QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 01:20 AM) I don't need to be blitzed to enjoy a game, especially one like a national championship or mlb playoff game. People who get blitzed and go to games, IMO, have no respect for the game and are bad sports fans. IMO, it tells me that you need to be drunk to enjoy a game. Many college students do this, i think it's pretty pathetic. No, you just save it all up for the 24 hour stupor that is Soxfest.

QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 09:42 AM) I'm writing off my United Center World Series Game 4 tickets. It went to White Sox Charities! It's not 100% deductable, only a %. As are split the pot tickets, and wristband purchases.

QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 09:06 AM) question to the group: What a DNC? (not democratic national comittee thank you.) and a "rape kit"? those are two terms I've heard used but don't know what they mean. A rape kit is just that, a rape kit. And done to all victims of sexual assult during their hospital examination collecting tissue swabs, secretion and hair samples, and documenting physical evidence such as cuts, scrapes, tears, bruises, etc. It's not DNC, it's D and C (Dilatation ("D") is a widening of the cervix to allow instruments into the uterus. Curettage ("C") is the scraping of the contents of the uterus). It's can be done for several different medical reasons.

QUOTE(J-MAN @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 09:26 AM) I suggest you get off the Eisenhower at Western - take it to 35th and ride 35th! Even better get off on Cicero to 31st and go to Home Run Inn for Pizza before the game. No way in hell I would get off at Cicero. That and Harlem are worse then the Ryan will ever be from 3:30 to 7 pm. Last year it wasn't too bad. Took maybe 15 minutes to get from the Ike/Ryan merge to the park in really backed up traffic. The half hour later start will probably make it about the same with the lane closures. I'm really not that concerned about it.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 09:30 AM) f***. This means Zambrano is wanting a long term deal with the Cubs. Not good news. Better with them versus an AL team we'd have to face several times a year. I absolutely hate seeing him on the mound against us. He's a nut.. but an effecitive one.

QUOTE(Soxfest @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 12:45 AM) They always do something by the Sox Park on the Dan Ryan EVERY dam year, how many more years of this crap. Right now they are re-doing the exits, which are almost done near Comiskey, and looking good to improve the flow while this takes place. Those coming IN the city for a game should be the same as it's been the past years. The problem will be the morning commute in and the afternoon out. It's going to suck more for us coming down the Ike to the Ryan to get to the park I bet...

QUOTE(mmmmmbeeer @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 02:07 AM) I'm sorry if I offended some folks like Steff, or come off as a cold-hearted dick, that's just the way I feel. Who knows, my reaction could be completely different if I was forced into that situation. You didn't offend me at all. It's a very personal thing that was asked here, and you gave your opinion. I just offered you some additional thoughts to ponder with that opinion. I don't agree with it, but I respect it.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 17, 2006 -> 05:58 PM) Sounds like everyone who is in already is fine right? Now you know coming in that you don't have post season tickets if you buy a plan, so it is out there in the open. Sounds like the Sox are making sure to avoid the PR disaster of having people unknowingly not end up with tickets. Oh yea.. everyone who's in already is good. I know a few folks who are pondering full seasons and they want them bad. Not just for the post season.. but that would suck not to even have the option anymore. And to answer your question Bill, from what I heard 2 weeks ago they are just over 20K sold for every game.

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jan 17, 2006 -> 10:53 AM) But if a husband stays, and can't get over the hump of the child being born 1) because of rape and 2) not his biological child, can you honestly say that a 2-person, possibly loveless, maybe resentful relationship is better than a single parent? Staying together because of the kids, biological or not, isn't always the best answer either. I don't have an answer for this question. All I know is that trying is better then not trying. Quitting on someone you are supposed to love and cherish through good times and bad till death do you part is not something I would do. To add.. if a man deems his relationship with his wife loveless and resentful after she's become pregnant in this manner... then he isn't much of a husband, and questionable as a man, and she'd likely be better off without him.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jan 17, 2006 -> 10:43 AM) I remember something similar on one of those wild TLC or Discovery programs which highlight humany misery. May have been Spike TV, I don't recall. But anyways, it was caught on film. A mechanic of a fighter jet was caught on night vision walking past a turbine engine, where he was literally sucked into it. He miraculously survived. It looked surreal on tape; something you'd never expect to witness. Too bad this guy wasn't so lucky. I saw that also. Here it is. http://www.bofunk.com/video/776/sucked_into_jet_engine.html

