http://www.click2houston.com/news/4166328/detail.html Parents Charged In 'Worst Case Of Abuse Ever Seen' Parents Could Face Capital Murder Charge If 6-Month-Old Daughter Dies POSTED: 12:47 pm CST February 4, 2005 UPDATED: 4:39 pm CST February 4, 2005 HOUSTON -- In what Houston police call "the worst case of abuse ever seen," a young mother and father were charged with the alleged sexual abuse of their 6-month-old daughter, Local 2 reported Friday. Police filed a serious bodily injury to a child charge against the baby's parents, Ivan Castaneda, 21, and Donna Marie Norman, 19. However, if the child dies, the charges could be upgraded to capital murder. Castaneda and Norman were taken in for questioning Wednesday after Texas Children's Hospital workers notified police that their daughter showed signs of abuse and sexual assault. Investigators said the infant remains in critical condition at the hospital with multiple internal and external injuries throughout her body. "This is the worst case of abuse that I've personally seen," Houston Police Department Sgt. Randy Upton said. "She had some skull fractures, brain contusions, hemorrhaging, liver injuries, lung and kidney problems, signs of sexual abuse, as well as a severe laceration across her tongue." Doctors found more injuries upon closer examination. "In addition to all the internal injuries she had, she also had two broken legs and a broken arm and a broken vertebrae," said Estella Olquin, with Child Protective Services. The couple, who lives in the 1000 block of Gargan in north Houston, originally took their daughter to Doctor's Hospital Parkway and told medical workers the child was experiencing congestion problems. Hospital officials transferred the infant to Texas Children's Hospital, where the girl was placed in the intensive care unit barely alive. Police said the baby was breathing on her own Friday but is reportedly experiencing internal bleeding. Authorities are now investigating injuries discovered in the couple's older child, a 15-month-old daughter. "The second child had an injury that was healing, a fractured skull, as well as some fractured ribs," Upton said. Police said the couple's oldest daughter has been placed in a foster home. Friday afternoon during a placement hearing, a judge ruled that both the baby and her sister would remain in the custody of Child Protective Services pending further investigation. The judge ordered that family members have no contact with the children. "We're going to want to know how is it that these family members that are parents around these children didn't know that they were so hurt," Olquin said. "I'm just in awe. I love them girls," said Johnny Norman, Donna Norman's father. "I love my daughter to death. I care for Ivan and Donna both, man, but this is really unacceptable." Castaneda and Norman were placed behind bars Friday without bond. If convicted of injury to a child, each faces up to 99 years in prison. Castaneda was previously charged with injury to a child in connection with alleged abuse against the 15-month-old daughter; however, the case was dismissed in August 2004. The mother has no criminal history. Both girls were returned to Castaneda and Norman in October after the charges were dropped. They lived with Norman's parents during the investigation.

