  1. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 14, 2011 -> 04:56 PM) Have you checked out Gordon's numbers lately? He should bat 8th or 9th, no higher. Putting a s***ty hitter up in the order in the hopes that makes him better is not exceptionally smart. Beckham's swing is a complete mess and the guy cant catch up to a fastball. Putting a struggling batter 2nd "in the hopes it makes him better" can be smart, or stupid, depending on the situation. My personal view is, with his specific problems, it would benefit him.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 14, 2011 -> 04:53 PM) Actually they are fully willing to attack Medicare. They have a plan in place to effectively end it and leave seniors responsible for a much larger share of their health care dollars in the private market within a decade. Well first, only some of "they" are willing to do that. Second, that's not actually fixing a problem, that's replacing one with another. But even that is still better than doing nothing with it, at this point. I'd like someone other than Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich to be willing to cut the monster military money muncher. I'd like someone to use some of the vast financial brain power we have in this country to find a way to unwind us from social security. I'd like someone to tell me whey the richest 1% of the country are paying less taxes then ever, in the midst of the deepest economic downturn since the depression (and then raise their taxes - yeah I said it). Then, if you have the balls to do that, and the brains, maybe you are smart enough to realize that discretionary cuts can be done smartly, instead of lumping towel robots and alternative energy into the same bucket.
  3. LOL, I love how they equate laundry-folding robots with solar power. The government does spend way, way, way too much money. But that nice little video doesn't want you to know that the fun little discretionary bits are only a tiny portion of the problem, and that most GOP'ers even are unwilling to attack the monstrosities that are social security, medicare, historically low tax rates for businesses and the rich, and the military. Those together are 90% of the problem.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 14, 2011 -> 04:44 PM) If the guy in the 2 hole is supposed to be the guy who gets extra fastballs...putting Beckham there is a bad idea, because Beckham is failing against fastballs right now. He's behind the heat because he's loading too much, and I think he does that less when he's focusing on contact. I doubt everyone will agree, but that's my opinoin on him right now.
  5. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 14, 2011 -> 04:43 PM) Ugh, why bat Beckham 2nd? He's not much better than Juan Pierre. First, he's definitely better even now. Second, they area going in opposite directions career-wise, IMO. Pierre has seen his peak and is falling. Beckham, my read, is that he will get a lot better. And putting him in a place where the pressure is more about contact and less about power would benefit him by quieting his swing a bit.
  6. Lexi, 6 Beckham, 4 TCQ, 9 PK, 3 Dunn, 0 Viciedo, 7 Rios, 8 AJP, 2 Morel, 5 That would be my preference for a starting lineup at this point. I think Beckham might benefit from hitting 2nd. Pierre DFA, Lilli stays on the bench with Vizquel, Castro and Teahen.
  7. Huge series. Huge. Winning or sweeping would be a big step for the team. Losing 2 of 3 is bad but not the end of the world. Getting swept would be awful for this team.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 14, 2011 -> 09:18 AM) Any chance they just released them? That's exactly what happened, per my ticket rep, and most are gone now.
  9. Winning 2 of 3 in Minny would be huge for this team, beyond just beating an ALC team. The mental impact could be huge. With this little run of good baseball the Sox are on, if they can add a series victory over their nemesis (and on the road, and when they are getting hot) to the resume, I think that's a big boost for their confidence.
  10. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 10, 2011 -> 10:37 AM) We were like two sections past first base, about 10 rows up. The wind was brutal, kept blowing right down my back. We were front row UD, above the Sox dugout. Seemed like the upper deck behind us blocked the wind. Weird how it swirls around in that stadium though, you never know where it will be windy.
  11. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jun 10, 2011 -> 10:26 AM) FWIW, cats are far more independent and self-reliant when left on their own compared to dogs. So is an X-Box.
  12. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 10, 2011 -> 10:01 AM) I honestly feel bad for serious Cubs fans. They cheer for a team that legitimately doesnt give a s*** about them. Their stadium will be full and continue to crumble, and nothing can be done about it. Except they aren't filling the stadium this year like in previous years. Their attendance is trending down, and will continue to do so. I honestly think we may see here an opening, for the Sox to pull a lot closer to being as relevant to Chicago baseball fans as the Cubs are (though they won't be able to have the same national following, probably). But to do that, the Sox need to be competitive and reach the post-season semi-regularly over the next few years, and re-development around the park needs to continue. And the Cubs need to continue to be bad on the field, and have their stadium continue to crumble. This is a long process of course, because the die-hard fans don't change allegiances. What you are targeting are the casual fans, non-team-specific fans, and most importantly, the kids who haven't chosen a team yet. People who dismiss this possibility have short memories. Over the 110 years of Cubs and Sox baseball, the Sox have had long periods of being the dominant team. They outdrew the cubs as recently as 18 years ago, and were close to them a couple years between. Cubs dominating the Sox in Chicago is not a permanent state, and its not something that's always been true.
