I'm not much of a chef, but I do make a mean chili. I am definitely pro-beans, but I tend to use black beans more than typical chili beans. A mix of the two works well, I've found. I also like to add some flakes of baker's dark chocolate (unsweetened), if I have it around. And I tend towards a lot of cumin. Its cool and crisp now in Chicago - I think you've inspired me to cook up the first batch of the season.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 02:21 PM) I dont know why Barry does what he does. If I was Barry my answer would be: So what. I think its hilarious this holier than thou attitude, I feel that everyone cheats. Small ways, big ways, every way in between. Thats life. But I think Barry wants to believe that he broke the record with out cheating, and thats where the whole thing falls apart. People like Belichek, they are happy they cheated, they are glad with the results. Bonds wants to have his cake and eat it too. I have to say it kind of surprises me to hear an attorney take the "everyone else is doing it" route. Kind of lame, ya? 5 cars go through a red light, the guy in the shiniest sports car might be the one most likely to get pulled over, but does that mean he's some kind of victim? And your other argument, that Bonds didn't know what the cream and the clear were, is bogus legally as well. Breaking the law is breaking the law, regardless of whether or not you are aware of the law or that you were breaking it. Ignorance of the law is not a valid defense. Bond has cheated, and done it in a way that happens to be not only against baseball's rules but against the laws of the country. He has furthermore acted like an asshole, more so even than the other assholes around him, which just makes him that much more of a target. He cheated in such a way that officiating crews in the game had no control over. And of course, he broke one of professional sports' most treasured records. Basically, he was the king jerk among jerks. So I don't feel too bad that he happens to be the target of more ire than other cheaters.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 02:06 PM) Has anyone ever been making a turn, but there is oncoming traffic so you have to wait, and you can see the person behind you in your mirror going insane because you don't risk slamming on the gas to make the turn at the absolute split-second chance that could end up with you making a successful turn or getting hit in the side? Yes, and if you make that left on a yellow light, that guy and 2 others will run the red trying to draft through behind you, making everyone else wait for them.

I've grown to really dislike driving, so its hard for me to pick just one pet peeve among the myriad of stupid things people do while driving. Its like everyone's IQ drops 30 points upon turning the ignition (including, nowadays, myself). But if I had to pick just one... blocking an intersection. If you can't make it across, don't enter the intersection. Its the ultimate act of selfishness - I'll just go right here and block the entire flow of traffic from the other direction, because I am more important than any of you. Ugh. I used to like driving.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 01:05 PM) Not sure if it was the denial of getting on the ballot in SC or the writers strike, but Colbert is dropping his Presidential bid http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D8...;show_article=1 I'm glad he did what he did, but am equally glad it didn't really go anywhere serious.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 12:12 PM) Roberts had a .377 OBP last season, stole 50 bases and was caught 7 times. In 2005 he posted a .902 OPS. Yeah I have to say, he's a guy I would love to see acquired if possible. But I don't see it happening. I doubt the O's would even consider moving him, unless they got a blockbuster offer.

Miscellaneous "White Sox" Trade Notes
NorthSideSox72 replied to Kalapse's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
I'd hate to trade away Jenks of Fields. But I think Gio + Danks + a couple of the younger relievers in the system (Hernandez and the like) might do it. But then the Sox would be cleaned out of starting pitching prospects. Who do you then add to the rotation - Charlie Haeger? Jack Egbert? Or do you keep Garland at that point? -
ESPN reporting that before opting out of his contract, A-Rod set a demand that no discussion could even take place with the Yankees unless they put an offer on the table of at least $350 million. That was $150 million more than what was thought to be the Yanks' starting point. $350 million f***ing dollars? Even if its a 10 year deal, $35 million per, as a starting point? So if its $40 million per year or more, that means that for all but 2 teams in baseball (BOS, NYY), A-Rod would be over one third of the team's payroll. For most teams, he'd be more than half of current. For some teams, that's more than their entire payroll. I just can't believe that any baseball player is ever worth a third or half your payroll.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 08:55 AM) What kinds of at bats are productive and not tracked in some stat? I think he was getting at things like moving runners over, working the pitcher, etc. -
QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 08:54 AM) I would not totally dismiss the "rock star" factor. It certainly was a key component for Kennedy, Reagan, and Clinton. Being a cheerleader and making America feel confident and optimistic goes a long way. In fact with Reagan it was probably his single biggest accomplishment. Going back to Nixon we had three duds. Reagan rides in on his stallion and we start kicking some ass. Charisma is certainly not a bad thing. But SS is getting at the fact that its currently far too much of what influences people. This puts the Edwards and Giuliani's at an advantage over the Thompsons and Richardsons of the race who have a bit more substance behind their facades. Heh. Who would have thought that after Mr. Hollywood entered the race, we'd be discussing that its too bad his lack of charisma is hurting him?

QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 08:37 AM) wtf? There has to be more to this story? What do you mean? Have you seen some of those post-Halloween specials on candy? I wouldn't leave either.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 07:54 AM) Its funny because if you get past the quad-rennial "idiot Republician" media slash-job, the positions he has on lots of the major issues, are by far my favorite. His SSI and Illegal Immigration plans are not only both intelligent compromises, they also promise the least disruption to day to day lives for the most people. But its easier to buy the all-too-predictable "idiot" label... I really don't see him being cast as an "idiot". Its more he seems lazy and uninterested, which is different. I like some of his ideas too. But he seems to almost dislike the idea of the job.

