QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 09:00 AM) regional Well good. But if there isn't an inflationary adjustment, then we are just looking at another example of Congress being stupid, because it would have to be revisited again in a few years anyway.

I thought it was kind of funny last night during pre-game, they pointed out that the last time the Cubs won a world series, Arizona was not yet a state. Along those lines, here are a few other somewhat obscure but very telling things that have happened since the last time the Cubs were World Champions... --4 states have been added to the union - New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii --The United States has been invaded (Aluetian Islands by Japan, 1944) --The contiguous United States were invaded (Mexican General Pancho Villa and a renegade band of the Mexican Army sacked Columbus, New Mexico in 1916) --There were still Indian wars going on in the U.S. (last significant battle - 1917, 10th Cav against Yaqui near Nogales, AZ)

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 08:32 AM) Take a look at my post about the net worth of each of the Presidential candidates and tell me honestly how this does not exsist today. We haven't had a middle class President in our lifetime for sure. To be honest, I couldn't tell you the last time in our history that has happened. We have a ruling class now. There are a couple or three of those guys with net worths that are semi-pedestrian for professionals of their age. But most of them are indeed rich, very rich, filthy rich or disgustingly rich.

QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 12:30 AM) And Piniella was absolutely awful tonight. And as people have said, the Chicago media won't rip him at all. Granted we don't know if he was cramping up but if he was fine taking him out in a tie game with only 85 pitches is dumb. Hangar, is that you? Just kidding. Actually, look at the Trib website. The top headline is "Did move cost Cubs game?", and look at the columnists (Downey, Morrisey) - they are definitely not happy about it.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 08:09 AM) I thought that was already done. Maybe that was taken out of the final bill?? Which part? Regional adjustments, or inflationary adjustments?

I was thinking, I have a feeling that not all these 5 guys: Will be in the system in 2008. Gio might be on the big team, others might be traded. I think the person not being mentioned here who will probably be in that rotation, though, is Ryan Wing. He pitched very solidly for B-Ham this year, his peripherals all looked very good, finished the season strong as a starter (had been a reliever to open the season). But if you look at his history, its kind of bizarre. Started very young (19) in the Sox org, seemed to progress really well 2001-2003 up through A+, then all of a sudden in 2004 he is out of baseball?! Then starts 2005 in the Texas system, pitches not great, and moves BACK to the Sox org to finish the season. Then in 2006, he goes back to Rookie ball, but pitches well. Now a really solid season at AA. Anyone know more about this guy's story? Was there a major injury or something? I realize he is 25 now, but, looking at what he has done before, I think he might still turn out to be solid. I mean, as great as Gio and Eggy's numbers were at B-Ham, Wing's numbers were right there too.

I thought he did OK for a first time out, but he definitely needs work. Which should be expected. Frank is no idiot either, and I think he'll improve. Boy did he look bizarre in that suit, though. Like a well-decorated brick wall with Frank's head on top.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 02:10 PM) As modified, that's right, that is what the bill is. The original "floor" at $80K+ was ridiculous, though. As I said, this is about the fight on socialized health care. In this instance, this one is really a hybrid, and the "compromise" bill that was sent to the president was reasonable, IMO. Part of the problem with setting a single, national salary floor is that 80k is very different from place to place. 80k for a family in, say, Ames, Iowa, is most definitely a middle class lifestyle or maybe even better. 80k living in Boston or New York on the other hand, is scraping by. I'd rather see either the states having some say here, or at least some sort of cost of living adjustor on there. Also, like minimum wage, the salary levels should have an automatic annual increase based on some market basket measure, so that this does not need to be revisited.

Jimmy Carter, ex-president, current badass.
NorthSideSox72 replied to Rex Kickass's topic in The Filibuster
The fact that, at age 83, the guy is in a very dangerous place trying to do some good for the world, deserves my respect. Maybe his argument wasn't the smartest move, but do admire Jimmy's attempts to do some positive things in dark places. -
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 07:41 PM) Picking up Uribe's $5M option is not the only way to bring him back. You use the $300K buyout then offer him a 1 year deal worth $1.7M + a s*** load of offensive incentives and a $5M-$6M team option for 2009 (along with a $500K buyout). He gets $2.5M guaranteed in the deal with incentives that can add on another $3M and he gets another contract year to prove he's worthwhile long term investment.. I think as a Plan D (after Furcal, Renteria and a couple other possibilities), that's not a bad idea at all. I don't think another team will pick him up for much more than that anyway.

