  1. QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 25, 2013 -> 01:09 PM) Did anyone hear Nick Capra on White Sox Weekly over the weekend? He mentioned a pitcher that would have been in the rotation at Winston-Salem, and he retired on Saturday. I wasn't paying attention, so I missed the name. I went back to listen on the podcast, and it sounds like they purposely edited out that part of the interview. Not sure, could be a number of people. Here are the guys I'd say could at least MAYBE have been in W-S rotation this year (leaving out the guys who are known to be in camp therefore not retiring, i.e. Johnson and Snodgress,or guys I've seen tweeting from camp)... Justin Collop Stephen McCray Spencer Arroyo (but again, doubt it) Jake Petricka (but he's more likely in AA) Ryan Buch Jarrett Casey Myles Jaye (I highly doubt this one as well) Chris Hanna Among those names, only Petricka, Arroyo, Buch and Jaye are guys I'd consider prospects. The others are org guys.
  2. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 19, 2013 -> 04:19 PM) I thought bicyclists had to follow the same rules of the road as a car in a situation like that True, except when there is a bike lane, then that changes things. If no bike lane, then a bike is essentially a car. Also, I do agree with one point made above - you kind of have to be at least somewhat defensive of your lane on the bike. If you don't "own" your lane, drivers think that means they can squeeze past you in said lane.
  3. If there is a marked bike lane with a turn lane on the other side of it, the bikes have full right of way to the lane. Cars are supposed to check before crossing the lane - they will be going faster than the bikes usually, that is why it is done this way. But yes, you do need to check your side mirror for bikes before doing it, in case they are indeed coming from behind. Bikes are also supposed to slow down in that situation though. As a cyclist who spent multiple summers commuting to work downtown on a bike, I can tell you this scenario is not one of the common ones. The bigger problems are people opening doors to cars without checking the mirror first (did everyone forget that from drivers' ed?), and drivers wandering into the bike lane or stopping in it. Also, as a cyclist who follows the rules pretty much (just as drivers speed or maybe roll an occasional stop, I have been known to blow a light IF there is literally no traffic), it drives me nuts to see the cyclists who flout the laws and piss off drivers. It causes anger, which in turn drivers take out on ALL cyclists, even if we are trying to be reasonable. I'd be ecstatic if CPD started making a real effort to crack down on car-bicycle law scofflaws, both in cars and on bikes.
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 13, 2013 -> 03:23 PM) Is that indicating like there was someone thinking he was going to make the MLB team out of camp? That was never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever going to happen. *barring injuries to, say, two outfielders ahead of him (out of the starting 3 plus Wise and Danks).
  5. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 13, 2013 -> 11:35 AM) Ben Badler at Baseball America has an article about the increase in spending internationally since the arrival of Marco Paddy. Anyone have access to the content? SSS has a similar piece up, worth reading.
  6. QUOTE (JoshPR @ Feb 12, 2013 -> 03:41 PM) I'm thinking on having a road trip to chi-town round may or June, need some help here do the prices on tickets change or could I get a better deal if I would buy closer to the date? And any advise on where to stay? I mean a decent place but not too harsh on the budget, it's all in beta yet, but I want to explore options and I'm trying to gather info. Any advise would be appreciated If it is a popular game where it is likely to sell out or get close to selling out, you are better off buying sooner rather than later. Also, if your seat location is very important to you, also better to do it soon - but not necessarily right now. Season ticket holders won't have their tickets up on Stub Hub until March sometime, so I'd wait until then, and see what deals you can find. If you don't much care where you sit, and the games are not like Cubs or Yankees or Red Sox... then you can wait until the last minute and get very cheap tickets. As for places to stay... start with www.tripadvisor.com.
  7. Leesman is out until at least mid-season, recovering from knee surgery after an injury in the IL playoffs last fall.
  8. As we go into the 2013 season, these prospects are all still available for "adoption" in our AAP area. Grab one while you can... ALL 2012 Draft Picks OTHER THAN Hawkins, Barnum, Beck, DeMichele, Brennan, Barazza and Grabe Chris Bassitt Andrew Brackman Jason Coats Michael Earley Justin Greene Kyle Hansen Deunte Heath Myles Jaye Justin Jirschele Micah Johnson Daniel Moskos Santos Rodriguez Thomas Royse Juan Silverio Blake Tekotte
  9. For all you fans who like to keep track of Sox and other prospects, make sure you follow @FutureSox on Twitter as we start the season.
  10. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 12, 2013 -> 07:53 AM) spring training is f***ing long... Ruining the buzz, man.
  11. Before you even talk to a dealer, go here: truecar.com. You will thank me later.
  12. Per Gonzo. So, who is the Charlotte rotation now, on Opening Day? I'm assuming Axelrod gets the long relief role and Santiago starts for Danks to begin the season so... I'd have to guess something like Castro, Molina, Rienzo, Stewart and Zaleski, with Stewart sliding to the 'pen when Santiago goes back down (because I think ultimately that is where they want him). Stewart could potentially win the LR role over Axelrod, but I doubt they want him in that role.
