I bet I know what this: Was. Very classy. He's going to be shipped out soon, if not as part of a larger deal, then in exchange for whatever they can get for him. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 11:41 AM) A significant part of that stat is that Juan Uribe was 3rd on the team in plate appearances. The guys who might qualify as more patient hitters often wound up playing only small parts of the season because either they got hurt or they were called up midseason. NAME G AB BB Paul Konerko 151 549 78 Juan Uribe 150 513 34 Jermaine Dye 138 508 45 A.J. Pierzynski 136 472 25 Jim Thome 130 432 95 Josh Fields 100 373 35 Jerry Owens 93 356 27 Tadahito Iguchi (45 Phi) 90 327 44 Darin Erstad 87 310 28 Rob Mackowiak (28 SD) 85 237 23 Scott Podsednik 62 214 13 Andy Gonzalez 67 189 25 Danny Richar 56 187 16 Alex Cintron 68 185 9 Joe Crede 47 167 10 Luis Terrero 61 117 12 Toby Hall 38 116 3 Pablo Ozuna 27 78 3 Ryan Sweeney 15 45 4 Owens was right behind Uribe in 1/2 a season. Iguchi was beyond Uribe in 1/2 a season. Hell, Erstad almost caught Uribe in 1/2 a season. We had 4 guys on the team who played 130 or more games, the other 5 starting positions got divided up, so no one had a chance to get that high in walks because they only got 250-300 at bats. Well, yes and no. The Sox drew 532 walks last season, which is right around the middle of baseball and of the AL. But... a fifth of those walks were 1 player: Jim Thome. -

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 11:33 AM) Are you kidding me? NO ONE has brought up the fact that Uribe was FIFTH on the team in WALKS last year with 34!!!!!!! That's just plain ridiculous...and if it doesn't change, the Sox aren't goin' anywhere. I'm flabbergasted and appalled by that stat. Glad you pointed that out. That really is pathetic. -
QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 11:30 AM) I have become notorious for unplugging things when not in use. Notorious? Do you go around to people's houses and unplug things? Sounds like a new comic book hero. The Unplugger!

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 11:20 AM) If he won't even state a decision, what does that say about his thought process? That he is the right man for the job. I tend to agree with Tex, that stating opinion on this specific thing misses the larger point. -

QUOTE(Brian @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 11:13 AM) Any word on if Toby Hall had or will have his surgery this offseason? Good question. I was wondering that too. Web search turns up no news about it. I was hoping they'd shut him down sometime in September and have him go get it done. -

QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 10:53 AM) I just realized we've been living with this for over twenty years. Many people here have known AIDS all their lives. 20? More like 40. -
QUOTE(rockren @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 08:36 AM) Nope. It's how arrogant KW always is. Dating way back to the Mike Sirotka trade and how he handled that in the media after it happened. The way he handled Frank said NOTHING and KW threw a crying tirade. KW could've said something to the effect that yeah ARod is a great player, but he takes the route and says "Oh it didn't even take me a second to think about it." KW is a good GM and has forgotten more about baseball than I know. However, personality wise...the guy is a piss-ant. So it hasn't occurred to you that maybe he says these things for a reason? That they are orchestrated statements with a purpose?

Update in the Trib. Basically, since the Governor isn't willing to negotiate, Madigan and Cross (Dem and Rep house leaders) have decided instead to negotiate with each other to compromise on legislation for transit funding. Madigan is now conceding that allowing more casinos may be the only way to make that work, despite his previous statements against supporting reliance on gambling funds. From the Republican side, the senate minority leader is saying now that a tax increase can't be the ONLY solution, as opposed to saying it can't be ANY of the solution. So it seems the legislature is approaching compromise. If the 2 chambers can craft a bill that gets bipartisan support in the legislature to a two-thirds tune, then G-Rod will be rendered irrelevant, and the bill will pass without him.

