QUOTE (seanjon21 @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 03:59 PM) Im sorry, I can not indulge my source info. Will have to see next week ?????? My source hasn't failed me yet. I get the feeling your source's name starts with 'T' and ends in 'erance'. But we'll see.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 03:11 PM) You don't say you made money and cut payroll. I believe Forbes numbers. It isn't about believing or not believing Forbes' numbers. It is that OI is not the same as NI, or is it the same as true profit. You keep forgetting that. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 03:12 PM) You can't spend $1 when you have $0.50. Again - the Sox have a budget for payroll. Like virtually all teams do in any given year. You are somehow contorting that into meaning the Sox have no money, or are saying they have no money.

A couple clubs said they will release rosters early next week. If anyone catches word of it happening earlier for any teams, feel free to post it here.

QUOTE (seanjon21 @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 03:49 PM) The word was Terance Marin was moving to AA, but they decided to keep him on high A as a starter now. Does anybody have any info ? He threw the other day in spring training 5 innings, 1 hit, 1 run, 5 k's, 0 walks... 42 pitches. ??????? They are converting him to a starter? That's interesting. Where did you hear that? And where did you hear about his level to open the year? Minor league clubs are saying they will release rosters probably early next week, we'll know more then. I'm sure some players know already.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 02:58 PM) Reinsdorf said they lost money. Why are you so confident he's lying? That's the other part - these numbers are partially estimated, and don't show the whole picture. Jerry says they lost money, and they may have. Or maybe they made $20M, or more. We don't know. Jerry hasn't said the Sox have no money, he's said they make a little some years, and lose a little others, and that they lost last year. And Hahn/KW say they have flexibility, but only to a point.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 02:53 PM) 2011 was not a financial disaster. The Sox have done a great job making the public believe they have no money. Show us. Show us where you have seen, in the past few years, the Sox trying to make people believe that. At worst, I've see Hahn and/or KW say they have a budget to work within (like ALL teams do), but that there is flexibility there for special circumstances. As far as I can tell, "the public" is only you, because only you seem to believe they are saying that.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 11:47 AM) You're assuming they would not be a better team, draw more fans, and make a postseason. No, the only one making an assumption is you - that they WOULD draw more fanst and make a postseason more often. Maybe they would, maybe not, we're talking about baseball here. And we aren't talking about going from an Astros payroll to a Dodgers payroll here either. Those results are FAR from guaranteed. And what happens when they spend the money and DON'T make it? Now you are not only losing that $10M, they are losing even more in successive seasons.
-
This team still has a top 10 or close payroll, year after year, despite drawing crowds usually in the bottom half of baseball... they've increased their international and draft spending dramatically... and cut ticket (and parking) prices by a large chunk for this season. And they know they will take a hit this year with the Red Line construction. But, yeah, clearly they are being cheap. Also, as someone else mentioned, OI is not profit. Those are not the same. NI is closer, but also still not the full picture. You don't really know how much money this club made in profit, other than, it wasn't a very huge one. And by the way, even if the Sox were operating as some sort of NFP or a co-op, they'd still want to set their budget with a small positive net flow target. They can only predict the season's revenues within a certain level of precision, with significant downside risk against guaranteed money contracts. So the only smart thing to do is leave that margin, then once the season/FY is over, plow it back or do whatever with it, if it is there.

QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 04:51 PM) Alexei day-to-day. Right shoulder contusion. contusion? How can he have a bruise when his shoulder is all bone and ligaments? Seriously though, no biggie there.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 03:42 PM) With the way Omogrosso pitched this spring, I kinda want Crain to get lit up here, and go on the DL. Careful there - look at his peripherals. He's done well, but having more walks than K's isn't sustainable with a low ERA for long. He's been good keeping the hits at bay though.

QUOTE (BFirebird @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 03:27 PM) I haven't seen much of this ST but Beckham was really quick on that inside pitch. Not a lot of wasted movement. Let's hope that translates to the regular season. I've seen a couple scouty-type people tweet that they saw a real difference in his bat quickness this spring.

