Regardless of what you think of Obama... no President has come into office facing an economic situation as dire as Obama did, since the Great Depression at least. And few enter office with two major wars ongoing. He had both. I don't think there has been a President since FDR that inherited a mess on anything like the same scale as Obama did. So I don't begrudge ObamaCo pointing to that regularly. The big questions of course are about what he's done about it, and/or not done.

QUOTE (MnSoxFan @ Oct 15, 2012 -> 12:34 PM) Hmmmm, Thompson batter last. Hope that is not an indication of what the mgr thinks about his bat. I wouldn't read too much into that. It seems like he's been moving guys around. -
Sox Prospects/Players in the winter leagues (I bolded some names worth noting)... VENEZUELA RHP Wilce Nieves, Caribes de Anzoategui RHP Scott Carroll, Leones del Caracas C Miguel Gonzalez, Tiburones de La Guaira OF Jose Martinez, Tiburones de La Guaira INF Jose Lopez, Cardenales de Lara RHP Leopoldo Sanchez, Cardenales de Lara RHP Justin Cassel, Cardenales de Lara (last pitched in 2011 in Sox system, didn't pitch in 2012) DOMINICAN RHP Brandon Kloess, Estrellas de Oriente C Tyler Flowers, Leones de Escogido MEXICO *No one, as far as I can tell PUERTO RICO *No rosters announced yet, season starts in early November I didn't look at Australia, but the Sox don't usually send anyone down there. Seems like overall, the number of players is lower than in previous seasons. Maybe when the PR teams announce rosters, that will change.
-
The Venezuelan League opened on 10/11, Mexican Pacific League started on 10/13, and the Dominican League opened on 10/14. The Puerto Rican League starts later, on 11/8. The Australian League starts on 11/1. Watch here for a listing of Sox players on rosters in those leagues, I'll post something a little later today.

Game from the 13th... Surprise 10, Salt River 2 Wilkins: 2-4, 2B, R, K, SB Tr Thompson: 0-3, 2 K S Sanchez: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K Ta Thompson: 1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K Among those who have played 3 games or more for Salt River, Andy Wilkins is leading the team in AVG (.462), SLG (.846) and OPS (1.308). 3 games is a very small sample of course, but, nice to see him starting off well. Salt River plays today (Monday) at 1:35pm Central time. Should see Sanchez in the lineup, possibly see Santos Rodriguez pitching. -

Salt River 6, Scottsdale 5 C Sanchez: 3-4, RBI, R, BB, K, 2 SB Wilkins: 3-5, 2B, 2 RBI, R, K White Sox hitters in Arizona apparently came to play. The three of them, despite playing only 2 games each, have knocked in 6 of the team's 22 runs, and have 9 of their 32 hits, helping Salt River stay undefeated so far. Sanchez has been playing 2B so far, for what its worth. And Trayce Thompson has 4 walks in 2 games, against just 1 K (9 PA). -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 11, 2012 -> 02:42 PM) He wasn't the same after his rib injury. He definitely had issues late in the season with the back/ribs, you could see it as he played. Seemed like he finally got a little better near the end, before sitting again. But overall, his defense in CF seemed pretty decent to me.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 11, 2012 -> 02:26 PM) DeAza played good defense down the stretch? Okay. Where does the article say anything about his play down the stretch? It said he played good defense, and overall, that was true.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 11, 2012 -> 11:23 AM) Who wants to bet Biden brings up this figure without telling the whole story at the debate? http://www.cnbc.com/id/49372827 I would have loved it if the US Dept of Labor just outright called out the state that was missing its numbers. Hang 'em out to dry.

Ryan v Biden tonight. Anyone going to watch? I plan to record it and watch it in bits and pieces when I can.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 10, 2012 -> 02:40 PM) I think I get it now. From his original post: I don't have the raw, unadjusted data to compare to, but it does specifically say that initial estimates for government jobs were negative for those two months. OK, now that I saw this: The number makes much more sense. I agree. If they were negative before, the net change was in fact more than 63k. SS2K5 was right - I didn't see that phrase before. That's what I had been looking for, what it had been previously. I must have missed it earlier.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Oct 11, 2012 -> 08:20 AM) Brings up some interesting questions. Would the Sox try to sign Sale to a multi-year deal now? If so, what type of deal would/should he get? I'm okay with buying out Youkilis and Peavy (although re-sogning Peavy to an affordable multi-year deal would be nice). I'd like to see AJ back on a two year deal, but not for more than $7M per. Regardless of what happens this offseason, I'm thinking that the 2013 offseason could see a lot more changes. Depending on what happens during the 2013 season, we could certainly see more of a rebuilding year in 2014. This will be a really interesting offseason. As I mentioned before, I think there are three possible paths, depending on the magic number KW/Hahn get from the ownership. And I could honestly see it going any of those three ways. As for Sale, I think signing him to a long term deal right now is a very bad idea. The guy had a massive workload increase this season, and I am always nervous about his arm. I'd say you wait another year or two, and see what you have. -
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Oct 11, 2012 -> 07:01 AM) More than one baseball player has "left money on the table" in the past. Konerko and Buehrle have for the Sox alone. And I'm sure plenty of baseball players would leave $1 million, especially if you're talking about $15M vs. $14M if they felt they'd have a better chance at success with the team paying less. No question players do it occasionally, though usually it is for a relatively small amount of difference (percentage-wise). Players rarely (if ever) choose a deal a LOT lower than others known or on the table. Another example of this though, is that players sometimes get a hometown offer they like, and just take it straight away, without even exploring other options. They know they might be leaving money on the table, but it isn't a known thing, and it isn't worth it to them.

