  5. :headshake http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9915265/ Montana thief's ploy leads to his death by smoke inhalation Updated: 5:09 p.m. ET Nov. 3, 2005 BILLINGS, Mont. - Montana police say an attempt by a burglar to cover his tracks ended in his death. Police in Billings say a man who was found dead in a house last week had died of smoke inhalation, apparently after setting a pair of fires to conceal his crime. Authorities say he had coins belonging to the homeowner in his pockets when emergency crews pulled his body from the burning house. Police also found two bags of household items in the alley, suggesting he had stashed some of the stolen goods before returning to light the fires.

    Chavez...foe

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9895504/ Chavez may hand U.S. F-16 jets to Cuba, China Venezuelan leader snipes at Washington, cozies up to communist nations Updated: 8:48 a.m. ET Nov. 2, 2005 CARACAS, Venezuela - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Tuesday said his government may give its U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets to Cuba or China and replace them with Chinese or Russian aircraft after accusing Washington of blocking purchases of U.S. military parts. Any exchange of military hardware to those countries would break an agreement with the U.S. government on the transfer of technology without Washington's permission and further strain fraying ties between Venezuela and the United States. A fierce critic of the U.S. administration, Chavez has rattled Washington by strengthening ties with anti-U.S. states like Cuba and promoting his self-described socialist revolution as a counterweight to U.S. regional influence. "If they don't comply with the contract ... we can do whatever we want with these aircraft, whatever the hell we want. Maybe we'll give 10 planes to Cuba or to China so they can study the technology," Chavez said. "We don't need any U.S. imperialism." A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Caracas had no comment on Chavez's remarks. Israeli media reported last month that Washington had blocked a sale of technology to Venezuela to upgrade its F-16 fighters, which are made by Lockheed Martin Corp. and powered by engines made by General Electric Co. or Pratt and Whitney, a unit of United Technologies Corp. U.S. officials have not confirmed the reports. Venezuela, the world's No. 5 oil exporter and a key supplier to the U.S. market, was a traditional military ally to the United States. But relations deteriorated steadily after Chavez was elected in 1998. Chavez fosters new friendships Chavez, a former army officer, made his statement during a ceremony to sign a contract with China to build a Venezuelan communications satellite and train Venezuelan specialists in China to manage the technology. Washington sold Venezuela 24 F-16 fighter aircraft in the 1980s when Caracas was seen as an ally against communist Cuba. It was unclear how many of the jets are operational now. In constant tit-for-tat sniping, Chavez often accuses Washington of planning his assassination, while U.S. officials counter he has become a regional menace by using his oil revenues to finance anti-democratic groups in South America. Venezuela still sells most of its crude oil to the U.S. market, but Chavez has moved to diversify economic partners by strengthening ties with countries like Russia, China, Iran and his South American neighbors. In a sign of waning relations, Chavez last year downgraded military relations with the United States by asking Washington to close down liaison offices at Venezuelan military bases. Venezuela recently announced the purchase of automatic rifles and attack helicopters from Russia, naval vessels from Spain and military aircraft from Brazil in an effort to revamp its armed forces.
  7. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationw...nationworld-hed Pompeii's ruins rise to tell tale of horror Field exhibit gives tragedy a human face By William Mullen Tribune staff reporter Published October 18, 2005 About 1 a.m. on Aug. 24 in A.D. 79, tremors radiating from Mt. Vesuvius' cone-shaped slopes began rattling the walls and rousing the occupants of houses, inns, barracks and brothels in little farm and fishing towns and cities along southern Italy's Bay of Naples. In the dark, a column of smoke and ash began to rise from the volcano, eventually reaching 20 miles into the atmosphere and blocking out the sun as the day went on. Residents of the city of Pompeii and the nearby towns of Heraculaneum, Oplontis, Boscoreale and Terzigno sought routes of escape by road or by sea. The remains of a few of the thousands of people who did not make it go on display Saturday at the Field Museum in a major traveling exhibit, "Pompeii: Stories from an Eruption." The exhibit includes casts of the dead whose contortions capture their agony and horror as they were