Miscellaneous "White Sox" Trade Notes
NorthSideSox72 replied to Kalapse's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
Two different articles put the Phillies as a potential match for trades with the Sox - one mentioning Crede, the other Garland. -
Bukvich is already gone. Bourgeois, Wing and Garrett should be the priorities to be kept, IMO.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 03:51 PM) I dont even know who directed Departed and I loved the movie, and Im pretty hard on movies in general. I think you guys just saw Titanic and refuse to giveLeonardo Dicaparo or however you spell it a chance... he was also great in Blood Diamond. I was OK with DiCaprio - in fact I thought Departed was the first film I liked him in. What I didn't like was that the major motivating plot force, throughout the movie, was just who-kills-who. It was just a dumb movie, I thought. Well-produced and well-acted, just poorly written and directed. Nothing subtle about it - just plain violent. I could watch Rambo and get that.

White Sox Fall/Winter League Discussion Thread

QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 05:12 PM) I like Lucy. Plays very good defensively, and I'd be nice to see him put together a very good offensive year at Charlotte in 08. He probably won't be anything more then a backup, but hopefully he can be able to hit lefties decently so he could make a nice platoon option at least. He needs to start looking decent in AFL ball, and he needs to put up offensive numbers at Charlotte similar to those he did at B-Ham (or better). Something like a .260-.270 avg with a little power, added to his plus defense, and he's ready at that point to take Hall's spot. -

They could have just started Ross Gload in CF in 2006 and we wouldn't have had this problem. -
Under the category of endorsements you may not want... Hillary Clinton has been endorsed by Walter Mondale.

QUOTE(BigEdWalsh @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 12:07 PM) Phoenix won yesterday, 12-5. Good day for Sweeney (.250): 3-5, 2 R, RBI Getz (.279): 1-5, R, 2 RBI Lucy (.179): 2-4, R, RBI Day (1.80): 1 IP, K Hernandez (0.00): 1 IP, 2 K Mochis lost, Bourgeois (.287): 1-4 Seems like the Sox' pitchers are doing pretty darn well down there in the AFL, especially in what are considered hitters' parks. That's a positive. Lucy is 4 for his last 11, after starting 1 for 17. I guess that's an improvement, but we'll see if he can keep it up. -
QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 12:41 PM) What should concern you is that he didn't bother to even put his campaign chairs through a vetting process. He isn't aware when high level straegists, and the guy running his Iowa campaign leaves his campaign. He's just out of touch... and running a horrible campaign. The best proof of this are the state polls in Iowa and New Hampshire. He's in danger of falling into fifth place in Iowa behind Huckabee, and in NH, some polls show him finishing behind Ron Paul. His poll numbers in other states (SC, NJ and FL) have plummeted since he entered the race. So apparently, I'm not the only one who seems to feel this way. He seems to have picked a close staff that just doesn't know how to campaign and how to market him. And I think its taken him from a possible top tier candidate, down to someone who just isn't going to compete.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 01:06 PM) I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one with a "death grip" believing Owens in nothing more than a 4th OF. I never said he wasn't a major leaguer. I said he's not a starter if you are trying to win. And if you go back to my posts, my argument was against the post that claimed Owens>Crisp. Do you think Jerry Owens is better than Coco Crisp? The argument is based on Owens' September. Actually, you are the only one using September as the argument, bringing it up over and over again. And no, Owens is not better than Crisp. Owens might, in time, be as good as Crisp is right now. But even that is iffy. The only reason to even analyze a Crisp v Owens question is the salary involved. If by going with Owens instead of Crisp allows you to be significantly better at SS, maybe LF (if Crede is gone), another SP and/or the bullpen, then I think you need to seriously consider having Owens as your starter.

QUOTE(Soxfest @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 10:44 AM) This thing is gaining traction. Buster Olney comments on the idea of a Joe Crede for Johnny Damon swap this morning: Makes sense in a lot of ways: The Yankees would get the veteran third baseman they need without committing themselves to big dollars, shed Damon's salary, and the White Sox would solve their third base logjam while adding a center fielder for much less than what the free agent center fielders will get (Damon is owed about $26 million over the next two seasons, and presumably, the Yankees would eat some of that to make a deal happen). This is directly cut-and-pasted from the MLBtraderumors.com site. Please do not put articles on this site without linking or crediting the source. Not doing so could cause issues for Soxtalk. We thank everyone in advance for their cooperation.

2007 Post ASB White Sox Catch-All Thread
NorthSideSox72 replied to Chisoxfn's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This seemed interesting. KW was asked if he had made a decision as to what to do about Uribe, and the answer was an emphatic "yes." Since he didn't then announce that his option was being picked up, I'd take this as a strong sign that he's got an SS trade in mind, maybe one being worked on right now. -
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 03:46 PM) There's a few people on this site who have said Crede must be non-tendered. To be fair, non-tendering him, although they don't have to do it just yet would cement Fields position as well. If trade offers for Crede aren't good enough, I think you keep him around to play. Without getting into the extremes of the argument, Crede is not a bad choice for 3B for a year, if he is healthy. I think the only way you non-tender him is if the trade situations work out in such a way that you pick up not one, but two significant upgrades in the outfield. Like say, one of Hunter/Rowand/Crisp/DeJesus/Damon in CF (yes, I know, Crisp and Damon could be questioned as to how significant), AND someone for LF like Jenkins/Damon/???. In that case, move Fields back to 3B, and yes, non-tender Crede.