QUOTE (BFirebird @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 12:42 PM) I thought the Indians released Matsuzaka? Released him from his original deal, then re-signed him to a minor league deal.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 26, 2013 -> 03:55 PM) I wouldn't really read into too much. They'll probably be down to 27 or 28 by the time they get on the plane tomorrow. Not worried, just curious what the thought process is, on how they decide these things. Since they can use minor leaguers in games anyway, and there are players who already know they won't make it barring injury... why the theater? Why bother announcing reassignments at all?
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 26, 2013 -> 02:41 PM) Gray, Omogrosso, Troncoso, Anderson (not Phegley) Tolleson, Bell I don't get keeping Tolleson and Bell in camp, they aren't getting jobs for OD. Anderson I get, they always keep a 3rd catcher around in AZ. Omogrosso and Troncoso are in the running for Crain's spot if he isn't ready... but Gray?
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 26, 2013 -> 02:27 PM) Danks and Septimo placed on the 15-day DL. Purcey reassigned to minor league camp. 31 left in camp. Who are the extra six left in camp right now? Omogrosso, one of the catchers (Phegley I think), and who else?

The Annual "Who is the 3rd Catcher" Thread

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Mar 26, 2013 -> 11:08 AM) lol Still no explanation on Flowers, eh? -
I like to start this thread every spring. Who is the 3rd/emergency catcher on this club, now that the roster is set? With Ventura saying he may 1B or DH Flowers on occasion, it might actually come up at some point. Thoughts?

I went to the game last Wednesday with my four year old daughter, wife, father and uncle. Stadium is pretty nice, though most seats are very exposed. Food was good. My daughter got her first autographs, in one of those Sox 101 books - she loved it. Here was our signing experience... --Seth Loman was her first autograph. He had been making his way down the line, then stepped away and appeared to be headed for the dugout. Then he saw the little 4 year old girl in the pink Sox outfit holding out her book and marker, and he stopped and turned back to get to her. He also put a bible verse number (John 3:3) after his sig. --Conor Gillaspie signed a few, including hers --Harold Baines signed a ton, including hers --Daryl Boston was making his way down the line, but got called away --Finally, got Robin Ventura, who actually had a short conversation with my daughter which was nice, in addition to signing. --She got tired of it after that, wanted to go eat... but Alexei Ramirez did some signing rgith after we left. If you want autographs at Camelback, get seats along the 1B/RF line, from the dugout going outward. I bought ours just a day or so after they went on sale, and got 5th row, first section after the 1B dugout, for just $15 each.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Mar 23, 2013 -> 06:39 PM) Man, that normal curve is pretty normal Sitting at 86-87 wins. The fact that Danks isn't putting on strength fast enough concerns me a bit, but I kind of anticipated a slightly late start and career average performance from him. Hopefully he can do that. -
Released, per BA.

Traded for Conor Gillaspie. Closing thread, going to archives.

Released, per BA. Kind of a surprise, not sure what the deal there was. Closing thread, will move to archives later.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 24, 2013 -> 05:09 PM) I hadn't even heard of the last three. I feel like there is something more to know about the Linza release. He was a low round pick, but did well in relief in his draft year at Bristol, and was OK in Great Falls in the rotation last year. Has plus control. Seems odd to let him go - I wonder if he elected to leave or something.

2013 Win-Loss Prediction Thread - Annual and Official

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 18, 2013 -> 11:36 AM) I think hitters tend to have a bit more success when they step out, but Buehrle never lets them get comfortable in the box. They step out, step back in, and the second they look up, there's a pitch coming. He never gives the opposition much time to think. Every pitch he throws looks exactly the same coming out too. It's not easy when you have no idea what he's throwing and you have no time to think. And then when you get in that rhythm, he is slower and more deliberate to get you to overthink at the plate. To me, more than command or control or varying his stuff perfectly, keeping hitters (and baserunners) uncomfortable is what makes him successful more than anything. There was a Fangraphs (I think) article a while back that I thought perfectly illustrated why MB was so successful. They had lists of the 10 or 20 best of each kind of pitch in the majors - fastball, cutter, splitter, slider, curve, change, etc. Despite the fact that Buehrle wasn't on any of those lists, they made a special note about him. Most starting pitchers have 3 or 4 pitches they throw total, and few had more than one or two that were above average. MB has 5 pitches he throws regularly... 4 of which are above average, but all just slightly so. So, as a hitter, you face a pitcher, you probably know the 1 or maybe 2 good pitches a guy throws. With Mark, they all come out of his hand the same, but it could be one of 4 distinct pitches, which he can locate anywhere. That makes it awfully tough to hit him. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 17, 2013 -> 08:32 PM) That is the first time I can ever recall seeing the White Sox minor league system dubbed "underrated." I saw it in a BA article as well. That's twice. I think often times, the overall ratings and evaluations of systems by the national writers is a lag behind reality. The system is improving, as most people now note, but I think it is more improved than putting it 27th or 28th. I see pretty dramatic improvement the past couple years. Similarly, systems that have been very good for a while, often see their prospects inflated for a while, before it is realized that the system has headed downhill.