  13. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 10, 2011 -> 09:33 AM) Just in time for our visit. Twins weren't going to stay the worst team in baseball for the full season. Still not likely to be competitive in the Central though.
  14. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 9, 2011 -> 11:07 PM) Just wanted to make sure it was all consolidated into one thread. Current NDFA's in the system I am aware of... Dan Remenowsky Brandon Kloess Ryan Kussmaul All relievers. Who else is there, if anyone knows offhand?
  15. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 10, 2011 -> 01:01 AM) I was there and it was freezing. I'll take credit for pulling Dunn out of his slump, though. I will steal 50% of that, thank you very much! Wasn't too cold where we sat, must have had the wind blocked.
  16. Well, I've been to two games, and I'm 2-0. Let's hope my game threads get a nice streak going. mi mi mi mi... GO YOU WHITE SOX!!!
  17. For the record, my point of the post had nothing to do with dogs vs cats.
  18. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 9, 2011 -> 02:47 PM) You just like his name That was the original reason. Then I saw he was drafted in Buehrle's round. Then I read about him a bit, and he actually looks intriguing. Huge improvement YoY. Read a story about him going to some sort of national camp as a high school 9th grader and already throwing 84 at that point.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2011 -> 02:43 PM) I'll take that! Seriously, that's win-win. $5 or two Dunn HR's.
  20. Don't know why, but I have a good feeling about Keegan Linza. I might take him as a new AAP, since a bunch of my guys (Dubler, Lucy, G Johnson) are non-prospects now, and Shirek is marginal at best.
  21. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 9, 2011 -> 01:40 PM) That could play a part. NJ/NY are possible, but keep in mind the taxes there will be just about as bad as IL all-told. Plus cost of living increases to those places would be dramatic, which means losing talent (again), and/or major increases in salaries that take away some of the savings. Texas may actually be the most realistic - doesn't have the costs of NY/NJ, but there is some degree of finance and tech knowledge down there. I still say the chances of them moving anything of note are miniscule, and that IL will throw some money at them just to make sure.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2011 -> 01:21 PM) That's just it. If you took most of the CME out of Chicago, there wouldn't be nearly the reason for many firms to be here. There is a reason these industries are clustered around Chicago and NY primarily, and now San Fran and Atlanta secondarily. I think the ICE actually proves better than anyone that if you have work, people will come to you. That is a financial powerhouse HQ'd in the deep south. If you can do that, you can do it anywhere. Works both ways. CME needs the firms as much as they need CME. And they aren't going to up and move en masse. Starting an entirely new operation is a different deal, and that they MIGHT do as a test - start some new, smaller venue for a specific type of trading somewhere else, and see how it works out. But its not an extensible model, the talent won't be available to go very far with it. CME's main business and most of their people will still be here, no doubt.
  23. QUOTE (kapzk @ Jun 9, 2011 -> 11:37 AM) Ok so 19 more games left in June what are some realistic goals of the teams performance in the upcoming days till the end of the month. I hope for a 13-6 record .... but i guess realistically we should shoot for a .500 overall team record once June wraps up. Same goals as a month ago, IMO... Over .500 and 2nd place by the ASB. That's what I'd be shooting for, and I'm hoping for, and they've made good progress in that direction so far.
  24. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 9, 2011 -> 01:16 PM) Like bunting with guys who can't bunt? Ozzie's good at managing a clubhouse, but he really doesn't give his players the best chance to succeed with some of his on-field decisions. Ozzie should be a bench coach. He's the ideal guy for that job, IMO. Put him with a patient and skilled game manager, and they could make a great duo.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2011 -> 01:16 PM) Here is a better breakdown of what they are looking at. At the end of the day I am sure that Illinois won't be stupid and will give them a nice break so that they don't move. But don't get the idea that this doesn't happen. http://www.suntimes.com/business/5854347-4...ve-chicago.html LOL, yeah, because the electronic trading tech gurus are really going to want to move to Indy when there are lots of jobs for them in Chicago. Not gonna happen, unless you are suggesting the whole derivatives world is going to up and move out, which is also a non-starter. Though I agree that the state will probably throw some money at them just to make sure.
