Kiley McDaniel / Fangraphs Top ChiSox Prospects

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 11:57 AM) I think commenting on the article would be awesome. Basically saying "you're welcome for the videos" in a very nice way to get a plug out there. Well they link to it, and it does say FutureSox right there when it opens. So they didn't steal it or anything. But I guess I could do that for fun, haha. -

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 08:42 AM) all too true, but man as I was saying, the future is looking great. 1 thing Scott Snodgress and Smith, do you think they can contribute in the majors??? I've got mixed feelings on Snodgress. Lefties who can throw a decent fastball and a curve are valuable, but he hasn't been able to throw strikes consistently, or miss many bats. I wouldn't write him off yet by any means, but I don't see him contributing in 2015. Smith is a guy I like more than some others, but likely as a bat-first backup. Which is harder to make work when he hits right-handed. He has some mechanical issues hitting, but those can be worked out and I think the bat will play in the majors at the catching position. Defensively, he has a strong arm and throws guys out enough, but reports on his receiving are not great. Pitcher handling has been said to be good. No useful info on framing that I've seen yet. In some ways he profiles similarly to Phegley (but more athletic). -

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 09:33 PM) Two days til Hoiball! Get ready for Iowa State to be one of your favorite power conference teams to watch. I'll be here as the other Cyclone, helping hold up the flag this season. It's been a bunch of years since Iowa State went into the season ranked this high. -

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 05:12 AM) 4er last nite ....... ouch. nerves. the overall performance of Anderson, Montas, and Bassitt, I am stoke. 4 nice looking baseball players with skills. future is looking good fellas I doubt it was nerves - final outing in a fall league, after doing very well until then? Nothing to be nervous about. More likely just had an off day, or maybe lost focus a bit. -
QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 03:40 PM) Lol yep, I just fact checked you from a post you've written yourself http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Major...rom_South_Korea FWIW, there were only 2 position players from South Korea in MLB history, Hee Seop Choi and Shin-Soo Choo. So I'd say we still have a 50% success rate here. I am old and forget things. What were we discussing again?

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 03:15 PM) Dude, clearly it says Lin's from Taiwan Son of a.... Well that's embarrassing, since I wrote the frigging AAP thread in the first place. Not sure why I thought he was Korean. My bad. Carry on.

So, this article won Best Post on ChicagoNow for October (from about 400 blogs and thousands of posts), which is pretty cool. Posts are nominated by the blogs, then Tribune editors and the like review them and select the best. We won. I was encouraged to pin this in PHT as a result, so, here it is! If you didn't read the post, linked in the OP, please do. If you already did, thanks!

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 12:16 PM) I agree and will say this. there can be a huge discrepancy when looking at players. I guess there is no right or wrong way to rate them. I am now going to ask a question that is not related to this. I hope you didn't take my comments I wrote personally. I wasn't saying this about you or future sox crew. I was talking about those who get paid to do it for a living. the mock draft experts. btw, I read the link. nice work. how long did it take to come up with everything in there. Didn't take it personally, just was pointing out that it is subjective by nature. There is no magic formula. Glad you liked the link. It didn't take long to put it together, because really, most of the FS writers are already familiar with all of that information. I just happened to take the time to write it down.

Might be worth mentioning too... the Sox did once spend relatively significant money on a Korean prospect - $300k on pitcher Po-Yu Lin. He was a huge disappointment.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 10:30 AM) People say the Cuba Serie Nacional is the rough competitive equivalent of A ball, if I remember right. Where does the Korean league relate? I think the comparisons fall down in Cuba, because of the small league. The way I've seen it described, there are guys there that range in ability from a typical Rookie league all the way to AAA and MLB, so it's hard to peg it. With Korea, just a quick browse of articles seems to put it at A or A+.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 07:39 AM) As much as I'd love Moncada, it's a pipe dream with Jerry Reinsdorf as the owner of the franchise. I hope I'm wrong. I don't even think its going to be a JR issue. He's willing to spend. The real problem is throwing away the next two years of amateur LatAm signings - which I don't think Hahn or KW are willing to do, just when that pipeline has started working again.