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 10, 2012 -> 01:27 PM) To who, his brother? The biggest thing with Peavy is if the insane workload this year will have a negative impact on his arm next year. I was thinking that too, there is real risk there that he falls back a bit next year strength-wise. But since he's now stretched out for a full season, I suspect that won't be a big setback for him, if at all. I'd be more concerned with overall injury risk from his history. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 10, 2012 -> 09:00 PM) You cannot honestly tell me that that you think there were at least 60 better starting pitchers than Jake Peavy this year. Seriously. Peavy in 2012 was a #3 starter? Where did that come from?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 26, 2012 -> 02:16 PM) With the BA league-specific Top 20 lists starting, and the Appy league already published (see the seperate thread for that, Hawkins is #2), here are the dates that BA will be releasing the other leagues where the Sox have affiliates... Pioneer League Sept. 27 South Atlantic League Oct. 3 Carolina League Oct. 5 Southern League Oct. 10 International League Oct. 12 No Sox from the Southern League. Sanchez and Thompson were in the Carolina league list. I doubt the Sox will have any in the Intl League either, so this is probably it. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 10, 2012 -> 01:45 PM) Its not revised data. It is raw data, that has been revised. Right. That now shows 63k added. What did it say BEFORE the revisions? If it said zero, then you'd be right that of the 86k REVISED ADDITIONS, 63k were government jobs. If it showed, say, 60k before, then only 3k of the 86k bump was government. You are confusing your numbers here. The only way you are right, is if that number was zero before the revisions.

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Oct 10, 2012 -> 01:22 PM) I've heard this a few times now, wasn't Danks projected to come back in September at one point?? My memories foggy did something happen during his rehab? It seems the likely track is to have him ready for ST. But that doesn't mean he'll be back to his normal self by then - just that he can start pitching.

QUOTE (Big Mak @ Oct 9, 2012 -> 07:30 PM) I don’t think we need a total rebuild, but we need more depth in the minors and better balance in the lineup. I’m doing this all under the assumption that the Whitesox will not spend more 100 million in budget next year. The key to my strategy is not give up any young talent in trades and to try to patch the holes on the cheap via free agency. We Keep the following already under contract Rios 12.5m Kong 13.5 million Missile 7m Danks 14.5 Crain I trade for a prospect and 4.5 million of salary relief Thornton I trade for a prospect and I throw in 1.5 million for the other team to take 4 million off the books Dunn I trade for spects again I throw in 6 million for the other team, So I can at least get a decent prospect out of the deal, So I’ve cleared another 9 million. CONTRACT OPTIONS AND BUY-OUTS I pick up floyds 9.5 million Peavey I buy out for 4 m I can’t afford 22m or his contract demands Youk goes as well, to expensive with his age health and salary demands Myers goes as well FREE AGENTS I sign Dewise at 1m he’s the perfect 4th outfielder on this team I dump the rest of the free agents none of them are worth the dough ARB ELIGIBLE Phil Humber – I release him he’s useless on this team with Axlerod on the roster, who can perform the same job cheaper Gordon Beckham – offer arb Alejandro De Aza – offer arb PRE-ARB: Chris Sale Brent Morel Tyler Flowers Nate Jones Addison Reed Hector Santiago Dylan Axlerod Jordan Danks Hector Gimenez Jhan Marinez Brian Omogrosso Jose Quintana Leyson Septimo Donnie Veal AT this point I got 73 million on the books with the 2 arb raises and such I traded Dunn so I need a new DH I move Viciedo to DH Leaving Left field open I then sign Angel Pagan to 8 million contract for 3 years I play him in left and lead off adding defense and more OBP to the lineup That takes me to 81 million I then sign BJ Upton for 12 million at 4 years and put him at 3rd he has played there in 2006 and ranks better there then at second in fielding metrics That takes me to 93 million I then strength up the rotation on the cheap I sign Carlos Villanueva for a 2 year deal at 4 million a year for the back end of the rotation 97 million I sign Jonathan Sanchez for a million bucks off the scrap heap, for Coop to try to fix Leaves me with 98 I then sign a veteran catcher, for a million bucks to caddy with Flowers Leaving me at 99 million Lineup 1 LF Pagan 2 3b Upton 3 RF Rios 4 1b Kong 5 dh Viciedo 6 ss missile 7 c flowers/veteran 8 2b beckham 9 cf De Aza Rotation 1 Sale 2 Quintana 3 Floyd 4 Villanueva 5 Sanchez/Santiago I am under the assumption Danks starts year on DL and is not fully recovered, till mid year 5th spot is a battle between Jonathan Sanchez and Santiago in spring training, loser goes to the bullpen. Bullpen Closer A Reed N Jones D Veal B Omogrosso J Marinez Simon Castro 5th spot loser Long man Axelrod Welcome aboard - that is quite a first post! Calling those working in software project Management
NorthSideSox72 replied to Marky Mark's topic in SLaM
In my experience, most people with a job title of or like "scrum master" are actually more project administrators - or meeting facilitators - than project managers. It is a thankless job and gives you less visibility to higher ups, and less upward mobility. That is, again, just in my experience. I'd go for the PM job if I were you. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 5, 2012 -> 03:31 PM) I found it most entertaining that apparently the government didn't know about the 63,000 people it hired for two months or so. That and the whole hiring right before the elections to make the numbers look good, thing. QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 5, 2012 -> 03:37 PM) Where are you getting "pretty much all?" It looks like a small (relative to the idea of "most") portion based on those quotes to me QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 5, 2012 -> 11:04 PM) July and August were revised 86000 higher. Government jobs were revised to 63000 higher. Re-read the original statement. I think you are still misunderstanding the math here. The govt number was revised UP TO 63000. So unless it was REVISED UP FROM Zero, which is not what the article says. So no, unless the previous number was zero, you are not correct.
