  1. I'll wait and see where they both are in a couple years before I decide if it was such a terrible decision. Suzuki did pretty well offensively for a rookie this year, but he's never going to be the defensive player Lucy is now. That said, if Suzuki comes out in 2008 and 2009 and puts up numbers like his AA and AAA numbers at the major league level, then he is probably a better hitter than Lucy will ever be.
  2. QUOTE(danman31 @ Sep 30, 2007 -> 03:44 PM) Miranda still has a lot to prove. I don't think he is super toolsy so he won't make a list like this, plus his .282 average and .349 slugging are far from impressive. As a 20-year-old (I know how you are very focused on the age thing ), who was promoted to Low A after hitting .468 in Great Falls the same year he was drafted. And his numbers started low and then just kept getting better - he hit .154 in June, .270 in July, .286 in August, .390 in his last 10 games and .462 in September. And how many players do you see at that level with a nearly 1.5-to-1 BB/K ratio? He does lack power almost completely, though. His defense, I have no idea other than the stuff Gene mentioned - college awards, but a lot of errors at Kanny. I'd love to see a detailed scouting report on the kid, now that he has been exposed to professional pitching. I'd still bet even money he makes the Top 20. But these lists always have some surprises - so I guess we'll see.
  3. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 30, 2007 -> 01:35 PM) Well you know, since he's really our president (because Bush isn't), he's "owed" the office. Seriously Kap... why? Why post in respone to my post? Have I ever said anything like that?
  4. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 10:04 PM) So much for an exciting last weekend. After tonight, it appears three of the NL spots have been decided. Any loss by the Mets or Phillies (or a win by the Padres) means the Padres clinch. The BHAMs clinched. And the Cubs clinched. Boring. I assume this was supposed to be in green. 3 games until the end of the season and not one team in the NL had clinched - how is that not some really exciting baseball? Who cares if it happened Friday or Saturday?
  5. Every time KW opens his mouth, especially when he says "we're fine with what we have", you have to ask yourself... why would he go out there and say "we're trading half the team"? All that would accomplish is put him in a weaker position of negotiation. I'd be shocked if there weren't multiple big moves this offseason. Looking at the 2007 Opening Day roster, and comparing it to the 2008 one (once its done), I'd bet you will see 7 or 8 new faces.
  6. DLS, Carter and Miranda will be on there, I'd bet. I don't think Shelby will make it, though he is still a prospect worth keeping an eye on.
  7. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Sep 29, 2007 -> 07:07 PM) Hott Fuzz is absolutey awful (and I loved Shaun of the Dead). I had to turn the s*** off halfway into it for being so bad. The best parts were at the end.
  8. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 29, 2007 -> 09:26 PM) So with that, we will now have the Goracle as president. I think I just threw up a little. I'd take Gore over any number of the current frontrunners in either party (Clinton, Edwards, Giuliani, Romney - definitely. Others, maybe).
  9. QUOTE(Chet Lemon @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 06:36 PM) I will take Obama then if that is cool. Done.
  10. Since this has nothing to do with the Sox, putting it in Diamond Club.
  11. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 30, 2007 -> 01:27 AM) So now Josh Fields isn't playing LF this offseason? http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines Color me not happy.
  12. I've been more a defender of KW here than most. But I'll tell you right now, for every logical reason I can see (ability, age, salary, chemistry, history), bringing Myers back makes NO sense. He does zero good in the pen. He is a 39 year old LOOGY who allows lefthanders to hit .288 against him. Year before that? .257. These are not the mark of a good LOOGY - they are the mark of a pitcher losing his stuff. Please. No. This is not even to mention that, believe it or not, the bullpen as it stands now other than Myers has four guys who look pretty darn good for 2008 (Jenks, Logan, Wassermann, Thornton). And with the talent they have, some of those hard-throwing relievers will have figured it out this season and this fall (Aardsma, MacD, Day, O Perez, Vasquez), and if you need just one or two, its OK to take the chance. I'd rather take the 4 solids I mentioned, find one decent setup guy on the market for via trade (who isn't 39 and who actually gets guys out), and throw in one of the fireball crew.