Balta, you wouldn't want Carl Crawford? Not that he can be had for MacD and Aardsma like MG is suggesting ridiculously, but, I think he'd look awfully good on the team. Also, the article saying the system doesn't have an SS with MLB potential ahead of Silverio is inaccurate. There isn't one who'd be ready any time this year or next, but, there are a couple guys who will be in High A and Low A that look like they might turn out to be something. -
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 06:25 AM) In this situation, I think Kenny's big mouth is a good thing. Its one less GM that Borass can use to try to drive his price up against other people. If more GMs did this, it would make it much harder for this guy to get his big money. Exactly. Don't think for a second that this was some off the cuff comment. He knew exactly what he was saying. And even if the Sox were thinking about it, they obviously weren't thinking a number that high, so this is exactly the response that makes sense.

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 07:17 PM) yea, this guy He is running for president as a Dem. Granted, he is polling around 0% LOL Yes, I know who Chris Dodd is. I am wondering why you put him in a category with Giuliani and Edwards for slime. Seemed weird to me. I hadn't recalled hearing anything of that nature about him. What have you seen or heard about him along those lines?

Benchings help QB's who have attitude issues, or who need to learn the game because they are too young, or who need to learn from a master on the field. Grossman doesn't have those problems - his problems are an inability to read the field, inability to check down and inability to take care of the football. I can't see how his benching will help any of those things. If you are in it to still make the playoffs, it has to be Griese. If at some point its a truly lost cause, then put in Orton. Rex is done.

QUOTE(klaus kinski @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 06:27 PM) Point is-they gave up NOTHING to strengthen them significantly. WE will trade Garland an established starting pitcher, and get less. Thats the faith I have in Williams Nothing? -

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 03:34 PM) I've worked with a number of people who advance and staff elected officials. Good Congressmen - even in safe districts - work a lot. And are doing a lot in district when they aren't on the floor of Congress. OK, that's certainly a valid point. I don't doubt it.

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 03:26 PM) na, Dodd or Edwards takes that honor. but i'm biased, Giuliani 2008 Dodd?

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 03:47 PM) don't know how it works. Chicago is more segregated than most major cities (from what i've been told), with much of the very poor living the furthest form downtown. I'm just offering a possible reason why the city does not use a distance based fee. I wouldn't say that's true at all. The farthest reaches of the city are in some cases quite wealthy. There is definitely a push-out from downtown lately though. Still, look at the really poor neighborhoods. The west side generally is very poor, west of Ashland or Damen, but parts of that are very close to downtown. Even Austin is a shorter trip than the far north side. The further northern reaches of the CTA are Evanston, Skokie and Wilmette, which are all affluent suburbs. Going northwest is sort of middle income mixed with other. Southwest, is up and down as you head out the Orange line. Red line and green line south, that's poor all the way out. So I think its a mixed bag.

Dan in Real Life Saw it this past weekend, wasn't psyched going in. But I was pleasantly surprised. It was pretty funny, but more so, it was really well written and a pretty darn good family portrait film. It was painful to watch at times, but in a good way, if that makes any sense. I actually recommend this movie. I had wanted to see Into the Wild, but lost the coin toss. I hope to see that this coming weekend.

QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 03:16 PM) I think the pink was a combination of part of the blue and part of the green, but they are now using the north-south tracks right by the united center, tracks that haven't been used in a while. So there's the added upkeep of that new X miles of track plus the additional costs in running the routes. In the grand scheme of things the loss (if there is one) on that section of the track surely didn't put them in the situation they are in now. One thing that could be effecting their bottom line is the two major overhauls of the brown and red lines and their stations - whether that was necessary (for safety) or whether it was a beautification project is up for debate. But yeah, I agree. I'm a chicago resident but I don't think joe blow down in southern illinois should be paying for a system that I use daily and they may use once in their lives, if that. I think we need to set up a zone map so that riders in the far away stations pay more. That wont solve the problem, but it'll help stop the bleeding. I think a zoned fare system is a great idea. I also think that the CTA should look reducing train frequency during off hours, as opposed to just removing it. Add in making that zoned fare structure higher in overall fares, an small increase in gasoline tax, and mandated cuts in the cost of MANAGEMENT, and I think you can get a significant chunk of the way there. Also, something to consider... I cannot find the article now, but the CTA was actually getting less government money per passenger than most transit systems in the country. So while I am sure their management is less than efficient, I don't think that's as big a problem as others indicate. I think the decaying infrastructure should be the biggest cost concern at this point.

Detroit is out of it (A-Rod), for any real purposes now. At this point, the Sox are better candidates, and they are a big long shot anyway.