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/01/17/...in1215236.shtml WASHINGTON, Jan. 17, 2006 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (CBS/AP) Fast Facts Oregon's law covers only extremely sick people, those with incurable diseases whom at least two doctors agree have six months or less to live and are of sound mind. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (CBS/AP) The Supreme Court, with Chief Justice John Roberts dissenting, upheld Oregon's one-of-a-kind physician-assisted suicide law Tuesday, rejecting a Bush administration attempt to punish doctors who help terminally ill patients die. Justices, on a 6-3 vote, said the 1997 Oregon law used to end the lives of more than 200 seriously ill people trumped federal authority to regulate doctors. That means the administration improperly tried to use a federal drug law to prosecute Oregon doctors who prescribe overdoses. Then-Attorney General John Ashcroft vowed to do that in 2001, saying that doctor-assisted suicide is not a "legitimate medical purpose." CBS News legal analyst Andrew Cohen calls the ruling a "significant defeat for the Bush Administration, which had fought hard to convince the Court that the federal laws governing doctors should have trumped Oregon's suicide law." The case, the first major one to come before the new chief justice, was heard by justices touched personally by illness. Three justices — Sandra Day O'Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and John Paul Stevens — have had cancer, and a fourth — Stephen Breyer — has a spouse who counsels young cancer patients who are dying. Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing for the majority, said the federal government does, indeed, have the authority to go after drug dealers and pass rules for health and safety. But Oregon's law covers only extremely sick people, those with incurable diseases, whom at least two doctors agree have six months or less to live and are of sound mind. Tuesday's decision is a reprimand of sorts for Ashcroft. Kennedy said the "authority claimed by the attorney general is both beyond his expertise and incongruous with the statutory purposes and design." "The authority desired by the government is inconsistent with the design of the statute in other fundamental respects. The attorney general does not have the sole delegated authority under the (law)," Kennedy wrote for himself, retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Justices John Paul Stevens, David Souter, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Stephen Breyer. Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia dissented. Scalia, writing the dissent, said that federal officials have the power to regulate the doling out of medicine. "If the term 'legitimate medical purpose' has any meaning, it surely excludes the prescription of drugs to produce death," he wrote. The ruling backed a decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which said Ashcroft's "unilateral attempt to regulate general medical practices historically entrusted to state lawmakers interferes with the democratic debate about physician-assisted suicide." Ashcroft had brought the case to the Supreme Court on the day his resignation was announced by the White House in 2004. The Justice Department has continued the case under the leadership of his successor, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Scalia said the court's ruling "is perhaps driven by a feeling that the subject of assisted suicide is none of the federal government's business. It is easy to sympathize with that position." Thomas wrote his own dissent as well, to complain that the court's reasoning was puzzling. Roberts did not write separately. Justices have dealt with end-of-life cases before. In 1990, the Supreme Court ruled that terminally ill people may refuse treatment that would otherwise keep them alive. Then, justices in 1997 unanimously ruled that people have no constitutional right to die, upholding state bans on physician-assisted suicide. That opinion, by then-Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, said individual states could decide to allow the practice. Roberts strongly hinted in October when the case was argued that he would back the administration. O'Connor had seemed ready to support Oregon's law, but her vote would not have counted if the ruling was handed down after she left the court. "This ruling will encourage other people in other states who may have been contemplating similar assisted-suicide laws to go ahead and get them on the books — and as long as those other laws are similar to the Oregon law they ought to pass the constitutional test," Cohen says. "And I wouldn't be surprised if these efforts begin immediately."