crushed by volcanic ash and debris almost 2,000 years ago. The exhibit, mounted in Italy, includes more than 450 artifacts excavated from communities that in two days were buried and nearly obliterated from memory. It is the first major Pompeii show to come through Chicago since an exhibit of 550 artifacts, heavily concentrated on artworks, appeared at the Art Institute in 1978. Rediscovered in the early 18th Century, the ruins are so well preserved that the homes, shops, theaters and temples stayed almost perfectly intact, providing an intimate picture of life, art and culture in Roman times. "We try to stick to the notion that these are human stories that we are telling in the exhibit," said Francesca Madden, the project manager who directed the installation of exhibit artifacts last week. "It emphasizes the human tragedy. Some people died alone, others trying to protect loved ones." "In this house, seven men died," she said, stopping at a display of a modest home that once stood in the town of Oplontis on Pompeii's outskirts. "These were workmen, so they had very few personal effects with them of any value except for their keys." Whether they had been at the house to work or had ducked inside seeking refuge from the eruption is unclear. "Having their keys with them has a certain poignancy for me," said Madden, "as it suggests their identification with their homes and their expectations that day of having safely locked their doors so that they could return and find everything intact." Wealthy residents also perished, in some cases still clutching fortunes they carried as they tried to flee. Among the riches displayed in the exhibit are bags of gold and silver coins, perfectly preserved jewelry and small, valued objets d'art. Using sections of excavated walls from buried buildings, the exhibit depicts everyday life in Roman society. The destruction was so swift that frescoes and mosaics depicting local scenes and mythical Roman gods and goddesses often retain their brilliant colors. More at link above.
  8. Cool discovery. WARSAW, Poland - Polish archeologists believe they have located the grave of 16th-century astronomer and solar-system proponent Nicolaus Copernicus in a Polish church, one of the scientists announced Thursday. Copernicus, who died in 1543 at 70 after challenging the ancient belief that the sun revolved around the earth, was buried at the Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Frombork, 180 miles north of the capital, Warsaw. Jerzy Gassowski, head of an archaeology and anthropology institute in Pultusk, central Poland, said his four-member team found what appears to be the skull of the Polish astronomer and clergyman in August, after a one-year search of tombs under the church floor. "We can be almost 100 percent sure this is Copernicus," Gassowski told The Associated Press by phone after making the announcement during a meeting of scientists. Gassowski said police forensic experts used the skull to reconstruct a face that closely resembled the features — including a broken nose and scar above the left eye — on a Copernicus self-portrait. The experts also determined the skull belonged to a man who died at about age 70. The grave was in bad condition and not all remains were found, Gassowski said, adding that his team will try to find relatives of Copernicus to do more accurate DNA identification.

QUOTE(ChWRoCk2 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 07:12 PM) it doesnt matter either way the tampa bay devil rays will still take last in their division, they still need to add maybe two allstar starting pitchers, an infielder that is good, and perhaps a bullpen Uh yea... I'm pretty sure that's why they brought Hunsicker on board.. because the last regime sucked and he has the experience to turn it around logically.

  16. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 04:31 PM) Yeah that article is bogus..... It could be true but at the same time it can be greatly over-exagerated..... for all we know clee was just doing a little joking around... You really think Ozzie would let Clee make fun of Marte's upbringing... no ozzie would of slapped the s*** out of Clee if that happened. Remember the article about Ozzie making a racist or some comment earlier.... i bet it was something like that.... unless you actually know someone in the clubhouse that can verify that article is true.... its utter bs. Yea. It's true. In '04 Lee used to talk s*** to Marte between innings when he went down for smoke breaks in between innings. It was not a very well kept secret.

  19. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 04:45 PM) I think KW handing over the World Championship trophy to Frank at the rally was as sentimental as the White Sox are going to get with him. I think that was KW paying homage to him for his service. I doubt he is back with the Sox, if he is even able to come back at all. Ding, ding, ding, ding....
