  1. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 04:24 PM) I would love to see Chicago get the Olympics, but I doubt it happens. I give it 50-50. Their only real competitor is Rio.
  2. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 03:20 PM) Wonderful. Then why waste your time here? I am sure there is somewhere that all of you ultrasmart fans hang out that the rest of us don't know about. Run along if the people here bother you that much. For the rest of us, it is a discussion board.
  3. QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 03:44 PM) Can I correct the thread title to I want Bonds in a cell? Finally, after 71 posts, someone makes the joke.
  4. QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 04:43 PM) Well I will be heading to Chase in about 30 mins to see the game. So lets hope for a 2-0 lead! Will you be wearing D-Backs gear, I assume? Maybe you can even throw some White Sox item in there too, just for funnies.
  5. QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 04:38 PM) I think people are going to be disappointed then to see where the Sox minor league system is ranked this offseason (and no, that information is not just coming from BA). The Sox were what, 27th according to BA last year or something like that? Similar in other lists too - among the bottom 5 or bottom 10. I don't think they'll suddenly jump to 15th, but I'd bet that they'll be more like 20th, instead of 25th. A small step forward.
  6. QUOTE(That funky motion @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 04:34 PM) I Think I'm going to drop my full season package. Just curious... what is your reason for doing so? The lousy season, finances, or something else?
  7. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 02:40 PM) Surprisingly it basically is. http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/200...tagnant_ne.html That is basically two persons annual median incomes, which would be what a typical American household would have. That is not good. People can't get their net worth above their annual income? Even with the big housing value run-up we've had? Yikes. This nation has gotten really, really bad and saving and investing.
  8. QUOTE(juddling @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 02:36 PM) You mean a business trying to possibly cash in on the "lemming'-mindedness of Cub fans surprises you???? I'm surprised it wasn't tried before Seriously. Since Ronnie is basically unemployed, I am sure he could be had for next to nothing, and that fan base is a perfect target.
  9. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 02:26 PM) That other logo was a thousand times better than the crappy one with the star... They had to get rid of the earlier one because it used the torch symbol. But thing is, they knew that to begin with. Which means they were really showing people, that is what they will eventually use if they win, at which time they are allowed to.
  10. I actually left a management role (Director level, 20+ reports in multiple countries) to do a heavy-travel consulting-type gig (but no staff management). It was the perfect lego peg type role for me, filling in some blanks that I needed in my industry, so that I could have the right background to run a company later. Point of that is, sometimes you shift from one type of equilibrium (balance of pay, hours and career value) to another for a specific goal, for a specific period. And I think that is based a lot on what stage in life you are at. I can do this now not having kids yet, but if that changes in a few years, the travel is going to become a problem. So I'd suspect I won't be in this role for more than a few years. As far as commuting goes, I LOVED being able to do the train/walk thing and not drive. So much cheaper, so much less stressful, plus a little exercise. I've also learned this - Chicago is a great place to start a career. This city always seems to have jobs, and plenty of them, in all kinds of industries, and the cost of living is so much easier than places like NY, Boston, DC, LA, San Fran, etc.
  11. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 01:08 PM) Like high school...I chose to focus on Cs, rather than As You must have had a 4.0 For a second, I was tempted to put a picture of my wife up here, but I can't do it. Instead...
  12. QUOTE(vandy125 @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 01:39 PM) Story showed up on Digg and may be getting too much traffic for the web site. Here is another link without the pretty graphics from the first. Business Week Link Very cool. That is huge, in fact. Go Sandia Labs!!! Question for the local geologist... do you forsee any problems that might be caused by putting air under high pressure down into the earth like that, that far down? Any effect on water tables, or geological stability?
  13. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 12:57 PM) If this is true, that we aren't schmoozing enough -- holy s***, that's embarrassing. We should be able to schmooze. That much should be a no-brainer. Get your head in the game, Mayor Daley! That was the other reason I thought it was funny. Daley's administration being outschmoozed? That won't last long.
  14. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 12:47 PM) I am going to renew my partial plan. The only thing holding me back is how s***ty my postseason tickets are. In '05, not being a season ticket holder, I got every game, third base side, for face value. Now, as a season ticket holder, I can't pull seats that good. So why not just by single game tickets like I did before '06? But, I think I will. Love the Sox and love the Cell. See you f***ers in '08. Buh? How did you get postseason tickets in '05 for face value in a good location without being a season holder? Were you one of the one-in-a-thousand lucky ones the day those few went on sale to the public or something?
