  1. I think this might be one of the biggest benefits after his high K rate: More pickoffs than stolen bases, and only two stolen bases in 215 IP. That is pretty impressive.
  2. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 02:09 PM) Ken Rosenthal says we will receive $5 million from Arizona in the deal: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5163266 Well, unless you edited the text, they have changed it to: I know that is semantics, but your quote just says "The White Sox will receive $5 million in the deal." not "The White Sox will receive about $5 million in the deal." However, I would believe Rosenthal before I believe some anonymous source from USA Today. The USA Today link also says that Vazquez will only make $23 million over the next two years, which is wrong.
  3. QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 01:07 PM) So the Yankees, Philles and D/Backs are giving us almost $30M to field a compeitive team???? Amazing. At $7.5M a year this is a great deal. I am sorry Willie Mays Jr. had to go. I find it somewhat interesting that Young and Rowand are gone but Anderson is still here. I like Wilder and think he knows what he is doing. That $30 Million will probably be more than the full team payrolls of the Marlins or Devil Rays in 2006!
  4. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 01:04 PM) Wow. Considering they initially weren't willing to pay anything in a Vazquez deal, that's shocking. It also goes to show what they think of Chris Young. With Vizcaino arb eligible, the money is close to a wash this season with Duque getting 4.5 Vizcaino around 2.0 and 4.0 from the D-Backs, that's only $1 million the Sox are adding to the payroll. Only adding about $1 mill to the payroll makes this deal worth it. Great job again KW!
  5. The Vazquez deal only adds $1.5 to the payroll for 2006. He is due $11.5 in 2006 but the D-backs are picking up $8 million total ($4 mill per yr), so the Sox will pay $7.5 for him. El Duque was owed $4.625 for 2006 and Vizcaino was due at least $1.3. So their totals would be right around $6 million. Overall a net increase of $1.5 million is not bad at all.
  6. I don't know if this has been posted, but it looks like the D-Backs will pay $8 million: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/20...s-vazquez_x.htm
  7. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 11:50 AM) Yes, I think a guy who at worst is a solid #5 starter and at best could be huge is at least equal to El Duque (5.11, 4329857438 years old and injured a lot), Vizcaino (a decent middle reliever but nothing special) and an OF prospect (when we have Anderson, Owens and Sweeney in the wings). This is true to me, as long as we get that cash (because Vazquez is not a $12.5M pitcher). Looks like they are actually going to pay $8 Million! http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/20...s-vazquez_x.htm
  8. QUOTE(jenksd @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 12:31 PM) LETS TRADE GARLAND FOR ROWAND GUYS That would be hilarious in a stomach pain kinda way. Maybe Garland for Rowand, Gio, and Haig.
  9. QUOTE(Sox Hustler @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 12:01 PM) Am I the only one afraid of what our bullpen will look like next season? Hermy was great before his back gave him fits, but even if his back is ok this season should we expect the same from him?? Then Politte, I am not sure of his 2nd half numbers, but he got saved quite a few times and yet again another great year from a marginal reliever. Can Jenks handle the job? I am not worried about Cotts. Vizcaino was good in the 2nd half, hes gone. No Marte, while he was bad he could still come back. I hope KW has a plan, which I know he does I just hope it works. Our bullpen is looking a little off at this point. Vizcaino was just an average middle reliever; he was saved so many times by Neal, Cliff, Hermie, and Jenks. Look at his numbers: 3.73 ERA 1.47 WHIP .275 BAA The ERA was skewd because the guys after him got his guys out. He was mainly thrown in there when the Sox were losing and to eat innings. Here is a nice stat about that: The Sox record when Viz pitched was 30-35. He only had 17 appearances where he did not give up a hit or walk out of 65 appearances, and most of those were 1 or 2 batters. He always reminded me of a Batting Practice Pitcher or Shot Putter. Marte was too inconsistent and even though he has good stuff, there seems to be too many mental issues (confidence, etc) with him. So you could say those guys were addition by subtraction as long as the Sox can at least bring in some average middle relief.
  10. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 12:04 PM) Curt Schilling. Smoltz
  11. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 11:53 AM) Who is The Underground? Is he a new wrestler in the WWF? That sounds good though. The Yankees had originally sent the Diamondbacks $6 million to help pay for Vazquez's contract so we are getting almost all of that. The Yanks gave the D-Backs $9 million, or $3 million per year, so there is $6 million left, which the D-Backs are supposed to give $5 million to the Sox. So they get to pocket $1 million.
