  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 01:21 PM) While I don't think having weed at your house is a very big deal, and loud music constantly is being an ass , not a criminal, I doubt if it was some Ag student busted, or a walk on, that the charges would be dropped. Actually they often are for such a small thing. They broke up a loud party and found a small amount of weed in a dresser. That kind of thing gets pushed aside, or just a municipal citation, all the time in. Especially in college environments like that. Not saying that didn't play a factor, it might have. Just saying it is commonplace for things like that to get thrown out. The judge cited probable cause issues - why does a loud party justify searching dresser drawers? It likely doesn't, thus it was thrown out.
  2. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 11:39 AM) And all charges have been dropped Sounds like he had a party and mary jane was in the apartment. Also worth noting, the spokesman for Ames PD said they'd been to that apartment half a dozen times in recent weeks due to noise and other complaints.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 11:58 AM) Do we know that there wasn't an offer back done and refused? JJ Cooper from BA also tweeted out specifically about this, saying there is no level-specific requirement for those phases. Player just needs to stay in system playing for a year.
  4. Point of clarification - the AAA/AA phase does not mean you have to stay in AAA/AA for a year. Example: Omar Narvaez, who the Sox took last year, was in A ball all year.
  5. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 08:57 AM) And Iowa State loses Dejean-Jones to a freaking drug house arrest. What an idiot. Seriously? Ugh. Not seeing anything in news reports on this, at least not yet.
  6. Just want to point out on the light bulb thing, there are still some devices that simply don't work with CFL's or LED's yet. Like my garage door opener/motor light housing for example. I'd rather not see incandescent bulbs outright banned yet - better to continue helping the transition happen naturally in the business world by continuing incentive programs from utilities (let them write them off in some way), and helping US manufacturers with the cost of build on bulbs. The transition is happening anyway, no need to get into some sort of panic. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 08:05 AM) And we should. I do agree with this.
  7. If you take a player in the MLB portion, you have to keep them in the majors or on DL the entire season, and there are strict limits to the DL length. Whomever you pick needs to be on the 25-man roster the full year, or you lose 25k and give them back. Not that 25k is a problem, but it is more an issue of degrading your roster if all you want to do is hide someone. In Nieto's case, the team had a very real need. And that pick was still a mistake IMO, he was obviously not ready, though he wasn't quite as bad as I thought he'd be. The worst part was he basically lost a year of development, while not providing anything on the roster that existing players in the system couldn't have done just as well. If they grab someone, it is because they think they have a legit shot to help the club, likely an arm.
  8. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 02:18 PM) Do we have anyone available other than Jared Mitchell? Not that he'll get picked. The highest level guys that are exposed are very, very low risk for being taken in the MLB phase. Mitchell at the top, followed by guys like RHP Braulio Ortiz (big time fastball but never above AA and can't hit a barn door from 5 feet), RHP Mike Recchia (who has only a half season in AA and has no plus pitches), etc. No one anyone would pick barring a huge surprise. I'd personally be fine if Mitchell was drafted anyway. He may benefit from a change of scenery, he's shown no signs of life in years in this system, and it makes room for guys who I have more confidence in.
  9. After the Shark trade, the Sox have two open 40-man slots, now right? Sort of unclear on that right now. I could see them going for an arm to help the bullpen. Remember too, the Sox picked up 2 guys in the AAA/AA portions last year as well, so they may be active at that level if not MLB.
  10. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 01:09 PM) I know the law to be similar in Illinois; the police have extremely limited (if no actual) discretion. If there is probable cause to believe DV has occurred (a very low bar which is cleared even by "He said/She said"), arrests are to be made so that the courts, not the cops, can sort it out. Doesn't mean you have to do it then, but certainly they should. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 01:51 PM) Google it. It's the reason Frank Clark was arrested immediately. It's to stop the "misunderstanding" or intimidation that leads to cases being dropped. If the officer sees evidence of assault in a domestic abuse allegation there will be an offender taken into custody. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 02:00 PM) To NOT make an arrest in Ohio they have to submit a report and request on why they didn't make an arrest. Because of that they always take someone into custody as it's expected. Of course that's if there is actual evidence of some sort of assault taking place. This is a differentiation of affirmative evidence. If there is evidence, then yeah, they arrest (it used to be you needed someone willing to sign a complaint, but that hasn't been true in a while). If there isn't, they don't. But it is also true that you can find examples of DV reports and arrests happening after the fact - if you prevent that, you essentially make the statute of limitations almost immediate. If the cops are there, and don't make an arrest, but do later, yes that is unsual. No, it is not prevented from happening.
  11. I just remembered too, there is also Erik Johnson. He isn't a guy I'd write off yet. Not for the opening day rotation of course, but he very well could bounce back and create even more depth. Still think they are missing someone more reliable for one more slot though.
  12. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 12:29 PM) In ohio if there is truly domestic abuse its the law that someone has to be taken in. In this case nobody was taken, there are no signs of violence, no report filed and no medical attention applied. So not much of anything. Show me this "law", because it makes no sense. DV arrests can happen well after the fact, and there is no per se requirement for hospitalization to occur. Those things I know. Beyond that, I see virtually no chance the law says anything like what you are saying here. But I am open to be corrected - show me.