  13. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 7, 2013 -> 04:18 PM) Well, that's all going to be a bit much. I'm pretty sure they already did the Han Solo back story, it was called Firefly.
  14. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 7, 2013 -> 04:38 PM) Google Maps added the Grand Canyon to their Street Views. You can "hike" down every trail in the Grand Canyon with full 360 deg. views. Apparently they've also had a bunch of ski slopes on there already, too. Must go see right now. Haven't gotten to do the Bright Angel yet, I guess I can do it virtually.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 7, 2013 -> 04:50 PM) Saladino 2 years ago reminds me of Sanchez last year. I'd say only in terms of hype level and fast moving. They have very different tool sets, and have taken different progressions when taken as a whole career thus far.
  16. MLB.com posted their Top 20. Usually their list shows some bias towards players the org obviously wants to play up, often guys who have been around awhile. Here is their list: 1. Courtney Hawkins 2. Trayce Thompson 3. Erik Johnson 4. Carlos Sanchez 5. Jared Mitchell 6. Scott Snodgress 7. Keon Barnum 8. Keenyn Walker 9. Andre Rienzo 10. Nestor Molina 11. Chris Beck 12. Brandon Brennan 13. Jhan Marinez 14. Charlie Leesman 15. Simon Castro 16. Josh Phegley 17. Marcus Semien 18. Joey DeMichele 19. Santos Rodriguez 20. Tyler Saladino Mitchell, Molina, Brennan and Leesman seem high to me. Castro and Semien seem low.
  17. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 7, 2013 -> 08:13 AM) Personally, I think Sanchez is a better choice. He runs and can field. Not a lot of bat. That's really all you ask for. Beyond that, you'd hope he'll never be a starter for you. Beyond that, as a Rule V player, he either has to stay with the MLB team or be sent back. Saladino, on the other hand, still has the opportunity to develop into a starting caliber player, even if it's a long shot. With as many options as he has left, there's literally no reason to bring him up and have him sit on the bench. I agree with all of this. Also, despite (or maybe partially because of) the fact that RV liked him and kept him in big league camp a little longer last year, he actually sort of struggled last season in transitioning to AA. And there have been disappointing reports on his defense. That signals to me that he's not ready, and that if you bring him up and stick him on the bench, he'll be pretty awful.
  18. White Sox official Twitter account tweeted for Marcus - impressive!
  19. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 6, 2013 -> 10:51 AM) Keith Law released his Organizational Top 10 rankings today on ESPN Insider. White Sox 1. Courtney Hawkins 2. Carlos Sanchez 3. Andre Rienzo 4. Trayce Thompson 5. Erik Johnson 6.Scott Snodgress 7.Keenyn Walker 8.Joey DeMichele 9. Jared Mitchell 10. Chad Beck (Should be Chris). Law reiterates that Hawkins is there best position player prospect in a long time and I believe Law had him as the #73 prospect in all of baseball. Law said that Johnson will help the big league club sooner than Snodgress. Also said they are both back end starters. (I know many feel that Johnson has #2 starter potential). Law mentions that the Sox had a good draft and went with high school players and was positive about their direction. Also mentions that Rienzo could be good once through the order in a relief role this season. Keith Law says that Walker showed surprising patience and he and Snodgress were both of the "Sleeper" prospects that Law mentioned. Rienzo at 3 seems high, especially if he thinks he is a reliever. DeMichelle at 8 seems waaaaay high to me. Too low a ceiling, though he is pretty polished.
  20. QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 02:21 PM) I'm pretty sure Brackman is right-handed. The article states him as a lefty. You are correct, and I fixed the article the other day. Sorry about that.
  21. I could have had all my paperwork to the accountant a week ago, but Schwab still hasn't released 1099's. Everyone else in the world gets stuff out by end of January, but every year, Schwab is at least a week behind.
  22. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Feb 4, 2013 -> 12:12 PM) Has anyone ever filed an amended tax return? I just found out that the student loan interest on my private loan, that I've never claimed as a deduction, actually could have been claimed all these years. I've always received a 1098 or whatever it's called for the student loan interest on my federal loan, but since I never received anything from my private bank (Citi), I just had assumed it wasn't deductible come tax time. Anyways, I got them to send me my interest dollars paid from the past three years because I was thinking of doing some amended returns. If anyone's done it, is it a hassle? I downloaded the 1040-X forms already but I am going to have to do a full 1040 over again for those years in addition to this? Before expending the effort, you should first check your income level versus ability to deduct. Once you make over a certain threshold, you can either only deduct a limited amount, or none at all, from student loans.
