  1. Salt River 9, Phoenix 2 Wilkins: 1-5, K, R C Sanchez: 1-3, 2B, 2 BB, 2 RBI, R, CS S Rodriguez: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K Santos seems to be calming down now after 2 rough outings to open the AFL. Last 5 games: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K. Wilkins has come back down to earth a bit, but he has still gotten a hit in 11 of the 12 games he's played in. And he walked twice in the game he didn't get a hit. Strike outs seem a little high though. Sanchez isn't hitting a ton, but I like that he continues to show a good batter's eye - his Iso OBP is .126, thanks to 8 walks.
  2. As for Flowers being exposed, I think the opposite may actually happen. He may benefit from playing more. If he can draw a lot of walks (like he did in most of his minor league career), hit 20+ home runs, and continue to show he's a defensive upgrade over AJ... he might actually be a wash with AJ, but for a heck of a lot cheaper. The only thing he's missing, are the intangibles - and it is hard to say what impact those have. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 30, 2012 -> 04:13 AM) So, a weaker armed Karkovice? Eh? Karko was never that good a hitter, he was usually .210's or .220's as a full time player, with about half that much power (except one season). Karko was a defensive catcher who tried to, but never really did, learn to become a hitter. Flowers is the opposite.
  3. For local effect... they are now predicting that around Wednesday, there will be 20 to 30 foot waves in southern Lake Michigan, as the storm remnants cross the eastern Great Lakes and shove the water west. Could be significant lakefront flooding in Chicagoland. Also, seperately... anyone read about the HMS Bounty? Replica ship now mostly for tourists, lost power, foundered and sank off North Carolina. 14 people had to be rescued, and 2 are missing. WTF were they even DOING out there in this?
  4. Weekend catch-up... Friday; Salt River 8, Peoria 7 Wilkins: 1-4, BB, 2 K, RBI, R C Sanchez: 0-3, BB, R, SB Tr Thompson: 0-4, K Rodriguez: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K Saturday: Salt River 12, Mesa 6 Wilkins: 1-6, K, RBI Tr Thompson: 2-4, HR, BB, 2 RBI, 2 R S Sanchez: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, WP Ta Thompson: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 27, 2012 -> 10:55 PM) But seasonticketholders are responsible for what the people who buy their tickets do at those games. Sort of. I asked our ticket rep about this... since it is the Sox now promoting the use of Stub Hub to sell unused tickets (you can literally sell them on Stub Hub from the Sox site), the rules have changed. They can't promote an avenue to sell your tickets, and then hold you responsible for the random people using them.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 29, 2012 -> 09:28 AM) It is just going to mean salary inflation. Yes. Though, now that I think about it... if the amount of money is going to be basically the same for ALL teams, then this actually benefits the smaller market teams more than the larger market teams. $50M a year for the Royals is like doubling their payroll. For the Yankees, its nice, but not a huge difference maker.
  7. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 29, 2012 -> 09:22 AM) They just extended the network TV contracts 8 years at more than double what they were getting. Every team is going to be bringing in an extra $25 million or more starting in 2014. The total for 8 years for the network contracts is 12,400,000,000. I divided by 8 and by 30 for the yearly figure. They will get 51,666,666.67 a year from these contracts alone. From what I read, they had been getting about $25 million. Salaries will be jumping. Interesting. Helps them financially, but since all the teams are getting equal dollars (right?) more or less, it doesn't change competitive stance.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 27, 2012 -> 11:23 PM) They are going to need to get more people to the park, but keep in mind, starting in 2014, their TV money more than doubles from Fox, ESPN and Turner. They will be pulling in over $50 million a year from them. Its not entirely out of the realm of possibility the Sox have a higher payroll than most imagine in coming years. Sorry to respond late on this, but... what is this referring to? Why are the Sox suddenly going to get $50M more dollars A YEAR from those networks? And how are the other teams effected?
  9. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 27, 2012 -> 08:03 PM) I think your still starry-eyed from having Boyer chat you up. Sad.
  10. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 27, 2012 -> 09:58 AM) The Sox are thankful for their attendance problem because the narrative of the offseason is how do we get fans in the park instead of another second half collapse. Do you have to pollute every thread with this, even when it is completely unrelated? Not to mention the idea in your post is absurd. You are saying a business is happy to make less money because it distracts from a quality argument? That is laughable.
  11. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 05:10 PM) Should make it so that all new employees are on ss like the rest of the country and just stop pensions for all new hires. Phase them out, get rid of them. ESPECIALLY elected officials. And end the double, triple and so on dipping they get when they hold more than one elected office. Damn Emil f-ing Jones probably has 7 or 8 different pensions coming whenever that crook retires. THAT is not right. ending the double-dipping and pay-rush at end of career nonsense is a good idea, but only fixes a tiny part of the problem. The first part of your post is the meat. Need to go to some sort of 401k-type plan, and get away from pensions, but... if you do that in one fell swoop, you will take money away from those already on pensions. The solution is going to be painful no matter what at this point, unfortunately. A gradual move to 401k-type plans, no new pensions for new entrants, will have to have another cash flow from somewhere. Where?
