4/30: White Sox at Twins, no crowd due to Age of Ultron
NorthSideSox72 replied to Quin's topic in 2015 Season in Review
QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 30, 2015 -> 10:16 AM) That's silly. Chris Sale is on the mound against Trevor May. The Sox should win this particular game. Of course they should. But games you should win, in baseball, are like 60% events, not 99% or 100%. It also only represents about 0.7% of the season - this isn't football. You really don't see the huge leap from "we should win this game" to "I seriously question this team if they don't"? -
QUOTE (Cknolls @ Apr 30, 2015 -> 09:45 AM) Wash Post came out with a report last night referncing another suspect in the back of the van with him. The other guy says he was trying to injure himself.....FWIW... Actually I think it was the Police that said that. And frankly I find it incredibly difficult to believe that the guy was not only trying to injure himself, but that he was able to do so in such a way that he nearly severed his spine. There should be cameras in the holding area of all police vehicles going forward, so that we don't have to even ask these questions.

4/30: White Sox at Twins, no crowd due to Age of Ultron

QUOTE (Mike F. @ Apr 30, 2015 -> 06:21 AM) If the Sox don't win this game, I just don't know what to say about this team. If you're willing to say that about any one regular season game, you must go through life being quite grumpy. -
QUOTE (Cknolls @ Apr 30, 2015 -> 06:53 AM) What charges would you like to see?........Murder?.... Negligence? From the sound of it, they handcuffed the guy and gave him the blender treatment in the back of the van. That's at least some sort of serious assault charges, or possibly whatever Maryland calls deadly assault. Murder might be within reach but I'd want to know more about the case first before I made that guess. In any case, hard to see how there wouldn't be very serious charges.

Recap posted. EJohnson had five very strong innings, and an error that should have been a DP caused much of the 6th inning damage. Adams obviously was a victim too, though even then I agree it was a quick hook.

QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 29, 2015 -> 03:20 PM) There was a whole section in here about the "2 years of college" minimum. OK you mean the cops then? I had no idea what you were referring to. It isn't that those 2 years in college teach them something in classes that will make the difference. It is a combination of life experience, the inherent bar to reach in even completing two years of school, and forcing candidates to engage the job as a career move instead of a "what do I do now" thing. Those all increase the quality of candidates.

QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 29, 2015 -> 03:15 PM) The idea that this is a problem of education levels I find not convincing. Who said that?

I know the standings just aren't that important for us here, but thought it was worth noting... Charlotte is alone in first place in their division, and Winston-Salem is in a virtual tie for first in theirs after winning 5 straight. The other two teams are 8-10 so its not as if they are getting destroyed either. Just nice to see some competitive life from teams other than Great Falls.

Mitchell all the way down to .050. Has 2 hits on the year. Striking out nearly half the time. And reports of less than stellar attitude. Let's start an over/under on the date he's released. I'll start with May 15.

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Apr 29, 2015 -> 12:09 PM) Just to clarify, NSS and I were discussing the Denver PD regarding a decrease in requirements to join the force. A quick Google search seems to indicate that the Chicago PD does in fact still require a minimum of 2 years of college. Though Google is certainly not infallible. Which makes it even more interesting when you look at those salary numbers I showed earlier. Chicago requires 2 years' of schooling, but pays far less than other city departments (especially when adjusted for C.O.L.). That combo right there narrows your pool considerably.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 29, 2015 -> 11:49 AM) I have a hard time believing that major cities don't get good candidates. CPD gets thousands of applicants for very few spots. They can pick and choose the good candidates. You're assuming the process is set up that way. Departments vary of course. But especially in large cities like Chicago, there are all sorts of stilited testing and point systems that involve lots of things not related to likely future success in police work. So while I'm sure they do get good candidates, I'm equally sure the people who get hired are not the best of the crop. Some will be good, others won't.

White Sox own best ERA since Apr 11
NorthSideSox72 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Sort of amazing, for how bad this team feels so far, they've now gone 8-6 since that nightmare KC series. Not sure if that makes me feel better or worse. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 29, 2015 -> 10:49 AM) Unless he is taking someone's spot, there are plenty of non prospects in Charlotte. Once they need the space, I'm sure he's at the top of the list or pretty close to be let go. They already kind of did this by bringing up Coats. That's the warning shot. I'd be surprised if Mitchell isn't gone (or back to BHAM again) very soon.

2015 White Sox draft pick discussion
NorthSideSox72 replied to southsider2k5's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 04:42 PM) At this point, I wouldn't be completely shocked if Barnum put it together and passed Trey. For some reason, he seems like he's going to end up close to Brent Morel statistically. Just a hunch. Hope I'm wrong. You keep saying this on Barnum. Earlier you said he's a T10 guy with a good season. He's a 1B with essentially one tool. That tool has yet to show anything in games, and the risk areas like swing-and-miss are prolific. His chances of being a top 10 prospect in the system in the future are slim at this point, at best. And certainly he won't be there this year. -
A couple Barons pitchers now missing in action. Montas hasn't pitched since April 20th, but isn't on the DL. Mike Recchia was supposed to start last night, but was pulled at the last minute with an unspecified injury. I'd have to think we'll hear something on both soon.
-
Danish for BHAM, per their press release.

QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Apr 29, 2015 -> 12:12 AM) It is too late now, but 8m a year sure seems cheap looking back at the crap we went through. AJ4L. If it wasn't for the recent awareness of personal attcks I'd tell all the sabermetrics fans to suck a dick. Couching your insults in statements like "I wouldn't, but..." does nothing to mitigate it. Watch your step, you're very close to the line.

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Apr 29, 2015 -> 08:31 AM) I'll ask Sanburn about his start and see if he will say anything revealing. Thanks! Yeah this gives you a couple new angles for your interview. Starting for him as possble long-term, and what put him in that position yesterday in the first place.
-
Recap posted. I've reached out to the Barons to see if they are willing to say what is up with Montas, but I doubt they will in this case.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:11 PM) http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/pro...jordan-guerrero I'll go with Guerrero simply because you can never have too many quality lefties...worst-case scenario, trade bait. And he's got youth on his side as well, only 20. Our prospects of the month is about performance, not rankings. If it was rankings it wouldn't change a lot month to month. But age and level are a factor. Then again, Dykstra threw a no-hitter and went something like 11 innings without giving up a hit. That's absurd. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:33 PM) Wasn't that his first CS? First two in fact, two CS in that game.
-
Dysktra was removed from the W-S game after 3 innings with an unspecified injury. Meanwhile, going to be hard to pick between Dykstra and Guerrero for pitcher of the month.

QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 02:05 PM) Philosophically I am opposed to government entities competing with private businesses for for-profit work. However, I do like the idea of a PD based "private" security firm. Its not done so much to compete. Here's what it is - they don't want their officers wearing a badge working outside gigs. Way too much risk of putting the department in a bad light, and officers in harm's way. Plus by bringing it in house, not only can they control the gigs they get, and give the officers all the protection of being effectively on duty, they also get some extra coin to plow back into the department. I'm honestly surprised more departments don't do the same.
-
What I didn't get into there either is, some departments use a points system for military and/or college time, effectively putting people with either or both of those at a major advantage in hiring.