Apparently Vanilla Ice's devil found a new target.. http://www.wnbc.com/entertainment/4171073/detail.html R&B Singer Houston Gouges Own Eye Out POSTED: 9:37 am EST February 7, 2005 NEW YORK -- R&B singer Houston is recovering at his Los Angeles home following an eye-gouging incident in London. Houston's publicist has released a statement denying reports that the singer tried to take his own life by jumping from a London hotel window, last week. In the statement, the singer's bodyguard said he found Houston in the hotel room, lying on his bed with a towel over his face. Bodyguard Marco Powell said he removed the towel and found Houston's eye hanging out. Powell said Houston claimed he had to "get the devil off his back" and the only way he could do that was by killing the devil. Houston was in "the midst of a spiritual battle against the evil that runs rampant in the entertainment industry," the statement also said. The singer, whose real name is Houston Summers, was briefly hospitalized. The condition of his eye isn't known. Houston, who had the 2004 hit "I Like That," has released a statement saying he still loves his fans. He asks fans to pray for him.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 8, 2005 -> 02:25 PM) Does Maggs have a specialized form of edema? I thought this was temporary and could be cured? From the Intelihealth site Of course most people are not professional athletes. I haven't seen any doctors reports.. but from all that I've heard it's caused serious damage to the knee. From what I have read about it.. taking it easy is one "treatment".. obviously Maggs doesn't have that luxury if he wants to stay employed.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 8, 2005 -> 01:17 PM) Two entirely different players with two entirely different conditions. It would not have cost the Sox 4M to insure a 12M contract for Maggs. It would have cost 2-3M. Albert had a history of re-occuring problems at the time Bal helped the Sox got out of Albert's contract. That history included dl time. Maggs does not have a history of re-occuring problems. His injuries would be classified as accident/collision related. If his medical evalution indicated the bone edema condition was gone he would be reasonably insurable. Maggs was never considered an injury prone player. As of this point.. Maggs is not 100% at the time Albert signed with Baltimore he was. And.. had spent less time onthe DL than Maggs has (including last year). Re-occuring...? Isn't Maggs knee problem re-occuring...? And according to an acquaintance who does legal work in the sports world it would have cost 50% of the contract to insure Maggs and that is based on risk factors. At this time he has not been able to perform any "baseball actions" That puts him in the highest risk catagory. The more he can do at the time the contract is signed the lower the % number. So it would have cost (did cost is what she thinks) nearly 18 million to signed him to 1 year guaranteed $$. By the way.. edema doesn't go away.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 8, 2005 -> 12:22 PM) We are talking a 12M contract with respect to Sox. I factored in 2-3M which is between 20-25%. Maggs injury falls in a gray area category. He's been operated on & given a clean bill of health with respect to the tears. As for the bone edema that's a condition that is determined by a medical evaluation. Either it still exists or it doesn't. If it doesn't that can't be used to rule out insurance. As for Det there is no reason for them to insure any portion of the contract beyond the 1st yr. The contract is voidable at any time after the first year if Maggs can't play. So Det is in the same boat as far as insuring the first 12M goes. Albert signed for less than that with Baltimore and he was still able to perform and the cost to insure it was $4 million PER year, and that was SEVEN years ago. The Sox would have had to tie up more than $16 million for ONE year...? That's just plain stupid.
-
QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ Feb 8, 2005 -> 12:24 PM) yea, i guess we need to all stop talking about maggs Talk about him all you want. Just don't see the point in multiple threads all saying the same thing.
-
Sweet Jesus.. there's already 4 threads about this... Why not just add your comments in one of those..?
-
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 8, 2005 -> 12:00 PM) The Sox would not have to risk 12M. On a contract that small they could easily take out insurance against it. The insurance probably drives the cost up to 14-15M but if Maggs can't play than the Sox only lose about 1/3rd of that. I'm sure Det has done just that for the first yr. No way insurance would have "only" driven up the cost a few million. Albert's insured contract with Baltimore drove up the cost $4 million PER year and he was still able to function at the time of his exam. I have doubts that insurance would touch Maggs at this point. And if they did.. it would cost Detroit a lot of cash. I would guess nearly the value of the contract itself.

QUOTE(DonkeyKongerko @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 06:11 PM) How was AVP great? As a fan of the first 2 and sometimes the third movie, I can't see how anyone could like AVP. Please explain this to me. If you're talking to me.. I already posted why I liked it.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 05:39 PM) Beastly said he "did a lot for us" and I'm stating that we never got anywhere with Ordonez. We've never gotten anywhere with Buehrle or Frank either, but at least they are class guys who don't take their cheap shots through the media like Jagglio is doing. He knows damn well that KW didn't bury him, so he should keep his mouth shut. Look at the quotes in the paper, Maggs has run his mouth while KW has handled this situation with class like a professional. 2 things.. 1. Neither Frank or Mark have had a reason to do something like this yet so I don't know if it's fair to compare.. and 2. Finally Kenny learned to keep the trap closed. Took him long enough.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 05:36 PM) We talking about Buerhle, Frank, or Maggs? Lord Tex... is that cream butter yet...?? Of course none of them did squat to get us anywhere up to this point. There had to be a casualty in the mix.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 04:52 PM) Well...Plainfield to Chicago isn't that far. I know.. but the ones I mail the previous Saturday.. it took until Tuesday for someone in Lemont to get theirs. And that's much closer to P'field than Chicago is. Smartass..

I liked Vanilla Sky, but mainly because of the premise and not the acting. Bagger Vance was amazing - I hated Ali. I had to fight to stay awake during that one also. And folks.. "The Forgotten" ..... it should be forgotten. That is one crappy movie.