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jan 17, 2006 -> 09:26 AM) Since we are relatively new to the World Series experience, I have been wanting to ask a question about the trophy. Is it common for it to travel the way it has been(sort of like the Stanley Cup, wherever, whenever) when other teams have it? I just dont remember other teams taking it different places like the Sox have, but that could be because I wasnt paying attention and because it was in another city. Anyone know? Boston did it last year.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/europe/01/17...rrot/index.html Tuesday, January 17, 2006; Posted: 7:46 a.m. EST (12:46 GMT) LONDON, England -- A computer programmer found out his girlfriend was having an affair when his pet parrot kept repeating her lover's name, British media reported Tuesday. The African grey parrot kept squawking "I love you, Gary" as his owner, Chris Taylor, sat with girlfriend Suzy Collins on the sofa of their shared flat in Leeds, northern England. But when Taylor saw Collins's embarrassed reaction, he realized she had been having an affair -- meeting her lover in the flat whilst Ziggy looked on, the UK's Press Association reported. Ziggy even mimicked Collins's voice each time she answered her telephone, calling out "Hiya Gary," according to newspaper reports. Call-center worker Collins, 25, admitted the four-month affair with a colleague called Gary to her boyfriend and left the flat she had shared with Taylor, 30, for a year. Taylor said he had also been forced to part with Ziggy after the bird continued to call out Gary's name and refused to stop squawking the phrases in his ex-girlfriend's voice, media reports said. "I wasn't sorry to see the back of Suzy after what she did, but it really broke my heart to let Ziggy go," he said. "I love him to bits and I really miss having him around, but it was torture hearing him repeat that name over and over again. "I still can't believe he's gone. I know I'll get over Suzy, but I don't think I'll ever get over Ziggy." Taylor acquired Ziggy as a chick eight years ago and named him after the David Bowie character Ziggy Stardust. The bird has now found a new home through the offices of a local parrot dealer. Collins, who admitted the affair, said: "I'm not proud of what I did but I'm sure Chris would be the first to admit we were having problems." She added to The Guardian newspaper: "I am surprised to hear he got rid of that bird. "He spent more time talking to it than he did to me."

http://www.kfoxtv.com/news/6157369/detail.html January 16, 2006 -- Federal investigators are in El Paso figuring out how an airplane mechanic could have been sucked into a jet engine during a maintenance check at El Paso International Airport. The name of the victim and official details of his death have not yet been released. Continental Flight 1515 heading to Houston was supposed to take off at about 9 a.m. Monday. "They didn't announce anything. We heard them say to call 9-11 and to close our windows," said Patsy Iturralde a passenger on Flight 1515. Another passenger, Carlos Saucedo, said he noticed a mechanic working beneath one of the engines of the plane as he boarded. "Suddenly the plane jump slightly and that's when they turned off the engines. One of the flight attendants told us to close the windows," said Saucedo. Saucedo also said he heard a mechanic was sucked into the engine as he tried to reach for his baseball cap. But Continental Airlines officials could only confirm the mechanic, who was a contracted employee, was involved in a deadly incident. A Continental representative flew from Houston to read a letter from the airline CEO. Martin De Leon, the manager of public relations for the Houston-based airline, read: "My fellow co-workers and I extend my sympathies to the family and friends of the mechanic involved in this tragic event. Continental is coordinating assistance with passengers who need help dealing with this tragedy." Meanwhile, some passengers had to wait hours to board another flight. "I do want to get on my way, but I don't feel inconvenienced. It's a sad situation I feel sad for his family whoever he was," said Iturralde. Pat Abeln, the airport's aviation director, said the incident was tough on some airport staff. He said help is being offered to those employees exposed to the incident. Abeln said, in his memory, El Paso International has not had an incident of this nature. He said the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate what happened and it will make recommendations if it's determined changes should be made. for his family.

By the way mmmbeer... by leaving the household, not supporting your spouse, and forcing her to raise a child alone you are adding to the possibility of that child becomming a violent person later in life. Studies show that children raised in single parent households have a much greater chance of violently offending. I know it's your personal decision, and I don't judge you. But maybe with more facts you might be able to better make a decision... and possibly make the life of a child a wonderful one. Again.. hopefully you never have to ponder these things.

QUOTE(mmmmmbeeer @ Jan 17, 2006 -> 07:34 AM) raped by her husband? you lost me there. my biggest objection would be that "criminal gene". with that in mind, it's VERY different from adoption. Adoption you get to choose your child after careful research. A baby borne of rape you not only have no chance to research and choose a child, but you also know from conception on that that child's father was genetically prone to violent behavior. THAT is not something I'd want to get involved in. Like I said, it may sound cold hearted but i have my values and my own life. If my wife made what I deemed as a ridiculously poor decision that I just couldn't live with, I'd have to leave. Raped by her husband... crystal clear. "Criminal gene"... What the hell is that..? And, since it's apparent you don't know much about adoption, there are no guarantees that an adopted child is free from issues. Violence is not a genetic defect. It's a learned behavior.
