUOTE (ChiSox420* @ Jun 27, 2010 -> 08:21 PM) What about a trade for Zambrano where the cubs would take on Linebrink+Teahan and a decent prospect or two and cover around half of his salary. He could be send into the bullpen for the year and figure out the rest next year. Am I crazyy? I don't think the White Sox would want the distraction, despite Guillen's relationship with Zambrano. Secondly, I'm not sure he's better than any of the Sox starters, and I certainly don't think the White Sox would rather have him for $9 million (assuming he makes around $18 million) over Garcia or Floyd, who are making much less. If the Cubs are successful at moving him, I think they may have to pick up even more than the $9 million. About the only thing I agree upon is that they will have to take back another team's garbage.