  13. QUOTE (oldsox @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 11:24 AM) Ravelo would have helped the Sox in a year or two at the most. LaRoche gone after 2016. Ravelo was ticketed for AAA this year and probably major league ready in 2016. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a solid big league career. I still like the trade, just wish we could have kept him. Do we get two draft picks if Shark goes away? One from Oakland and one compensation pick? Ravelo will be ready in 2015 or 2016, if he is ever ready. LaRoche is around through 2016, and by then, numerous other prospects will make their way through the system. Barnum for one, and also remember lots of failed prospects at other positions become 1B's. Ravelo was blocked. If the Sox make a QO to Shark after the season and he turns it down, the Sox get one comp pick, not from anyone but created out of thin air.
  14. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 10:54 AM) The reason that Danks was unacceptable was because he went into the season with expectations of being our 3rd best starter and was making $14 million. If Danks was a fifth starter making peanuts like Noesi, nobody would have any complaints. While I agree we should probably add another starter, unless Rodon is ready, Noesi was perfectly acceptable as a fifth starter. I would be perfectly content with my fifth starter putting up a 4.39 ERA over 166 innings. No doubt. But that's just it, it should be one of Noesi OR Danks as the #5, with Beck/Recchia/Carroll/whomever as 6-8 in Charlotte. Need that 4th guy for a year at least.
  15. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 10:43 AM) Without looking it up, tell me which 2014 line was John Danks, and which was Hector Noesi: 4.75 ERA (4.83 FIP), 6.42 K/9, 2.92 BB/9, 1.46 HR/9, 38% GB (0.6 fWAR) 4.74 ERA (4.76 FIP), 5.99 K/9, 3.44 BB/9, 1.16 HR/9, 42% GB (0.8 fWAR) Actually, don't bother. I already forget which one is which because they're basically the same. If John Danks is unacceptable, Hector Noesi is also unacceptable. Rodon's ETA is not guaranteed, nor is his instant dominance when he does arrive. The best remaining options behind these two are Andre Rienzo and Eric Surkamp. Chris Beck? This team needs another arm. The cost difference is important for the team's future. But you are right that either one, really, should be your #5. Need a #4 other than Waiting for Rodon. Rienzo and Surkamp are relievers anyway, they aren't starting unless something has gone wrong. Beck, and maybe Recchia, are the guys I'd slot in as depth, but neither are likely to be any better than those two (at least not at first) and need another year to develop. Carroll on a MiLB deal to re-sign makes nice depth, but again, that 4th slot is screaming for a 1-year rental or maybe 2 years at most. And ideally they can trade Danks at some point. McCarthy would be great, but others may work too.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 04:40 PM) Is he related to the Ynoa we tried to sign this summer out of Latin America? Brother.
  17. For those asking about Ynoa, it's in here (incl a video link), along with the Sox prospects.
  18. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 11:41 AM) CL Robertson R SU Petricka R MR Duke L MR Putnam R MR Ynoa R LOOGY Surkamp L LR Beck That's my guess. Ynoa has barely over a full year of pro innings and hasn't pitched above Advanced A ball. Zero chance he sees the majors in 2015, probably not even 2016. Also highly doubt they'd put in Beck as a long reliever.
  19. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 02:38 PM) 2 HR in 190 career PA. Fun fact - that is a higher HR rate than Ravelo had in any minor league season before 2014. Not that those data points mean much against each other, just thought it was amusing.
  20. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 01:21 PM) I disagree. Last year was the first time in 3 years he pitched that many innings. Hw was gassed at the end but the Sox needed to push him to get the innings up. He will still be the up and down pitcher but this year the ups will be more frequent in the latter third of the season. He will be better than most 4 or 5 starters. Which is why I also think the Sox may be smart to hold onto Danks until July. Let Rodon warm up to the role (ideally in AAA, but maybe the pen), and give Danks a shot to improve. He also has less money on his contract then. Just makes sense.
  21. So if you trade Danks, leaving Sale-Shark-Q at the front of the rotation, you now have to fill two slots with some combo of Noesi, Beck, and/or someone you acquire in the meantime. That is a steep drop-off. Rodon can be a 4th, but they are making it sound like he's in the pen to start (or AAA). The other considerable pitching prospects (Montas, Danish, Adams, etc.) are not ready, and the guys between like Recchia are not likely to be much more than #5 guys. You have no room for error. You'd need to find another starter, maybe a McCarthy or someone like that. I don't think you want to go into 2014 Opening Day with Beck, Recchia or anyone else at that level in the rotation if it can be avoided. Both may be more ready later, but neither are now IMO.
  22. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 09:54 AM) I'm amazed in this day and age the 3rd player hasn't been leaked yet. Sox and A's front offices are sealed tight. I'm trying to check some back channels, sometimes we get wind of minor stuff before it blows up, but I haven't seen anything yet.
  23. Chris was one of the best player sources FutureSox ever worked with, so I wanted to start this thread and point that out. He did an interview with us and was unusually honest, wrote a guest article for us, kept us up to date on goings-on including occasional "insider" stuff, and was just generally great to work with. Here is the article he wrote for us early this year, and here is our interview with him from 2013. So, best of luck in Oakland, Chris. I'll be rooting for you (except against the Sox of course).
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 07:41 AM) This puts the White Sox at just over $100 million by my count. Does that include arb/pre-arb guys?