  12. QUOTE (retro1983hat @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 01:01 PM) It has been mentioned elsewhere in this thread, but I think the Sox missed their opportunity when they had the chance to move to Addison. Yes, some of the old-time, die-hard Southsiders would be upset and may be lost as fans. However, the Cell is cut off from the more trendy parts of the city. Yes, the South Loop is improving, but that's several miles north. (Moving there would have been a great option) Anyways, a great majority of the old Southsiders moved their families out to the burbs. Studies have shown a vast majority of the Sox fans live outside the city limits. So by moving to Addison, where 290 and 355 meet, just north of I-88, just south of I-90, and just west of I-294, the Sox could basically own everything from the city limits out. Easy access in and out. Public transportation would have been an issue, though. The Angels embraced being in the OC and they let the Dodgers have LA. Now Anaheim is a major market team. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 01:04 PM) DuPage County = 900K people Orange County = 3M people Comparison fail. Also, removing mass transit options pretty much entirely is an epic fail. So is taking your team away from the center of population. And the neighborhood generally they have been for over a century. And away from where most people work.
  13. Pass or not, this move would at best make only the tiniest of dents in the problem.
  14. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 03:29 PM) some Cook county judge is legally insane. but she always wins come election time. There is a handful of Cook Circuit judges that all dozen or so of these bar associations and legal groups are saying don't retain. You've got to be pretty incompetent to pull that off.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 02:00 PM) I remember when Schu was moved out for Kenny, there was a transition period where Schuler still took the fall for some of the deals that took place. I would imagine this is a way of trying not to totally dump on Hahn and make things too much harder than they already are. As the old story goes... sit down, and write two letters.
  16. When y'all go to the booth, don't just dismiss the judge elections and retentions as nothing. These people have a real impact. The various state bar and attorney associations in Illinois, work together each cycle to publish a list of qualification and recommendation for each - to retain or not, to elect or not. It is not based on political stance or party, it is purely professional performance and/or qualifications. I have the sheet for this cycle. If you want it, PM me your email address. In any case, give it some thought.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 11:37 AM) Chicago White Sox ‏@whitesox Hahn: "We won the World Series with a $75 million payroll and right now we have enough to win...a nine-figure payroll is enough to win." Well, that's already a few million higher than last year, at least.
  18. Article in the Trib about Rienzo attracting scouts' attention in Arizona. Includes a video at the top. Some highlights... --Fastball hitting 95 in AFL --Has two fastballs, one is a cutter --Also has a "sharp slider and a changeup" --Plays athletically on the defensive side, good foot work --Pitching motion similar to Orel Hershiser
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 09:31 AM) White Sox Talk ‏@WhiteSoxTalkCSN Jerry Reinsdorf, in a statement on Williams' new role: "more macro issues, talent evaluation and long-term planning for the organization.” More strategy and top end scouting... less contracts, trades, making payroll work, and generally filling the roster.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 09:26 AM) I think he will be doing KW's old job this afternoon, the only difference being while KW had to take things to JR, RH will be taking them to KW. That sounds about right, though I do agree with others that they will use the opportunity of having the new guy internal, to transition things a little big gradually.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 09:23 AM) yeah, I think this move is primarily to keep Kenny from literally killing himself. The job stress is always apparent. And the only way to do that is have him back off major chunks of the job. Changing his title isn't going to accomplish that.
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 09:17 AM) JR just said KW will maintain oversight and final approval on major baseball deals. I think the change is more gas in Rick's tank, and Hahn now doing the legwork. leg work, and the basic plan, and most of the ideas for the team. That is a pretty big shift. Of course, as others have pointed out, that was probably already happening in 2012, and will transition further in 2013. Obviously it won't be a an on/off switch. But I have no doubt that by the end of 2013, Hahn will be doing 80% of what KW was doing as of, say, this time last year.
  23. QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 09:10 AM) I dont think we need dancers. And that may HURT the sox attracting families to the park. I don't think he was being serious. Or if he was, then yeah, that's a horrible idea. You gain a few teenagers and 20-somethings, and lose everyone else.
  24. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 09:03 AM) It will be interesting to see what they say at the press conference. I don't know where people are getting KW is just being phased out. If the White sox told him to leave they have to pay him for a year anyway. I would imagine most of the decisions are a group effort, so that will probably not change, just Hahn chasing down the deals not KW. Big things will always be done in committee, sure. But little to medium things, Rick will own, and big things, he will own the idea-generation and getting things served up, for discussion in said committee. That is the job of a GM.