  13. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 29, 2007 -> 10:31 PM) I don't think he's picked up much baggage since SF, and some of that was BS. He's not the best catcher in the league, but he's far from the worst, and he seems to pick up big hits as much as anyone on the roster. If the Sox had anyone you could reasonably expect to be able to catch 120 major league games without embarrasing themselves in the next year or so, I would be all for gambling, but AJ is not getting a huge bump so he is giving a discount. He should be fine, especially if a compentent back up is in place. Agreed. Any catcher who can give you 120+ games with the results AJ puts up, even with the attitude, is something most teams are willing to acquire if they have catching needs. This is especially true when he is as affordable as he is under this contract. Let's remember too that this season was not his best. In fact, both offensively and defensively, its among his worst - and at age 30, I don't think that is because of his "aging". This was a good buy-low opportunity. The move was good anyway, he's still relatively young, and at times his fire and "attitude" have been big drivers for this club. And as many have said, the catching prospects in the minors leave a lot to be desired. D Lucy might be ready to be a backup in 2008, but really its more like 2009 (the only reason to even consider him in 2008 is that Hall was that bad). And while I am in the minority thinking he might be a serviceable major league starting catcher at some point, it is still a big might. More likely, he is a career backup (plays good D, handles pitchers well, hitting not so great).
  14. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 04:05 PM) It's clearly important, but you never know if something like that is encouraging until you see the end results. It could well be the harbinger of a civil war. coup d'etat
  15. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 03:40 PM) oh, I didn't know obama was still open...I'll take which ever he doesn't want. OK, I'll mark those two candidates off, and he can take one, and I'll give you the other.
  16. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 12:35 PM) I'm going for Alan Keyes...cause he's a crazy sonofab**** like me...except I'm white. which ain't easy... OK, let me make sure Chet Lemon doesn't want him, he kind of mentioned him first. Once I hear back from him on which of Obama or Keyes he wants, if he wants Obama, you can have Keyes.
  17. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 12:07 PM) I'll take Huckabee. Maybe I'll learn something from the dark side. Done.
  18. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 12:02 PM) I'm very quietly thinking, or maybe hoping, that ISU will give Nebraska a decent game. I don't think they are going to pull a 1992 on their asses.
  19. QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 12:02 PM) If I could take Mike Gravel that would be cool. Done.
  20. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 10:37 AM) Edwards is circling the drain now... He is going to take public finanicing because he can't keep up with the big dogs. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/TheNote/sto...5288&page=1 Good. I kind of hope he drops out early - I dislike him just as intensely as I do Hillary, if not more so. I'd really like to see Clinton fall back a bit, and Edwards' supporters go to Obama and/or Richardson.
  21. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 11:25 AM) If we're only looking @ the smaller guys, line me up with Dodd. You can take anyone you like, big or small. I have you with Dodd for now.
  22. QUOTE(Chet Lemon @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 11:27 AM) I will take Obama and his '04 Senate opponent and current Republican Presidential candidate Alan Keyes. Choose 1 for now - once a few days have passed, if others remain open, you can pick a second. Keyes or Obama?
  23. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 09:34 AM) FREDDY THOMPSON! Seriously, do you all think the Goracle is going to run? Done, and no.
  24. Here can be the master post for adoptions. I'll update it as people take candidates, like we do with AAP's... Current candidates for each party: Republicans Rudy Giuliani Mitt Romney John McCain (Texsox) Fred Thompson (kapkomet) Mike Huckabee (BigSqwert) Tom Tancredo Sam Brownback Duncan Hunter Ron Paul Alan Keyes (Sox4LifeinPA) Democrats Hillary Clinton Barack Obama (Chet Lemon) John Edwards Bill Richardson (NorthSideSox72) Joe Biden Dennis Kucinich (Soxy) Chris Dodd (Balta1701) Mike Gravel (GoSox05) I did not include Gore, Gingrich or any other non-declared candidates. They can be added later. USE THIS THREAD FOR declaring what candidates you want, and also if you want to provide profiles or links to profiles of your candidate. Everything ele should still go in the DEM and GOP candidate threads. Sound good? UPDATED: 9/30/07
  25. QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 09:07 AM) I was thinking it may be interesting and informative to have posters follow a campaign and adopt a candidate. The main guys are easy enough to follow, but some of the small candidates always seem to have some great agenda items that get incorporated into party platforms. I'm not certain if we would have individual threads for each candidate, I know we are trying to avoid that, but maybe under this format, or even lock them like Nuke's diary. I don't think we need individual threads. Maybe later when there are only a few left. For now, that would be too many. But I like the adoption idea. I'd love to see more updates in the DEM and GOP candidate threads. I'll take my guy Richardson. Next...