  15. This article is a perfect illustration of why the Olympic selection process is such a joke. Ueberroth, the USCO chair, says Chicago is falling behind cities like Rio, Madrid and Tokyo. Not because of the plans or the bids or anything important, mind you... but because Chicago isn't doing enough to win the hearts of the selection committee. Yes, you read right - Ueberroth says Chicago is behind because it isn't schmoozing enough. And he says it right up front! He's basically saying, "it doesn't matter who the best city is, it matters who shows the jury the best time." What a joke.
  16. CNN now reporting that the judge in this case has rejected Senator Craig's bid to withdraw his guilty plea. More info soon. I would suppose he will be resigning now.
  17. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 11:59 AM) LINK Not really a surprise. Toyota is certainly out there in the lead on hybrid tech and more fuel efficient cars (along with Honda), but they do still have their truck market to worry about. Toyota is not greener than the rest because they like trees - its because they have superior R&D, they know that, so they are out on the cutting edge where they can beat their competition. The fact that it makes them "greener" might be a motivation too, but its not reason number 1.
  18. QUOTE(vandy125 @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 12:00 PM) Just ran across this article today. There is a new thought on storing energy from wind farms during low demand times, and it involves using the geology of the land to do it. From the article, it can be used in 83% of the US. Storing Energy Underground I think that it sounds pretty sweet and love that they are doing it right here in Iowa. I get an error when I click that link. I'd really like to see that story, though.
  19. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 11:55 AM) The chance for season ticket holders to see SoxBP is pretty cool. I just hope it's for a bunch of games. yeah, that was my favorite part of the package. I was psyched to see that. It will be nice to have early access to BP, just the season holders in the crowd.
  20. Domenici (R-NM) annouced he will retire and not seek re-election to his Senate seat. That adds yet another worry for the GOP, since New Mexico has gone recently from a reliably red state to a swing or even blue state. Of the 34 seats up for election, 22 are held by Republicans, 4 of which are retiring. Analysts are seeing only one Senate race where the GOP has a reasonable chance to unseat a Dem, versus quite a few the other way around.
  21. QUOTE(Calderon @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 10:09 AM) I might be wrong, but wasn't that a move made out of necessity when Honel crashed and burned and (late in the year) when Russell went to the 'pen? He certainly did have success, both as a starter and a reliever, I guess the crucial point will be whether the Sox think his arm will hold up under a 150 inning burden. You hear great things about him character/makeup-wise, so I hope he stays healthy and succeeds. That may have been the impetus, but then, there were other options too. Hard to say. I am sure you are right, they will be careful with his arm. His innings in his starts were like 3 or 4 innings at the beginning, then they kept adding more and more, until he pitched almost 8 innings at the end. With an offseason to strengthen up, we'll see what he can do.
  22. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 09:52 AM) We are in a bit of a pickle. We want to re-up our 27 game weekend plan, but want to move seats. If we can't, then we aren't coming back. The section is fine, its just that we got seats 1-2, and we get all the vendor traffic RIGHT in front of the plate. Problem is, we aren't going to deposit any money if we don't know for sure where we are sitting, yet they can't figure out how many people are re-uping without deposits. Will see what happens. You might be able to make a payment and get it refunded - maybe. I am not sure what the policy is. Call your rep, they may be able to work something out for you where you can get your deposit back if they can't move your seats. I'm guessing there will be a significant chunk of people not renewing, allowing people like you to move (and people on the waiting list to get in).
  23. QUOTE(Calderon @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 09:30 AM) Wing had a pretty serious shoulder injury and then followed that up with Tommy John in...'04? The organization has been really, really careful with him as a result. He's best used as a long/middle reliever, and had a darn good year this season. None of the five listed above would be bumped to give him a rotation spot in Charlotte, but he might be a good weapon out of the bullpen, more than most because of his versatility. The only place I could see him opening the season in the rotation would be in Birmingham if they have holes. I agree they wouldn't bump any of those. I am saying if one of those 5 isn't there, I think Wing gets in the rotation. I think its telling that they moved Wing to the rotation, and that he flourished there, in 2007.
  24. I'm sort of curious how many of the folks here are season ticket holders, and of those, how many are renewing. I'd also be curious about where people are located. For those renewing, first payment is due 11/2. We just got our package in the mail to renew, with a few promotional items in it, and some incentives to renew (AJ bobblehead, entry into drawings for Spring Training and World Series trips). We have a 4 seat, 27 game weekday plan, been in the same location a few years now. Definitely renewing. We have an amazing location, so I don't think we are ever giving it up. We ask every year to upgrade to full seasons in the same location, but the weekend-plan people in our seats seem to like their seats too, unfortunately.