Braves cut ties with Jones

QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 05:48 PM) Let me clear something up for some people: The White Sox WILL NOT sign Jones or Hunter. Get it ? NOT. Thankfully. Sign Rowand, hopefully. Thank you, Mr. Williams. May we have another? -
QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 06:34 PM) Thanks Randy, as I was wondering the same thing. Gio and Sweeney were supposed to be our two best prospects (if not top 3) coming into the year, and the reviews for them weren't exactly promising. Small moves, fathom. Small moves. The Sox are a little better off than a year or two ago in the minors, mostly at the lower/younger end - so they are making progress. That is possible, you know.

QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) Jeri Thompson.... winner^^^^^^^^^^ Eh, I still think Mrs. Kucinich is better looking.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 04:26 PM) Full article That will undoubtedly help them, but to say that 21/22 mpg is "impressive" is like a bad joke. The average non-hybrid car does better than that.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 03:33 PM) http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/10/03/indiana.crash/index.html Five hours after the cops leave the crash scene, the father of one of the victims finds his son's body wrapped around a tree. Yeah, this has been in the papers for a few weeks now. Cops screwed up - should have checked even if they kid said nothing, and certainly after he said to check. That is reckless abandonment, textbook. Kid lied too of course - said he was sober, said he insisted over and over again. Plenty of idiots involved.

I suppose other things may be in the works, but, I don't see what they see in Gonzalez. I can't imagine why he needs to take up a space on the 40-man roster.

Handy website for tracking poll results for Dems in the primaries, including both national and state polls.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 03:06 PM) Found it on his website. http://www.mikehuckabee.com/index.cfm?Fuse...ease&ID=285 I found the actual poll results. Sure enough, among caucus-goers, he is at 12% in Iowa, right in the thick of it. By the way, handy website right here for Republican polls, both national and state. Nice tracker. I'll put the Dem one in that thread.

Link? I'd like to see the numbers.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 01:42 PM) I wonder if it is easier or harder today for a dark horse to make a run. Money is certainly a bigger issue today, but you can do a lot via the internet, which is cheaper and more direct. Still capturing the imagination of the media is the biggest problem. With a limited number of column inches available, allocating space to the sixth or seventh candidate who is polling in the low single digits, probably doesn't make much sense. Forget about buying enough TV ads. Its harder financially and in some other ways. But I think the fact that campaigning started SO early this time gives the lower tier candidates a better chance - they can do a lot of their spending in a targeted way, whereas the bigger candidates are spending tons of money all the time, and may not be the hot candidate at the right time.

QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 01:37 PM) so i'm struggling to get my landscape company to come out and perform contractually obligated/required maintenance work on my brick paver patio. They keep pushing me off further and further. My next steps are to (1) contact the county sheriff (i live in unincoporated Kane County) to file a Civil complaint (2) contact the BBB to file a complaint and seek assistance (3) contact Unilock (the brick manufacturer) to see if they can assist (4) have a lawyer write an "informative" letter Any other suggestions on what to do? Has anyone else dealt with similar situations? I'm not sure what good calling the sheriff's department will do. You don't have a criminal claim against them, and if you want to file suit, you need to go to the courthouse (Kane County Judicial Center, on Route 38 just west of Randall) and file there. I'd make sure you let the company know you plan to do ALL those things as well as do everything you can do steer business away from them, and give them a specific deadline for doing their work before those consequences take hold. If they hear lawsuit, or other complaints, they may blink. Also, you can write them up on sites like Angie's List, which I have found to be a great tool. I am not aware of what sort of contract you have, but I don't know what good contacting the brick company would do. The BBB thing is good, but find more local agencies too (county, state) that are similar in role.

Where is the Furcal option?

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 01:08 PM) Paul is really sneaking into this thing. The longer people stay distracted with everything else going on, he continues to creep up on people. He seems to have the most passionate following around. I doubt it will be enough though. All though this guy is a New Hampshire surprise away from breaking out. I really enjoy watching darkhorses go on a run. Richardson going from 1-2% to now double digits in key states, for example. Paul is also coming up, but he is going from not even registering on the rader to like 2 or 3% in IA and NH. He needs to start spending that money pretty quick if he wants a chance to make some noise.

I'm surprised that we even got that one. W-S was not exactly loaded with talent. Southern league comes out on 10/8. I'd hope to see both Gio and Eggy on that list. Oneli Perez looks really good this year and last, but he's 24 now, so I doubt they'd consider him. I can't see anyone else having a chance. And I really don't think anyone from Charlotte will make it either.