  12. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 11:44 AM) The way that Brian Dolgin keeps wording it on the Sportscenter update, it sounds like the Sox are sending $5M to Arizona. Which makes zero sense. That would be horrible. I really hope it is the other way around. The news posts about it say D-Backs give up Vazquez and cash for El Duqe, Viz, and Young.
  13. Way too soon on this one. Very similar to the Thome deal BEFORE Paulie resigned. Right now I would say this is a terrible move based off what the Sox had and needed right now. Vazquez is overpaid and overrated. I never liked Vizcaino, but I thought giving him up with El Duque would have been enough. When you throw in Young, then the D-Backs made out like bandits. They were going to have to trade Vazquez anyway, so while in that situation they get El Duque, Vizcaino, and Young, and unload Vazquez's big contract is pretty huge. The only thing I can think of is that KW is going to use Vazquez (wants to be closer to PR) or Garland as trade bait for Tampa Bay's Crawford. If that happens hopefully the Sox could get a prospect or reliever as well making the net effect: (+) Add - Crawford, prospect/reliever Keep - Garland/Vazquez (-) Lose - El Duque, Vizcaino, Young, Garland/Vazquez
  14. I would say about a 20% increase from last year which is not that bad considering the WS win and the inflated contracts this offseason: 2005 - $75,178,000 20% = $15 million increase to about $90 million

  16. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 07:32 AM) This must mean that Garland or Count is going to be traded for something. I just can't see how McCarthy can spend a full year in AAA after what he did in the majors. A trade will probably happen that will get the Sox some relievers and some top prospects to replenish the farm system. I really hope the Sox don't get stuck with the full contract since the Yanks are already paying $3 mill a year to the D-backs.
  17. I guess the thread just needs to be moved from TW to PHT since it is basically official.
  18. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 05:59 PM) Nice deal for Oakland. Almost makes up for giving Loiaza three years... That's one helluva defensive OF there. Kotsay - Bradley - Swisher. Jay Payton then goes.....
  19. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 05:49 PM) That is even worse. That signals Frank to Minnesota or Frank to Cleveland. Here is a link (from Dec 6th) saying that Frank is close to signing with the A's (per Gammons), but it also says that the A's are unlikely to get Bradley, so go figure: http://www.athleticsnation.com/story/2005/12/6/15938/6250
  20. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 04:59 PM) I still don't understand why Contreras would be eligible for free agency after next season. He has not had 6 years in the majors. He signed a $32 million, four-year contract (2003, 04, 05, 06). So salary arbitration in 2006.
  21. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 03:32 PM) It all depends... How great does Mark Buehrle look right now at the $9.5 million he would get in 2007, or Freddy Garcia for $8 million in 2006 and 2007? Some long term deals are damned smart when you look back on how much they get run up in the short term. Good point! With the way the market seems to be going, $10-12 mill a year will be a steal 3 or 4 years from now.
  22. QUOTE(G&T @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 03:18 PM) Rosenthal Says a package could be Garland and Young and the D-Backs would want Vasquez's salary covered. I don't think any move resembling this would go down. That would be a bad move IMO. Garland and Young, then pay the FULL contract when the Yanks are already paying $3 mill per year?
  23. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 02:46 PM) One humble request: Can someone please post the groundball-flyball ratios for both Garland and Vazquez. That is something that needs a serious looking-at. 2005 Garland 332 / 230 GB / FB - 1.44 G/F ratio - 115 K's / 47 BB's in 221.0 IP Vazquez 269 / 227 GB / FB - 1.18 G/F ratio - 192 K's / 46 BB's in 215 IP Jon is a much better Ground Ball pitcher, but Vazquez also struck out 77 more batters.
  24. QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 01:09 PM) The Sox were built on run prevention (pitching + defense) because the market was undervaluing these skills. That is what made the Sox so efficient with their modest payroll in 2005. Couldn't have said it better myself.
  25. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 11:56 AM) What if it ends up being that the Sox trade Contreras instead of Garland? The DBacks have liked Contreras for a long time. I don't see that happening with the contracts unless they throw in Shawn Green (from Des Plaines). Vazquez and Green for Contreras and Anderson.