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 10, 2014 -> 08:31 PM) that is the problem of all these top 10 etc.... they are all subjective. where are the guidelines that are the bases for judging. M Adolfo i have hopes for as i do for all sox prospects, but to arbitrarily post him in the top 10. i hope i am wrong. It is subjective by nature - that isn't a problem, that is what it is. There are no specific, measureable criteria that tell you what you need to know. It is an amalgam of many things, and all the advanced stats in the world won't change that (they just add to the color). Read this.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 10, 2014 -> 10:45 AM) Susana Martinez. The Hispanic and Asian vote are going to be THE huge battleground in future elections. For a smaller state population-wise New Mexico sure has churned out some Prez candidates lately. Richardson was a Dem contender, former gov Johnson was the Libertarian candidate last cycle, and Martinez is on many short lists now. Martinez is pretty popular in her state, though there have been some insider-dealing stories around her. Nothing big, but could come up later. A bigger issue is that she has alienated a significant portion of the Hispanic population in her state (which is a varied and odd grouping there, but that's another story). She's pushed for voter ID laws and other legislation that fits with the GOP list of wants, but doesn't go over well with that population.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 10, 2014 -> 01:10 PM) For the opposite view of this franchise...I'll say that I'll always put money on the White Sox aggressively promoting players and go the other way. More specifically, they do it with select few key guys. The rest not as much. Hard to say which camp May falls into. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 10, 2014 -> 09:33 AM) While I agree, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if more than a few lists have him in the top 10. He's got well-regarded talent and held his own in his first full season of professional ball at A+, which is not an easy stop for minor leaguers. I expect him to start in AA next year which lends itself to the idea that he could be not far off from an MLB promotion. I'm not sure he's ready for AA. His speed is real and the defense is supposedly coming along nicely, but the bat isn't terribly impressive at this point. Contact rate is good (15% K/PA), but he doesn't walk a ton, shows no significant power (2 HR, .395 SLG in a very hitter-friendly park), and only hit .258 on the year. He did improve a lot after a disastrous April and mediocre May, but it was uneven (big June, OK July, hot August but only in 5 games). He also missed most of August with an injury. He's probably going to AA, but I wouldn't put money on it. I like him, but I'd struggle to put him higher than mid-teens at this point. As he's not likely to be a power guy at all, he needs to get on base and hit for high average and make that speed work for him. -

Adolfo way too high for my liking. Hawkins a little low. Otherwise looks like a good list to me. I might maybe flip Montas and Adams, but I can see the argument either way.

I like Dayn, talked baseball with him earlier this year at a Baseball Propectus event. But Jacob May is not, IMO, a T10 prospect in this system. More in the teens somewhere. -
Arizona Fall League - 7 Sox prospects

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 02:28 PM) yeah you are right. good catch, but I still mean the other things I wrote. 90 now is not what 90 was 20 or even 10 years ago. Very few pitchers are hitting the majors now with any success that can't crack 90. Like, almost none. Axelrod managed it, but he's a 6th starter at best, and only because he throws a lot of strikes and has heavy pitches. There are exceptions of course. That doesn't mean you need to throw 95 though. Tyler Danish will never hit 95, in fact his fastballs will usually be 88-92 or so, but he's got crazy movement, lots of sink and a deceptive delivery. He may represent, in the current game, the near-bottom-end of the playable fastball velocity range. -

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 10:31 AM) many thanks for your hard work. what gets me and I am 100% guilty of this. looking down on pitchers who pitch in the low 90's. I guess with the era of the power arm pitchers who pitch in the mid 90's as a starter got me train to look for that kind of arm. if he is like Bassitt who has the ability to miss bats while piching in the 90 range. that is one thing. Bassitt's fastball runs 92-96. That's a far cry from "the 90 range".
