QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 5, 2007 -> 02:53 PM) Massett has been a God send for the two games he has pitched. This would have been really ugly if he had pitched like a guy in his first two games in the majors. Seriously, if Buehrle is out for any amount of time, Masset has to be considered for the 5th spot.I just can't believe we got someone like him + Danks for B-Mac. He might end up being the best of the bunch.

QUOTE(JohnCangelosi @ Apr 5, 2007 -> 07:40 AM) Ok, let me fall off the rocker here a little bit. Is today's game a "must win"? A must win from the standpoint of our mentality/confidence coming out of the gate here. Thoughts? I would not call it a must win, but it is damn sure important not to get swept at home vs a Division rival. That is a big hole to climb out of. The only saving grace is there will be 159 games left to make up ground. Buehrle needs to show up.

Buehrle to let Sox match any offers
QUOTE(shoota @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 01:26 PM) This shows Buehrle doesn't want to leave the organization, but wants a market-value contract.I just hope he pitches better, because otherwise there will be no point in keeping him around.

Baseball Prospectus power rankings
BP does a better job at taking a look back than they do at taking a look forward. For the Sox, it looks like most of these low predictions took their 2nd half of last year and doubled it for an entire year. If the Sox did do that for an entire year, they would lose 90 games.

Baseball Prospectus power rankings
QUOTE(SABR Sox @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 07:07 AM) I think PECOTA is overrating the age-factor here a bit too much. You have Thome finishing with less than 30 homers, J.D. losing about 3 wins with bat alone, Crede taking a huge step back too. They rave about have the "old-ness" of Thome, Contreras, Dye, etc. is going to catch up to them this year and how we'll see massive declines. I forsee declines, especially in the cases of Thome and Dye, but not to PECOTA's extent. What surprises me about Thome is if you look at his last two full years (2006 and 2004), they are nearly identical. (2006 and 2004) Games - 143 and 143 ABs - 490 and 509 Runs - 108 and 97 Hits - 141 and 139 2B - 26 and 28 HR - 42 and 42 RBI - 109 and 105 BB - 107 and 104 K - 147 and 144 AVG - .288 and .274 OBP - .416 and .396 SLG - .598 and .581 I would think it would be an easier projection to just average these two and then decrease the value by a few for age: Games - 141 ABs - 484 Runs - 99 Hits - 137 2B - 24 HR - 39 RBI - 104 BB - 103 K - 146 AVG - .280 OBP - .405 SLG - .588

Sox 4th in total 2007 payroll
QUOTE(ScottyDo @ Apr 3, 2007 -> 03:46 PM) That's only 21 players Sorry, that was in response to RME's quote Yeah, that is why I listed the "other players" making less than 415K since I didn't check who made the roster. If you just add 4 players making around that number, that would be an additional $1.660 for something around $96.225 paid to players, then you have to add the buyouts and other money to get to the exact figure.

- Bad Opening Day starts
From Elias: Contreras was the fourth pitcher since 1900 to allow eight runs while pitching fewer than two innings on Opening Day. Ouch!- Bad Opening Day starts
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Apr 2, 2007 -> 10:16 PM) Since people are always looking for connections to previous seasons when the Sox were successful, Floyd Bannister's line was similar to Contreras'. Which means.............WE'RE GOING TO WIN THE DIVISION!!!! YES!! Winning Ugly is back! Also: What did the Sox do in 1917?- Opening Day: White Sox vs. Indians, 4/2/07 (L)
Man, that was the exact reason why they had Tad down in the order.- Opening Day: White Sox vs. Indians, 4/2/07 (L)
